In order for the church to arise, she has to be willing to fulfill the High Priestly prayer of Jesus - namely our unity. Too many politics and theological issues are preventing this. I grew up Presbyterian (PCA), and so appreciate the hymns of old, ancient tradition and deep reverence and fear of the Lord. But I also embrace the gifts of the Holy Spirit - active today in each believer. I love Psalms, Hymns AND Spiritual Songs (yes, songs with only a few lines sung several times) - the diversity of music and worship styles is important. Hymns are deeply theological and rich in lyrical depth. They stimulate our minds and draw us into our rich heritage as saints. But Spiritual Songs, lead us past what our minds are capable of, and allow us to disconnect from the limitations of thought and emotion and allow us direct connection with the Holy Spirit. They are meant to give us space to be WITH Him, not just sing about Him, or even to Him - but to connect directly and enjoy it. After all, that is the chief end of man according to the Westminster Confession, "To glorify God, and ENJOY Him forever." My Presbyterian and denominational friends need more joy. I know, I've been there. And my Pentecostal friends need more fear of the Lord, and more grounding in good theology and study of the written word. We all have strengths and weaknesses, but if we bury our heads in the sand towards one another, how can we lift eachother up??
