I had a guy on me pull an Americana in class a few weeks back and this video flashed through my head and while I didn't get a counter tap it did give me leverage to stop his lock and break his sub attempt. Nice Prof. Owen!!

tested this out myself in class and it works great for me, thanks. I got the tap without having to roll him over, the kid was shocked.

I used it last night, it works! Thank you Professor Owens.

Love it. Almost had my elbow break tonight when I got caught in an Americana from side. Shoulda tapped and then crack. Think it was just a little bit of chiropractic but have ice on it now. Goes to show never underestimate anyone. I'm a 2s blue belt with 4 years experience and a white belt caught me. Fucker. But respect. I've learnt my lesson!

awsome, I didn't know what to do when stuck on this possition, i would always try to roll or keep my back off the ground to relieve pressure. Now I have a counter for it. THANKS!

yeah, like ppl said it shouldn't happen in guard say they go for your left arm, scoot your hips out to the right, whilst pushing their left shoulder with your right hand - you should then be in a good position to take the back

@hooah91 It's not on youtube but Rubens Charles actually shows an Americana from the guard in his newer DVD.

Another excellent taught techique by Kieth but I must add that the timing of this counter is critical as being a second too late and you will really wished you had just tapped.

@123gwf thats why he captured his hand between his legs. And if you roll the guy over he's not gonna realize quick enough to counter it. anyway.

Ok so half the time ik when im ab to be americana'd and i position my arms to instantly react and americana them and it rather breaks the grip or releases pressure on ur shoulder. It's risky but it works they don't expect it and usually let go quickly.

At first I was thinking that I didnt like this since when I grab my arm the top guys always goes for the near side armbar but on second thought I realized that I can bait them into going for the arm and escape that way way since I know its coming.

I know it's not very likely, anybody good would just get out of their guard first, but it was just hypothetical. And you completely missed my "what about mount" part too. Also, there are people with unhuman strength, think Lesnar and Lashley, and for his size probably Mike Brown.

Again, it was hypothetical. I bet you could train for however long you want, and there are still people who would tap you in your guard. And somebody with overwhelming power or weight could probably put an americana on most people from within their guard.

getting submitted by keylock/americana while having somebody in your gaurd should never happen, they just can't get the proper leverage without passing your legs

First of all, thanks for being inconsiderate considering it was a theoretical question. Second, ever consider that maybe you are rolling with someone who is far beyond you? Perhaps a Gracie skill level. I bet any of them could put a kimura or americana on you from inside your guard, without much effort at all.
