I read recently that this was done because the actor who played Keith had some issues with Mark, so the creator chose to kill him off. That's right Mark literally killed Keith, not Dan. At the same time Keith being killed by his brother mirrors how Lucas and Nathan's relationship as brothers could've been had they not made up their differences.

What Dan said to Keith is similar to what Tom said to Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. Tom may have not had a drop of Sicilian Blood but he was just as much a Son to Don Corleone as Sonny was. Kind of like Ray Krebbs on Dallas who like Gary had a love of the land but unlike Gary he worked it and made Southfork the successful Enterprise with it's Cattle and Horses.
