Someone get this man a sand blaster! And a pair of steel toe boots.. Much love from USA

Very soon when I sell my stage lights & flight cases which take up too far much room in the outer part of my workshop, I am thinking about a sandblasting cabinet and a brazing hearth - maybe not the boots though because for the amount of bits of metal I drop on my toes annually, the cost would not be worth it:-) Merry Christmas {:-)))

@@keithappleton I've got a pair of patent leather dress shoes with steel toecaps. Remarkably inexpensive. Can't have been much over a tenner IIRC!

Oh, that last shot was so pretty! I don't know how long you were working on the finish of the boiler proper, but it was certainly worth it.

Coming from a background in working with wood and things like chisels, I never use my feet to stop things hitting the floor. I cheat though, I have a sort of carpet on the floor of the workshop so the landing is softer. Comfortable underfoot as well.

I find it interesting that you do use scales as scrapers. I have had two Starrett 12 inch scales on the wall for over 30 years that have been used only for that purpose. It is amazing how well they have worked over the years.

All good stuff, Keith. I use an acetic acid bath or electrolysis to de-rust ferrous parts. Electrolysis is gentler as it supposedly cannot remove any material.

Hey Keith, something I found useful removing rust from chrome parts on my motorcycle is to use a window cleaner and a ball of aluminum foil. Makes very short work of even deep rust spots, and is easier to grip than an sheet of sandpaper.
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
That's interesting - will try it .... thanks {:-)))

Consider try some 3M finishing wheel. Really cuts down sanding on metal parts.

Another great video. Lidl sell safety boots at a cheap price and they're pretty comfortable. Not as heavy duty as the timberlands I use in work but perfectly fine for home garage and workshop use. Well I've not bruised my toes yet but have a gearbox to come out of my series 3 next week so we shall see!

Hi Keith. Always enjoy your video's as a Patreon and have used much of your knowledge in my attempts to do some basic model engineering. I see you have used nitromores paint stripper. The new stuff isn't as good as the old stuff as the good ingredients were removed due health and safety issues! Have you tried Stripaway paint remover? Its like nitromores used to be, the paint bubbles up as you apply it. Fantastic. I hope you found this info useful. Regards Martin.

The no arms story made me laugh. I had a friend in grade school that had to use his feet to do everything he would put his homework on the ground and use his toes to hold the pencil.

Have you ever tried Evapo-Rust? I watch a few machinists & restoration types that swear by it. Parts look really good after a soaking.

Can you replace the asbestos with fibreglass sheet?

Yes, but there is a product available which is a direct replacement for Asbestos, it is made from China Clay apparently.

is there a worry about the JB weld with the heat of firing the boiler?
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
it should be OK ....
@garyarnold82887 жыл бұрын
My brother, a Union Pipe Fitter, has told me stories about repairing Comercial Boilers with JB Weld. It works well with cast iron and held up for many years.
@cburgess52947 жыл бұрын
JB weld can be used to repair automotive engine blocks in certain applications. It will be fine with the heat from the boiler. It is good stuff.
@trainsbangsandautomobiles8247 жыл бұрын
I use JB weld on engine parts alot, which get to above 220* F. It holds up very well
@ThePipescs7 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity I checked the JB Weld Site. It will endure 500 degrees constant temp with up to ten minutes at 600 degrees. We use it in gluing the brake lining material to the brake shoes for model steam locomotives and cars.

There is a youtube channel by a girl with no arms. I think the girl is named Tisha or Trisha or something like that. She shares life with no arms. Driving to mcdonalds and doing house chores etc. You might ask her if she would be interested to build a steam enginge . I was wondering why you remove rust with sandpaper rather than using a wire brush or wire wheel?
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
I remove rust with sandpaper because I don't like using wire wheels - don't know why, I just don't like using them .....

I must say that I find your use of a rule to scrape paint from a painted part very disconcerting. A rule is a precise measuring instrument and should only be used as such in my opinion. It would be much better if you used a kitchen knife or possibly an old garden implement such as a spade. By the way , I can pick my nose with my big toe but the smell whilst doing so is bloody awful.

Roger Croll Amazing...
@Phantomthecat7 жыл бұрын
Roger Croll - a micrometer is a precise measuring instrument, a steel rule is an approximation IMO and scraping paint with it will have zero impact on its ability to measure to the nearest mm which is all they are good for.
