Watching this series reminds me of my time as a young man working in a motorcycle shop. Being also a motocross racer I learned how to modify cylinders and pistons of 2 stroke engines. The shop had a machine used to bore new surfaces onto the steel cylinders sleeves pressed into the aluminum castings. The boring machine would start at the top of the cylinder and move down while it cutting new a new surface. I would use a drill with honing stones to put a nice crosshatch as the final finish. I was a perfectionist about it, using a micrometer to measure the inside bore to factory specifications. I have an appreciation for guys who work as machinists like you do, and I thank you for bringing back my youthful memories.

Superb demo of setting work for second operation in 4 jaw and metrology practice. I learned sooo much, thanks. It's also really nice to see a true pro doing some things the same that I've learned in just a few years of hobby work. Like not trusting the vernier calipers, but DO use them for backup & keep switching. I especially like the digital calipers to read the coarse value & then the mic for the fine reading since I'm quite likely to make errors on reading the vernier style readout +/- 0.5mm

Thank you Keith for another rich-with-info video. The name I regularly use for your "Guessto-meters" is "Very-near calipers" :) it reminds me that they can only get you near but not all the way...

Oh, I know what you were doing. You were demonstrating how when you have your parting tool hanging out so much to part thick stock, it can skew and hollow out the face. You referenced both the OD and the trued face which I would have done too. I was suggesting that indicating the bore to further demonstrate your point would have just been icing on the cake. Thanks for the videos!

An old shop I worked in had a 4-jaw centering chuck.Wasn't any more practical than a 3-jaw.It was worn, and if you had any runout, you still had to shim a jaw or two.A few of our Clausings had 6-jaw centering chucks. Those were sweet!

Yes we have a self centering (concentric chuck) in our shop, it only really gets used for turning square sections, which it is very good for, although you have to make sure the part is pretty much square before you chuck it, we also have a bigger independant 4 jaw, a bit like Keiths, that gets far more use.

Dave, the one Keith has looks similar to the 670 indicator hole attachment series in the current Starrett pdf catalog online at Starrett's web site.

Keith, If you measure the two contact points distance apart and are then able to determine if the fulcrum or pivot's center is equal to 1/2 that distance, then it is a true reading attachment.

Some parts houses that turn rotors and drums have dampening belts to go around the rotor and drum and really reduces tool chatter.

I work in a wheel and tire shop, and we too use vinyl tape on our jaws to protect wheel faces from being scratched by the jaw teeth

I keep it, time and material, at the beginning I can guess a high, not to exceed, cost and if it falls short of that price, I charge just what it took to complete the job, customer saves, if it took a bit more, or I added in some extras, I cover the cost and call it paying forward on some advertising.

I like to take parallels and put them in between the jaw surface and the work piece to get it square.

hello keith. first of all i enjoy watching your videos very much, thanks for sharing your craftsmanship. ive been watching quite alot of your work and i have to say your perfectionism is getting intimidating after a while. could you do me a favor and make a video on some of your mishabs and fails (if there are any) so i can verify that you are human and not a machine. i dont mean to compete, it would just build my confidence to trail and error my way to perfectionism. thanx !! greet lex

Talking about what some machinists refer to as a guessometer(linear caliper) most of the KZbin videos showing Vietnamese and Indian or pakastani machinists use a slide linear caliper that only has markings on the metal no dial no digital indicator. Most center their work using a bent wire attached to a weight or magnet and eyeball the trueness of their runout. They rarely bring out a dial caliper, RARELY, but they machine stuff all the time like that.

You do want your indicator, pretty close to being straight in line with center axis and as close to 90 of the lathe center line, because the indicator movements work easier or more freely! It is not the end of the world if it’s not perfect! Also it can be held anywhere around the circumference. You may find yourself some day, indicating inside a bore, looking at a mirror to read the dial and chances are it won’t be perfectly aligned. ;{)---

Part off blade can flex and move a few thousandths I would assume depending on lathe Chuck, spindle and cross slide/tool post and tool mount rigidity related issues and what your parting off and how sharp and deep your cutting to part off something I would think. It’s not like a rigid cutting tool. But, I’m NOT a machinist but a wannabe with no lathe, mill or surface grinder. Just a hacksaw, grinder, a file, a pair of eyes and common sense. Have you ever encounter parts where at the maximum distance from the Chuck jaws was less run out that at the jaws.

Hi Keath, another newbie question. Internet machinists are always preaching that you have to put your indicator on center when measuring concentricity. I don't see you do that. I trust you are right because youre projects are always on the money. Elaborate please kind regards, Teun

Couldn't you have stuck an indicator in the bore? Three indicators vs the parted face would have been great.

I don't know if you can answer this question but at 13 min mark I paused the video and was looking at the lathe and could name the cross feed dial and the parts associated with the feed but at the bottom edge of the screen there is a feed opposite to where you stand and it has two vertical pegs to adjust the dial but I don't know what it would be used for especially since it's on the opposite side of the lathe, is it for mounting your cutter to and maybe doing a rotational cut.

Keith Fenner A very handy attachment to have allowing precise replication at very little time cost allowing you to keep job costs down on labor plus it would help reduce errors. I am enjoying going through all your videos I have found them both educational and exciting, you seem to be lucky in a sense that the variety keeps you both on your toes plus gives a challenge to each project.
