Not sure if I clicked the right place to reply. Great looking table and I appreciate the mistakes and how to over come them I have learned far more from my mistakes then when everything goes correctly not that that happens to me to often. Can you tell me is that a little cabinet scraper laying on the bench in one of the sanding sections of the video and can you let me know so you like it and if so where do I get one? Thank you.

This table arrived well packaged and on time. kzbin.infoUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

Great video Keith. Really glad you choose to stay on this platform. I think it’s important that talented people like you share the complexity and challenges of good woodwork. It’s inspiring to those interested in learning and a valuable lesson to those who wonder why custom work seems expensive. The quality of your work is why it’s worth it.

Totally agree. There is a bigger problem to me, that aesthetically this table doesn’t quite work. The “legs” are too wide. The radius where the base meets the legs is too big. The easiest way to balance this design wound be to put a large radius on the bottom corner of each leg. The table top is too small for the base. An overhang of a couple of inches would look better.

Sometimes when a product is looked at, we may think, “No big whoop”. Until you see the amount of finesse that goes into a product like your table. Incredible. So, if you were asked to make another, do you use this existing piece to use as a giant template and write down everything you can think of, so the next one goes a bit smoother? One observation noticed (and helped me to feel, “It’s okay”,) is that (my son and I being newbies), seems like my Laguna table saw gets loaded up with every measuring device, clamp, chisel, sanding block, Woodpecker anything and everything, and anything else that we can jam onto the surface… almost within 5 minutes. Like maniacs.
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Жыл бұрын
Hey Rick. I rarely make the same piece twice because that doesn't make good content 😜. And I still have the template for the curved legs and all the dimensions, so it's pretty cut and dry if I had to make another one. And yes, every horizontal surface seems to attract everything and anything to it almost immediately 😂

You should make yourself a sanding glove. Cut strips of velcro from a disc sander interface pad and CA glue them to the fingers of an old cotton glove. It makes doing the fiddly sanding like those half laps a lot less stressful on your hands.

Seems like an easier fix on the leg width problem would have been to just cut the legs back another 1/8” each and then round over again. That would have gained a 1/2” and since you rounded over the table top to match the legs anyway. Just a thought, I’m probably missing something

FYI, Osmo Raw is made specifically for light wood. It contains a little bit of white pigment to counter against the yellowing Also, I'm wondering why you had to modify the table top. Couldn't you just have taken some material off of the outside of the legs to bring them in, then redo the round-over? You ultimately did that anyways, so why was it necessary to do both?
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Жыл бұрын
Dimension still would not have worked even by modifying the legs. The top had to be made bigger. Trust me, I spent hours on the computer and on paper, and mathematically to try and make it work without having to enlarge the top.

Agreed. I used both Clear and Raw on recent projects and the difference is very noticeable. I love the look of Raw on white oak. Osmo Raw is like Rubio Natural w/o the extra step of adding the hardener. Osmo is now my preferred finish. Cheers!

Beautiful table, my only concern is having the base so large that if the floor that it is sitting on is not perfectly flat you will get a wobble. Wow love this table! A very tiny change I would have made here, this is a personal taste thing but I always like when two "parallel" curves are following each other, I like to make the curves marry more aesthetically for me by adding the offset between the curves to the outer radius. So on the table top, when rounding over the corners, you'd actually take the radius of the table leg and instead of directly templating that onto the radius of the table top's rounding, adding the amount inset the legs are going to be to the radius of the tabletop corner's curve. Idk if that makes sense, kinda hard to describe in words haha. But regardless a beautiful table, and you will probably never even be looking at it from underneath to even notice lol

Just a question, not being critical but why did you go through the hassle of 30 degree dados on the table saw when you could've used the trenching feature on your Kapex?

Not a fan of the trenching feature and making 20 cuts. And I don’t trust it.

What dado stack do you use? I get crazy tearout on white oak when using a dado stack in the method you did for the 30 degree half lap joints. Thanks! Love the piece!

Thanks very much! I’m not sure which one I was using here, but traditionally I use the Infinity Tools Dadonator 8 inch. Now, I mostly use the sawstop dado stack because it’s a little more compatible with the saw. They both work fantastic.

Keith: So is the lesson learned here: Don’t cut table top to final dimension until the base is complete? Could you have anticipated this issue before and accommodated it in the initial top dimensions? I realize this method might alter slightly the board spacing for the top, but you did that anyway. Would you consider an extra 3/8 of an inch for the outer boards too large to tolerate visually? In the beginning of the video you stated the table needed to be a specific 52x30 dimension. Didn’t this “adjusted” table top remove that requirement? Thanks for the good video.

When I was much younger a screw up would send me into a panic , I'd have to stop and walk away sometimes until the next day. Nowadays I just give myself a quick insult then go right into fix it mode.

How do you know the difference between your shop helpers? I've looked and I can't see the difference. I guess one option is just call the one you see by the name that comes to mind and you don't really know the difference. lol just curious as they are beautiful cats...

Beautiful coffee table. I would love to see that in walnut. Since you’re really not a fan of mortising, perhaps you’re next to investment could be a mortising drill press. Definitely on my list when I grow up and become a fine woodworker.
