If you were to ask me what my favorite dining table is that I’ve ever built, it would be this beautiful
round trestle table! Round tables like this have so much character, and the pedestal base adds
interest and intrigue to any space. The walnut that I used actually needed to dry for two years before
I was able to use it! The wait was well worth it...the color and grain of the wood added to the
fantastic trestle table design. Let me know what you think!

Love the (classic) video! How do you deal with squeeze out when using epoxy? I'm always nervous to use it for glue ups because it's so messy, even with the benefit of more open time
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
For epoxy squeeze out, I wipe the excess with acetone. Nowadays, I use TotalBoat THIXO which is a 2-part thickened epoxy which is much easier to control how much of a mess you make because it doesn't run all over the place. It comes in a tube, like caulk, and uses a mixing tip to combine the 2 parts as it comes out of the tube. I swear by that stuff. Gives you about 30-35 minutes of open time.

I monitored it closely for two years in my basement and there were no sawdust piles or any signs of bugs. It should be pretty evident once a tree is milled up, if there’s a bug problem.

Thanks for sharing the build with us. Perhaps you'll consider chamfering the edges of the tabletop and framing, as they tend to need it.

Um where the eff in CT did you find that?! I’m guessing Eastern CT since you clearly had to cross the long wharf

😂 yeah, northeastern CT. Believe it or not, it was the first and last walnut log the guy came across. And I actually had to make 2 trips to get it all.

Question: you out put in those C channels and I see other table builder do this also. But I have always wondered if the C channel is superior to putting in a sliding dovetail board. I get the C channel is easier but I don't think that easier is your style. Thanks in advance! It is a great looking table
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Жыл бұрын
The C-Channel is actually more work and more money to do, but also less noticeable than multiple sliding dovetail boards would be.

I always love how we always say "don't forget to check for square" haha. As a newer woodworker if it wasn't square at that point all I would know to do is curse haha. What are some mediation tricks if you come to that point and you're not square or are you just screwed?
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
In this case, I could cut a slightly larger groove and put in an angled wedge to get it back to square when I did the dry fit. However, I would have checked that my miter gauge was square to my blade after I made my first test cut before I cut all the joinery.

I appreciated you showing how you worked around the limited open time with wood glue. Do you have any experience with Titebond Extend and it's open time compared to epoxy or hide glue? I bought your Modern Wood Academy course and I am actually looking to avoid using hide glue in that project, would epoxy or Titebond Extend be good alternatives?

Hey Sean! Thanks so much for purchasing my course! That's awesome. Personally, I don't find Titebond Extend to give that much more open time compared to Titebond 1, 2 or 3. It's only a matter of a couple of minutes. Whereas hide glue (Old Brown Glue) and Epoxy will give you an extra half an hour (or more) to work through your glue-ups. They also don't have water in them, so it won't swell the joints which can sometimes make assembly much more difficult. Hope this helps!
