Fortunately I haven’t made any mistakes........I was so afraid of making mistakes that I watched the videos over and over....and over. I did experience a problem with a 20” round canvas, but was able to save with a quick sanding. In fact, I find two coats are better than one.

"We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents." -Bob Ross That quote works so well with resin, especially if you can improvise quickly. I can't count the number of times I've goofed (usually cuz I try to do too much, too quickly at once), and turn a potential huge mistake into a deviation from my original plan. Or I made something completely different because I dropped the wrong color in the resin, so I said "screw it" and picked a different mold. So I would say slow down. Plan ahead, and pay attention to the little details. Have your supplies ready and know your medium. If you're using a mold, even simple coasters, pay special attention to the corners, edges and creases. -Don't overpour. I do this one a lot with my intricate little molds. -Don't use too much pigment or glitter. Start with a little and add more if you think you need it. -Have an idea how much resin your project needs, but always have an extra mold (or 2 or 3) on the side for the extra. Also keep some extra pigment and additives like glitter. Some of my favorite things I've made have been from the leftovers from me mixing way too much resin. I've only been doing this for about 6 months, and I've only done maybe 10 pours (but I do a bunch at once), but I've learned a lot. My work isn't perfect, but I think I give good advice. People ask me for help in my FB resin group lol. So maybe with enough "happy accidents", I'll be too enough to teach my own class lol.

I would like to add the most unmentioned mistake to this already fantastic list. I see artists going strait to sanding after epoxy cures to correct dips, fisheyes. The big topic missed most of these videos is amine blush, of course until someone gets a bad blush problem then they make a video. Amine blush is a common topic in boat building and there is a lot of info on the web; but, not so much knowledge in the art, surfboard building industry. So, when doing a second coat or any top coat over epoxy, always wash your previous coat of epoxy with hot water(after its fairly cured), plain dish soap(no anti bacterial, perfume etc..) and an abrasive pad (scotch brite white) before sanding your epoxy for a re-coat(super easy). Even if it is non blushing epoxy as they can blush a bit in humid conditions. Amine blush is a waxy water soluble coating that happens when epoxy cures, especially if you pour in a high humidity situation(or dropping temps), so keep an eye on weather for storms or use heat lamps, heater or light bulbs to lower relative humidity around your project. Alcohol or solvents do not remove blush very well, again because it is water soluble. Blush can be visible but can also be invisible or subtle. Sanding before washing, rubs the blush into the surface and can prevent a good bond and possibly clouding or fish eyes. If temps drop to the dew point the blush can get into the cured epoxy rather than on top so check your weather. I only know about this from my one really bad experience and since then no problems as I always wash no matter what. Epoxy is not cheap so get out the hot soapy water between coats. Sand and then wipe down your project with acetone or denatured alcohol to remove contaminants. Let dry then re-coat; acetone drys faster. I wait 1/2 hour or smell the surface. If you smell acetone or alcohol it's not dry and can cause fish eyes. Once wiped down alway put on rubber gloves. The oils on your skin can cause fish eyes that may not disappear using a torch. One final tip, add your hardener first(swirl around the container on to the sides then add pigment if needed as the hardener tends to help dissolve pigments very well but also adding resin first can leave a thin layer of resin without hardener mixed into it around the edge of your container and you can get uncured spots at the end of your pour. Mix slowly and thoroughly to avoid bubbles and if painting a fill coat move that brush very slowly, same with varnish top coats. Oh and another most important, know your product. Call them and ask questions! Every resin is slightly different, Cheers, JW

OMG... I had covered several of my artworks in clear resin and then suddenly out of the blue I started getting long wavy lines thorugh the surface of the pieces... So sorry that happened to you! It could be that, or inconsistent temps. If you are pouring during the colder months, try giving your resin a warming bath (hot water) before pouring. Try to keep your space at a consistent temp while it's curing.

We had a low temp situation on a floor and the guy didn't put hardener first, the end of his pour was staying sticky so we set up heaters for about a week and it finally cured. It was a nail biter. It has held up for years now with no problems.

That may happen where your resin pools or if your substrate isn't level. Also if you overheat your resin (heating thins the resin) it will pool easier. You can try giving it 10/15 minutes in between your color pours. Don't wait too long so that your resin has begun to really set. Hope that helps!

I just started working with resin and when I make a piece I get a hazy film that takes up 75% of the piece in the middle. What am I doing wrong?
@KellieChasse
@KellieChasse 24 күн бұрын
It does take some practice, but there are a number of things to consider so it's hard to pinpoint. Here are my top potential reasons: Incorrect Resin-to-Hardener Ratio: Follow the resin-to-hardener ratio precisely. Too much or too little hardener can cause a cloudy or hazy appearance. Improper Mixing, or Moisture Contamination: Water or moisture in the resin or on the surface can cause a hazy appearance. Ensure your workspace and materials are completely dry. Finally: Temperature Issues: Resin curing can be affected by temperature. Make sure the room temperature is within the recommended range for your resin product. Too cold, temp fluctuations, or too hot can cause curing issues. Hope that helps! I also have a resin bundle course that may help on my website at www.kelliechassefineart.com/bundles/resin-bundle

I am currently sacrificing a rubber chicken, and doing the native dance to keep bubbles away. They are teeny tiny ones, and i guess most people would just let it go, but I’m super picky.

LOL, I think you are referring to lint/dust particles that float around the air and land in your resin. ;)

Can you sand too much? I think I did and I don’t know how to fix it? Please help. My piece is so dull after applying the top coat! How can I reverse the process? HELP! It’s my sister’s bridal flowers!

Oh no, so sorry!! I don't believe you can sand too much. Unless you sanded through to the actual art. Normally, once you put another coat on top it should be clear. I've always used Art resin without any problems.

I am feeling frustrated. The first time my coasters didnt cure properly and never hardened completely but I am sure it was because i did a wrong ratio of resin and hardener. But this time I am sure ratio is good but my tray and coasters still wont harden and are bendy. Can someone help me with this? Is my Dr. CRAFTY resin not good? Im i doing something wrong? 😭

Are you using pigments? If you use too much of them (liquid or powder) the resin will not cure properly as well

I am using Art Resin and never had a problem. Few other issues: room not warm enough, or temp changes, not mixing enough, too cold.

I'm so angry at myself because I've done five pieces over 3 times with resin and none turn out perfect. I wish I could post pics of a couple of them. I think I might sell them as is or pitch them. The pieces either end up with small dips or the edges don't get completely covered up. I am thinking of using the resin up and leaving it pros like yourself.

It sounds like it may be excess heat shrinkage from over use of a heat torch. Also make sure your room temp is warm and consistent for the first 24 hours.
@MileyonDisney
@MileyonDisney Жыл бұрын
NEVER! EVER! Use a torch on resin in a silicone mold! A torch is MUCH hotter than a lighter or heat gun, and it will melt the mold to the resin, ruining both!

@KellieChasse
@KellieChasse 3 жыл бұрын
Ugh, so sorry France, that is such a bummer when that happens! There is a number of things you can take a look at but here are the main culprits: Making sure your coat of resin is thick enough. If the resin is beginning to cure stop using your torch. Torching too close or creating enough heat in one spot that your resin starts to cure in those areas.
