LeAnn's version is amazing, but it's in a lower key. Kelly sings it in the original key. Not a huge difference, because that's usually just an adjustment for where the singer's natural range is. But I tend to prefer that the cover be in the original key, unless it's soprano and the cover singer is male or the song is mainly in bass range and singer is female. In those cases, the arrangement of the cover usually has to be more creative because of the discrepancies from the original version...

What a magnificent performance! This is one of the toughest song to sing.. Brandi would have been so proud that Kelly.chose to spotlight it on her show. I remember watching Kelly a few years ago on American Idol. Season 1! Kelly knocked it our of the park back then...and again NOW with The Story. Thank you Kelly!

just came across this song (can't believe never heard it before) and started to listen to as many versions as I can, kelly has a great voice but definitely does not have the nuances / emotion from Brandi's version. Part of it perhaps due to Brandi's voice is more country / rustic, thus fitting this song better. [just listened to this song and other songs sung by Brandi more carefully. Her version is absolutely better. I think most of the vocal fry's / quiverrings, cracks, vibratos, and etc., are carefully chosen and practiced, without losing pitch, which conveys so much more emotion / sincerity. Either that, or the songs again just fits her voice so much better.]

@@caryreynolds1176 Yeah. Thanks for pointing out, I did come across LeAnn Rimes version. I remember of her from years ago, not sure what happened to her, in terms of music career. Her cover of this song reminded me of how great her voice is / how great of a singer she is / how underrated she is as a singer. She did some pop stuff back in the days, i feel her voice, much more soulful in general, would have way been more suited to do country. I would place her cover of this song above Kelly Clarkson's version (i feel Clarkson's voice is amazing of course, but feel it's just much more suitable for pop.), and way more emotion. Brandi's version just can't be replicated I feel, with all her personal nuances / idiosyncrasies (natural or practiced) in her voice + singing.

About a year ago she was on an episode of *I Can See Your Voice* as a celebrity singer judge. Last year she released a new album called God's Work, that is a bit more liturgical, with chanting and other things. @@caryreynolds1176 thank you much for this. listening through your playlist right now. seems like for most part, whatever songs she's choosing to sing / perform, it's her choosing / she's comfortable in herself. (and again, she performs all of them wonderfully. she is such an underrated performer.) But part of me, more I hear her more recent performances / hearing how her voice + singing matured, and matured as a performer, more I feel she would do great doing country. She could have so kicked Carrie Underwood aside and carry on the country diva titles from Faith Hill / Shania Twain and what not. (I don't know my country genre that well, but just from what I casually encounter.)

@@ragingdemon9868 LeAnn is a much better singer than Carrie, who got a little better after American Idol but doesn't sound very good lately and uses a lot of autotune and audio processing. Shania Twain was a good singer for that type of country pop, but her voice is damaged. LeAnn's voice has gotten lower over the years as she;s gotten older. I don't think she wants to limit herself to country, which, although I'm not an expert on, encompasses numerous subgenres. Personally, I do not like most traditional country music, which all sounds the same to me and is monotonous. And I am not talking about older country like Hank Williams and even Johnny Cash, and I'm not talking about crossover hits. Or crossover artists like LeAnn and Crystal Gayle, who are among my favorite singers. I like Brett Eldredge when he sings standards.
