The Kelly Kettle that I have is the Kelly Kettle Basecamp model, and its 1.6 litre water capacity makes is a perfect solution for when I'm out with friends.

The Kelly Kettle Basecamp is a tad too large for solo hiking and camping, but I'm so 'sold' on the Kelly Kettle that I'm seriously considering purchasing their smaller 'Trekker' model which will be easier to pack and should even fit in a PLCE side pocket on my Karrimor SF Sabre 45.
I can and do use the 'fire tray' of the Kelly Kettle as a cooking stove, either with the grill or the 'hobo stove' attachment.
The design of the Kelly Kettle is super-efficient when it comes to burning twigs - even damp twigs - and it's really simple to light, but these homemade fire starters or fire lighters make the process even more simple.
The homemade fire starters are great and I use them in my Kelly Kettle, my twig stoves, to light camp fires, and at home for the fire pit. Making these homemade fire starters could be a fun activity for forest school sessions too!

I got a Kelly Kettle as a Christmas gift and love it! Your firestarter idea is brilliant, I've using them to light my wood stove in the house and find them as good if not better than a standard firelighter. They're a great way to use up old candles and if you're a woodworker like me, there's always wood waste around.

I still haven't taken the plunge to buy the Kelly Kettle Trekker yet for packability when solo hiking... maybe this year And thanks for your feedback on the firestarters. Had one for months now, flawless bit of kit, boils 1.5litres in 5 mins using 6 decent size pinecones. Found making a sort of tunnel to the air inlet using 3 bricks stops it smoking if the wind is swirling, fan the inlet for a turbo boil. Highly recommended for all just in case the power does go off in the near future. Best of British to you ;-j (edit: Get the Stainless Steel version, Aluminium may be lighter but is not foodsafe i believe ;-)

Interesting to read your comment on the aluminium version. My knee-jerk reaction was "it must be safe enough to pass safety tests if they're still making and selling them', but I have heard mention of issues with aluminium so I'll take a closer look - thank you

I have an old 1.6l one and for a days fishing on my own or with a friend it's rather bulky. I think I ought to invest in the Trekker version.

Agreed. As brilliant as they are, the 'Basecamp' is a bit of 'overkill' for solo use so the Trekker kit could be a great solution for when I'm out in the woods on my own

I bought one as a base camp kit later on the second one just has the Kettle and the hobo stove and bass it's good to be prepared just in case or if I want to make something to eat outside

Excellent! I have too many stoves, but I'd like to get the Kelly Kettle Trekker model for solo hiking. The basecamp is great, but a bit of overkill when it's just me packing out. The Trekker should fit nicely in the PLCE side pocket on my @KarrimorSF Sabre 45

For a smaller kettle, look at the Mkettle from Ghillie Kettles. Smaller than the Trekker and can be used effectively with a Trangia burner as well. Hard anodized version is the best to go for imo

By 'M Kettle' do you mean their 'Maverick' model? If so I've just looked online and it is interesting. Do you have one?

@@ExplorerJust No, not the Maverick. I have the hard anodized Mkettle, which is tiny...10cm wide 17cm tall. Holds a pint and brews in 5 - 6 minutes. Alcohol stove can fit in the inverted fire base when packed and 100ml travel bottle of meths fits down the chimney. Got mine awhile ago and love it. Was approx £60
