Kelly, I've known you most of my young life. I've surfed against you in contest's... You've flown in on a Helicopter for "our" heat... You won, obviously!!! You were very good friends with my wife. Your brother Sean, Gordon Lawson & Eric Finny, etc... I used to work & surf for Ocean Juice & when you were signed by Quiksilver, they sent 4 board's to Ocean Juice & I was there, when they came in. my favorite surfer at the time, was Tom Curren! Because of that, I encouraged you to go with Channel Islands at the time. We used to free surf a lot together at 2nd Light, boardwalk & the inlet. I will never come up to you & act like we're BFF's or anything like that, but I am so proud of you & what you have accomplished & then some!!! You are a legend & I appreciate your dedication & devotion to the sport of surfing. I'm positive that you do not remember me, now... But, we used to have a great competitive camaraderie & respect for each other, way back in the day! I never beat you in a heat, but I was always right up there with ya!!! You were always so humble & so helpful to me, when it came to surfing & learning new maneuvers, etc. I know that you've most likely met millions of people, throughout your surfing career... And the fact that I know Sean & Skippy, doesn't really matter... But I've always been a huge fan of you & your family & your awesome & incredible ability to rip the living hell out of every wave you pop up on!!! No matter where, when, how, why, etc! You will probably never see or ever read this, but you are a huge inspiration & and local legend, here in the B.C. East Coast of Brevard County!!! As well as World Wide!!! You are a huge inspiration to me & the world over & abroad!!! Personally, I wish you all the success in your attempt to win another world title & Illy😮root my ass off for you, in every heat you surf in. I know other people, reading or watching, might think my comment is lame or dumb , reaching or whatever, but you were always cool AF to me & my wife (Kelly Young, who bartended at IR, in Cocoa Beach) Curly blonde hair... I tell people that you & I were cool, but no one ever believes me. 😔 I'm just a regular guy, that wanted to go Pro, from Cocoa Beach. It never went my way for me, as far as going Pro... 2A is as far as I ever got. Which ain't shit, I know... Growing up & looking up To Matt Kechele, Rich Rudolph, Todd & Dack Holland, Gordon Lawson, Sean & Skippy, The Lopez Bro's... The Hobgood's, Bill McMillan, "Desperados" , CT Taylor, Bill & Joe Johnson, Chad (Rat Boy) from Ocean Juice. Todd Markham, Mason Sapp, Erik Finny, John Taylor, I could go on & on... Derrick White and the both of his sister's, one I think you went to prom or homecoming with ...John Holeman, I could literally name drop all day. But, it probably doesn't even matter. Sean's Bday was just a couple of days ago & Skippy was at a golf Tournament at Cocoa Beach golf club a few day's ago as well. Regardless, ya just don't remember me & it's all good, but if ya were to ask Sean or Gordan who Shannon Young & Kelly Young are... They'd definitely refresh your memory. All I honestly wish for you is to crush it on tour & do what you do best , WIN! You are a living legend & I'm just stoked, that I had the opportunity to not only know you & hang with ya, on occasion & surf with & against ya in local comps, etc. keep being you Kelly... You are stronger & wiser than you know!!!

surf ranch is awesome but you appreciate it being there. its perfection and watching surfers is like the roman coliseum of surfing. It doesn’t show on videos.

Question - If the FRK and FRK+ are Kelly's go to boards, then where does the Great White fit into his quiver? How easy does it paddle and catch waves?

Every generation must rediscover the truth. if you prefer a wide tail, a twin fin with a keel works best. if you like a narrow tail, a three fin with a large center fin and two small, raked side fins work best, I have seen a narrow pin tail twin fin work great. i could never tell the difference in a swallow tail with the outline broken up. reno abelira and craig Wilson used to decimate with a single fin with two side keels so not to spin out. Malcom Campbell used to ride a Bonzer side keel at Silver strand and it worked great. Have a good life.
