The world champ won this heat by surfing like a hormonal 13 year old while Slater got smooth tubes and put on a ridiculous clinic on roundhouse cutbacks into vertical snaps. The Brazilians are uniformly boring to watch surf save Dora.

@annoying guy the WSL is responding to the Brazilian market. Lots of fans buying merchandise. One contest is in Brazil and lets face it, the surf there doesn't merit being one of the 10 contest venues to select the world's best surfer. I am not slamming the top Brazilian surfers, they are fantastic. What I am pointing out is the WSL is a business and pro surfers are billboards to sell product. They would be smart to put a few Indonesians on tour, 245 million Indonesians to buy product and no national sports heros equals a massive market opportunity. In contrast, America has slightly more people, 331 million but football, baseball, and basketball dominant the sports consumer market. Australia has only 25 million people and like the USA, the surfing market for sales is pretty much topped out. A final point; notice that once Slater dropped channel Islands and quicksilver he hasn't won a title. Likewise, same for Tommy Curren. The main point is if you think marketing merchandise isn't the driving force in professional surfing you are delusional at best.

This is not Cocoa Beach bias but he was robbed..now the U.S. can complain. You leave the best surfer of all time, and the man who put surfing on the map, out of the Olympics and he just straight beat Italo. Kelly caught lots of shitty waves trying to find small barrels while Italo was on the big long set waves that allow him to do explosive turns. KS's flow and style is so much more pleasing to the eyes, but you can't win with only good style. Also the bias against Italo is mostly a nationalistic thing. If you were brazilian, they'd be no doubt Italo won. Italo has explosive power. Kelly unfortunately lacked explosiveness, and fell too many times. But I will admit Italo is ugly to watch, and would have loved for the judging criteria to favor good style rather than just brute strength.

Italo with a lot of nothing set up work while Kelly is actually surfing the wave. Italo somewhat repetitive on the inside too. Kelly’s rails were also firing while italos weren’t as clean. Kelly makes works the flatter sections while italo doesn’t do much with flat sevtions

With manipulating judging in favour of "the greater good of surfing" you do way more damage than Kelly's win ever could. I'm a fan of Italo and his surfing, but the judging in this heat was gut wrenching. Kelly put on one of the best displays of surfing I've ever seen - speed, power, FLOW, creativity and variety. The WSL judging was abominable in this heat and all of Kelly's heats. Apparently, the WSL isn't about great surfing. WSL = teeny bopper BS. No point in watching.

Italo kept doing "carving" snapbacks on the shoulder, whereas Kelly was doing carving snapbacks on the wall, and off-the-lips on the lip... instead of under a not-more-critical lip, the way Italo was doing his. This "hitting the button" thing that they've been hyping for years to try to cover up kook-pleasing (kooks can't surf frontside, or even that well backside) judging is ridiculous. Bobby Martinez backside (still!) does carving snapbacks on that button (where they belong), and carving roundhouses on the shoulder (where only roundhouses belong), and hits the lip, not the I'm-not-good-enough-to-hit-the-lip "button" below the (steeper, of course) lip, when he is going to sweep instead of carve. The general public is going to more and more think of surfing as a no-style kook sport, if the "he did a such-and-such" "yeah, but was it a good such-and-such?" "maybe not, but it was a SUCH-AND-SUCH" trend continues... and, real rippers already think of the "top" competitive surfers, at least on the male side, (and fake style Gilmore) this way.

I counted the same basic face turn back to white water done 5 times that wave with 3 others that were different... Whereas Kelly got a super clean barrel and came out clean and did a different turn for every maneuver, reading the wave perfectly.

They just don't score for flow. They say they do as it's on the criteria with 'speed power and flow", but Kelly is one of the only guys left on tour with speed and flow! Mick and Joel had it in spades at well. Non stop from beginning to the end of a wave. I love Italo's surfing, no doubt, he's a beast! But, Kelly's two waves were far better to watch than Italo's IMO. So much variety and flow!

For this time, I would say I didn't like Italo's backhand style. I liked more Kelly's flow. Many times Kelly has passed some heats helped by the judges during all his career, but this time he has been damaged by judges.

Kelly’s surfing was magnificent to watch in this heat and previous. All underscored!! Beautiful lines and very difficult for anyone else to emulate. Class, style and mastery. The judges are way off on the scoring, so much so I am not going to watch anymore. Someone should start scoring bottom turns, or at least penalising the wiggle setup…terrible.

i am getting sick of watching blow tails. Call me old but i miss power surfing, Kelly, Pottz, Andy, Occy. the air game is impressive but when these guys miss every turn trying to set up for one air its a waste and not stylish. do your airs but dont waste the wave searching. just my useless opinion
