You guys rock! Good info about "petting" birds. When you think about it all creatures have likes and dislikes. One of my cats hates to have his stomach scratched. Another one allows petting only on the head and tail, nothing in between. Personally, I cannot stand having my feet touched. No pedicures for me! I might bite, too. So glad to see you guys. When I saw Pebble for the first time, I new that she is special. She is intelligent (doing shows), expressive, many-sided, sweet and a real pall. All female animals and birds have a season time. But it does not last all year. Or all the time. ALSO, it depends who raised that bird that you choose . If only a male raised them they sometimes will prefer a male. It's true often times if they were raised by a female. More due to the tone and sound of the voice we have learned. Sometimes they will learn to love or like the other one you live with, but it's not alwayse the case. Some are just a one person bird of there choice. We raised Parrots of different kinds. Have one of these birds , Same actions. Cuddle with you. Very Loud birds. Sounds just like Pebbles rages, all but the one word. A real attitude. Funny Wonderfull, Smart birds. I love Pebbles. She acts just like my Daughters. Greys are best Talkers and Smartest Birds , But not all will be a Cuddling Bird that's for sure, even if hand raised. Takes a lot of hands on, AND work for some. Smart as a 4 or 5 year old Child. Unbelievable Birds. I love Birds.

I love Pebbles, I have a cockatiel named Harry, (dirty Harry), he's 25 yrs. old now, and funny as anything. He can be real noisy when I leave the room or go out. When I was in an apartment I was afraid I'd get kicked out, you could still hear him in the underground parking lot, he is so spoiled.

That no petting is good to know. I have a budgie, who because of health issues, doesn't like my hand, picking up and medicating etc. He is much better and will sit on the open cage door and visit. He understands up and will sit on my finger but after a few moments starts nipping and pecking the funny thing is he gets upset when I put him back biting harder.....lol!

Thanks for the info about petting birds. Its true what you are saying that birds are not to be petted like a dog or a cat. They get excited even to the point of nipping or try to feed you. I only touch him on his feet or his head and that way he does not get too out of control.

Having lived with parrots for decades I think birds, like people have different personalities I’ve raised one from a baby and have had 4 parrots at the most but I think I’ve pet my birds all over and haven’t had trouble. I think it’s more when a bird gets overstimulated and this causes territorial behavior. The instinct to draw in a mate and drive out any others is overwhelming at nesting times. That being said I have generally avoided back rubbing but I help them preen feathers on wings and tail feathers, tickle under wings and even peeled their beaks with no bad behaviors. I think with you being clearly spending the most time with her she will naturally get territorial over you and perhaps feel the need to fight off other “rivals”. This usually occurs when a new person or perceived rival shows up and is perceived to be getting attention. You just have to be aware this nesting territorial nature can be very strong at times and watch how your bird is responding. The perceived rival is a threat to the bond they have with you and this is very serious to a bird in nesting mode. They don’t understand the concept of 3, only 2! Now birds that live in colonies like monk parakeets for example do better living communally.
