The Call Of Ktulu is a Metal instrumental classic. Metallica's bassist (deceased) Cliff Burton was a Classical Music aficionado & used to encourage the rest of the band to listen to Bach & Mahler. It certainly shows in the way they wrote their early albums. As for growling vocals, well, Metal always has had a tendency to explore the dark side of the human psyche & to navigate such difficult and different ideas (from the mainstream, anyway), the vocals create a certain atmosphere that is unique. I suggest that you listen (and react) to Insomnium's latest masterpiece 'Pale Morning Star', which will help you overcome the abrasive texture of growling. The song is a modern masterpiece, musically, lyrically and is simply beautiful and pure.

This was the first metal song I heard as a teenager in the 80s. I was a big fan of H P Lovecraft's writing at the time, and also a big fan of Dungeons & Dragons, but I'd just moved to a new city and didn't know anyone who played D&D. Then I made a friend who was into both, who introduced me to another friend of like mind and we started a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay game that lasted for all of high school. Musically I was a blank slate - didn't really have any idea of what I liked for myself. Kinda knew what I didn't really like, but no really strong opinions in any direction. Then one of my new friends learned I liked Lovecraft and said "listen to this Metallica song called Call of Ktulu" to which I was like "eww metal?". Because to me at that time "metal" meant Bon Jovi or Poison, which I couldn't stand. This is the track that changed all of that. This was the first time I understood that metal could contain real talent and ability. And I was hooked.

Oh man, she's crying. 'Cause, yes, it's that great! And to make this more special, this was Cliff Burton's favorite Metallica song. I'm almost 43. Been listening to these songs since the 80's and grew deep into it when I hit my teens in the 90's, got a drum kit and wanted to be a rock star. I love music, all types of music. I live it and breathe it. And when I see people have such deep passionate reactions like this to the music I love, it really hits my sentimental side and tells me how special it truly is. I'm so blessed to have had these years of music and the life I've had around it.

I've watched a few more of your vids and the way you guys have the two pronged approach to this is incredible - Rich is buzzing off the sounds and the fact that he knows what's about to happen, then when it does the satisfying 'my work here is done' smile, followed by Kel's heartfelt but informative analysis of what this music does for people backed up by her clear technical expertise in all things musical is what this shit is all about. Rock on guys - much love from Ireland.

As an analog writer/percussionist, nothing makes me more disgusted that most music these days are put together by hitting 3-10 keys on a computer and having someone sing to it. Now even, the vocalists F**k ups are corrected. The last band I had took three years working one day a week together to have a three hours worth of set lists.

I was listening to rock in the 60s and 70s, and actually stopped in the 80s because I just didn't care for the new brand of metal rock (and especially punk). But I must admit, that was the first time I had heard that song, and it was great. And you're right Kel, screw the people (like me apparently) who did not and will not give something a chance. I know I'm late to the party here, I'm just now discovering your channel. But let me just say, not only has this music been a staple in my upbringing, and by my own choice. I grew up listening to my dad's classic rock all my young life and could name every band that came on the radio bc he'd always ask after the 1st 2 seconds of any song "Who's this?" Lol but I chose to venture out past that genre bc my ear wanted something thicker, a little more muscle in the tone. And Metallica was the gateway drug when I was 13. Call of Ktlulu, Orion, To Live is to Die....those were my go-to songs to show others that it's not all screaming and beating on detuned guitars. These guys were barely 22 years old when they recorded this. The degree of talent to play at such a high level and being that young always amazed me. I absolutely love your reactions to this music. Bc you already have a mind for music, although a much different sound, but equally as complicated, your senses for what well played music sounds like are already tuned for it. Like you said, without the classics, nothing would be what it is today. For the most part, music like this is rarely produced anymore and if so, with little recognition. Thank you for opening your mind and ears to these masterpieces. This is what the metal community really is all about. Uniting us all as one with the power of music 🤘🤘🤘

I think with your classical music upbringing, you would really enjoy Metallica's S&M album. It's a bunch of their songs played live with the San Francisco Phil Harmonic Orchestra. And one new song, No Leaf Clover they made for this album. It's pretty damn cool. I've always been a rocker/metealhead, but I have always found watching a symphony perform to be pretty amazing. Just the amount of musicians that come together and play in such amazing harmony.

He inspired this track, but far from the creator title. 1/3 of riffs are derivated from his chord progression, and that's it. The real creator of this track is Cliff who'd put all the harmonies, combined all parts together and dropped his bass on top of it.

I'm a huge fan of all types of music and have watched quite a few of your videos but never commented. I have to admit this is the first time I've listened to a Metallica piece - have always resisted heavy metal - but I admit I loved it and will be added them to my playlists. Great comments too, Kel. You go girl!!

Dave mustaine actually wrote the song before he got kicked out.

mustaine was a brilliant writer. no doubt. megadeth is great. but reality is he wasnt on guitar when this was recorded. and did dave have anything to do with clif burton putting wah through his bass? no. so this song is what it is. metallica went on to write and record iconic songs that dave had no input into. and justice, the master of puppets album for example. black album. list goes on. mustaine was great. is great. but he and metallica are two different things. cheers mason. rock on

I think you two are so cool! Loving your videos, especially the reactions to Mr Blue Sky and Turn to Stone! Keep on rocking and ignore the idiots who leave stupid comments: you are really appreciated. Not sure if you've heard any Kate Bush but as a Brit she's a national treasure and I think you'll like her. This is a good place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJbVfGewrLKFh9k

I first heard Call of Ktulu about a year after Ride the Album was released. It was a step beyond what was being released at the time. You have to remember although Heavy Metal was gaining traction at the time With Van Halen's 1984, Twisted Sisters Stay Hungry, Quiet Riot's Metal Health, Scorpions Love at First Sting, Def Leppard's Pyromania, Motley Crue's too fast for Love when Metallica hit with this album it was considered too heavy and almost dangerous. It wouldn't be until Master of Puppets until Metallica punched their way to making a name for themselves, and helped the other big three Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax find the market. At The time Ride the Lightning was a niche. Thrash was almost a separate genre. And Justice changed everything and suddenly this is what Metal was it had evolved according to the mainstream. It wasn't until I became a rhythm guitarist in my first band that I went back and bought the album, because at the time Metal was changing. This, Orion, and to Live is to die are some of my favorite Metal compositions, along with Maidens Ides of March and Loss fer words, ACDC's Chase the Ace which are simple compositions compared to the layers and complexity of Call of Ktulu.
