When I first saw this comic, this song IMMEDIATELY came to mind. It's about an old man who remembers his past encounter with a mythical water horse called a kelpie.

I'm Irish and when I was young, I would often walk through wetlands with my friend. I still remember my mum telling me not to go there and saying that the kelpie would take us. Now I realize she just wanted me to be safe around water, but I remember that sometimes when I'm around lakes and rivers to this day.

folktales are dark man. Thankfully I heard about the kelpie and what it does from a video I had watched, so I wasn't horrified by this.... much..... The moral of the story of a kelpie was to keep other people from touching a horse that was not their own, most likely to defuse any thoughts of steel someone's horse back in the day. I think the horror folktales we see from back in the day, were used as that time to keep a lesser amount of people doing stupid stuff. To us now a days though, I might be more of a horror story we like to believe is true

Wow, really? I wish that worked now. People feel like they should feed other peoples horses (which can be dangerous, if the horse is on medication, is aggressive, or is overweight), or even ride other people's horses, which can get the horse put down if they (rightfully) try to get a stranger off their back. Thanks for this comment, I really learned a lot from it :)

Tbh I find this more heartbreaking than scary, the poor guy lost his friend, they were just young boys exploring and stumbles upon what they assumed was a wild majestic horse only for it to turn out to be a horrific monster when they tried to pet it, it's sad that two friends simply spending time together turned into a nightmare from a monster horse that was gonna drown them and eat them and only one of them made it out alive while the other drowned and was most likely eaten afterwards, it seems to have traumatized the man so much that all he could do was think of that horrific day and the monster that killed his friend and almost him.

So beautifully creepy! But I'm kinda curious now, after seeing the surviving boy making sculptures of tangled wood...what if that's all the kelpie ever was? Just a tangle of sunken roots and water-weed that they got dragged into by a current while swimming, with one boy drowning and the other bearing survivor's guilt for the rest of his days.

I remember first learning about kelpies and thinking “thank god we don’t have mythological creatures like that here.” Only to then learn that the things we have over here are equally as terrifying, if not more. Though these legends serve a purpose more than to scare us. The legend of the kelpie tells us to be safe around water. The folklore where I live tells us the dangers of winter and the dangers of traveling alone.

This reminds me of my time living in Scotland, and daydreaming about kelpies, running around conker trees. I have now moved away and I am still aching to go back to my home in Scotland. This song that is playing reminds me of my prime when I was watching animations with kelpies and this song playing, and thinking about it for the rest of the day. Now, for Coronavirus, I might not be able to go back until I am done with school , which will be in at least another seven years. Thank you for reminding me of those times. :)

Personally, the kelpie is one of my favorite monsters ever. What drew me to it was because of the way it looks and kills. *For those who don't know:* As seen, they disguise themselves as a beautiful white horse and lure unsuspecting people onto their backs or just to touch them. However, this is a HUGE mistake. Once coming within physical contact, the kelpie with throw off it's facade, thus revealing it's true form. Helpless to do anything, it's "prey" is trapped to the kelpie's body as it dives underwater and drowns them while eating them, leaving only the liver to float to the surface. Hope this cleared things up and have a great day/night/etc. 😁😁😁

I think porcelaindoll 's premise behind the kelpie story was that an old man was thinking back on an encounter he had with a kelpie when he was a boy. Since it seems no one believed his story, the way he got over the trauma was through a creative outlet, by building sculptures of kelpies, eventually becoming a nature sculpture artist. The kelpie never really came back, but the boy never forgot his encounter with it, so he's been wary ever since.

Perfect... now I have two colors of horses to be scared of... one of which is more likely to remind my pure-ass self of a Unicorn and get me killed if I meet one. Though... I also have only heard of these things going after men/boys, which makes sense as they might be more likely to ride or approach a lone horse. I assume Kelpies have no gender preference like any good predator, but could someone clarify for me??

I also heard that they also shift for breeding/mating reasons. Shift to a handsome men and rape/atract womans - shift to a beautiful woman and rape/seduce men to have children. Kelpies are celtic folklore creatures that look like white horses on land. They make people, usually kids, get on their back or touch them, then dive into the water, revealing their true forms and drowning their victims.
