Alcoholism isn't an individual problem, it's something that affects your family, your work or worse, if you drink and drive it's a danger to all. It is not only absurd but also a violation of the sovereignty of other states. If a country's laws would supersede the law of the land where its citizens reside, then for instance a man could beat his wife in Germany given that in his country that action is legal. As an expat who lived in Korea for more than 7 years I'll say this: 1. You can do it, but don't travel or get a job where medical tests are required. Also, snitches do exist but so does Mary Jane. They're strict for sure. 2. You need a VPN or most sites are gonna be blocked. Not all hotels or motels have the secret cameras. Some places are regularly swept clean, but just try to avoid the shady cheap places. Or you might see your lover featured on one of those websites. 3. I guess Koreans are genetically prone to gambling addiction, so many actually do it overseas. But there are always places where you can find people gambling in private. They even made a Korean drama about it. 4. I saw so many people with tats. My friend got one, and I'm pretty sure the guy wasn't a doctor. 5. Police don't really care, but it depends on the city or place. Most places don't really care even though there are signs and CCTV. Smoking zones are utilized for the most part. 6. LOL Too true. They always make the announcement in the PC Cafés, and kids gotta get up and leave to go back home. I even got IDed one time. Some PC Bangs are really strict. 7. Never knew. But I know how possessive some Koreans can be. My ex wouldn't let me see my friend girls anymore. Even deleted their contact numbers, but I had one of those girls. Not all of them are like that.

3:36 I can actually answer this question b/c New Zealand has this same law about weed. They do blood tests. Weed can still be present in your bloodstream for a month so in New Zealand, they take blood tests when you get back. I know this because two of my friends from New Zealand wanted to try weed in Canada, and said they had to try it over a month before they left for New Zealand. I'm going to assume they do the same thing in Korea if they suspect that you did drugs abroad

Your friends were either lying, or misinformed. I've told cops directly to their face that I smoked weed (in NZ), and they did nothing. They don't care. They have to catch you in the act, and even then, you will probably just get a warning. There's no way they're testing NZ citizens at the border. They have neither the time or money for that.

With the popularity of Tattoos in Korea these days, I really wish they would create a separate education/accreditation course specifically for it. Like you mentioned, becoming a doctor is too much to just do tattoos, but I think it's a good idea for them to have some medical knowledge. So it would be nice if they had a schooling program specifically for tattoo artists to become legal practitioners, but have them learn some potential health risks/sanitary requirements in replacement of a full doctor license.

@@powbobs tattoos are artistic. The body is the canvas. For most folk who get tattoos they hold a personal meaning. Yes, some can be tacky especially daft ones that folk tend to get while drunk on holiday or by letting their friend with a tattoo gun draw on them but those are more the exception rather than the rule.

In Scotland they have to have a specific license to tattoo as it is classed as a medical procedure. Everyone who wants a tattoo must fill out a form with various health details as strict regulations are in place. That said, you still get some who are dodgy so word of mouth for reputation of the artist is also key. To be safe, you have to do your research on the artist/studio to be sure of the hygiene and quality of the artist you wish to employ. I currently have 6 tattoos and will be having another done in the new year.

I knew about a few of these already, but the smoking one is crazy to me. I knew there were specific areas where you shouldn't smoke because i see the no smoking signs, but I still see smokers any time i walk outside. It's also definitely crazy how Korea controls what its citizens do when they aren't even in Korea! On one hand, how would they know if a Korean did something while abroad, but on the other hand, if they did find out, it's illegal so they would get in big trouble.

Tattoos and piercings can easily spread bloodborne diseases like hepatitis so I think that's why it's so highly regulated.

Yeah, but making tattooing illegal is actually a major health hazard. In most countries, tattoo artist need to be professionally licensed: they need a permit that can show customers that they follow safety regulations (sterile needles etc). You know it's a safe artists because they have the papers to show it. If you make tattooing illegal, there is no way to ensure that there is a standardized, regulated level of hygiene. Tattoo artists will be able to do whatever they want. Most of the time this is fine (because of word of mouth you kinda know who the good artists are) but there will always be some fuckers that will ruin it for everyone. Just recently I watched a KZbin video of a guy getting tattooed in Korea while drunk (which you should NEVER do because alcohol acts as a blood thinner). The artists gets away with this shit simply because the whole thing is done underground. This wouldn't have happened if there were actual, legal safety guidelines regulated by the government.

Only if you go to a tattooist/piercer who doesn't follow proper procedures, use sterile needles, etc and no reusing. Our tattoo places in Australia are very closely monitored and they are spotlessly clean. I've had several tattoos at my local tattoo place without any issues.

The part about drugs use including weed while overseas, p0rn and smoking in public is very much true from where I am - Singapore. The airport police do random checks on flights inbound from Amsterdam - pee test, that is how they find out if you have weed in your system. There are always ways to get access to xxx materials online nowadays. Smoking gets you fined, repeated offences can get you into greater fines or jail time.

Something most Koreans don’t know is that SK was the first Asian country to legalize medical marijuana then Thailand legalized medical a few months later. Then Thailand legalized it to incentivize tourism. Koreas drug hesitancy might stem from the Opium trade but as marijuana was a native plant to Korea, it actually has roots becoming outlawed to the Korean War and GI’s would get high and return to base. So they had the leader jump on board the War on Drugs that was booming in the US and that’s how it happened. Pre-war, people would just pick it from the side of the war and smoke a little. Usually as a home pain remedy. I feel like I should wait to hear everything before writing… Also what I usually say for people to understand the concept of overseas drug use for Koreans is that as a Korean Citizen, you are expected to follow the laws of the country. When you leave Korea, you don’t stop becoming a Korean Citizen. So it would be like Murder or Rape. If you do it overseas doesn’t mean you didn’t do a crime. Similar to how people do sex tourism. Where they travel from high age of consent countries to low age of consent countries to rape children. If you leave Korea and have sex with a child, even if it’s legal in that country, you will still be charged with rape when you get back to Korea. The US has laws that apply to their citizens when abroad such as sex with anyone under 18 no matter the age of consent in the country AND the age of consent in your state since some states have consent laws lower than 18 years old.

They aren't as guarded around consent and touch in schools. Kids will run up and ask to sit on your lap and ask for a hug. In American schools and kindergartens there's way more rules around touch. Also kids and toilets. Some kids will literally come out with their pants down asking for help and they are 7 yrs old. Everyone is unfazed. Farmers pulling out their d and peeing in front of me on the side on the road. Happened a lot. Broad daylight. Kissing booth houses and business clubs with secret nude staff etc in private rooms etc. Massage parlors etc. Having "signs" and location right near normal shops and even school bus stops. Massage parlors are also illegal for liscence in Korea unless you are blind and the work os reserved for them. Never saw it affect anyone. Not legal but culturally done.. korean adjussis just coming up to foreign girls and asking if they are prostitutes in broad day light asking for rates. Happened to me and I was wearing teacher clothes at 1pm. Im sure Thai and Vietnamese women abroad don't get that anymore and those that do... the guys KNOWS he is racist as hell.

Both do have major impacts on the brain chemistry as well as anything we ingest. Gut is first brain, this feeds the nuero brain and the brain feeds the heart and nerve brain via the elements we ingest. For example the reason why we have hangovers is actually brain swell due to blocking of vitamin b. More it happens it creates micro bleeds. When we have memory missing it’s due to severe swells or micro bleeds from lack of vitamin b getting delivery to the brain. For some the drugs we take regulate chemicals in the brain… but all amino acids are regulators for senses, mental health, and functionality of organs. Certain drugs block the creation of these amino acids.

I cant believe that smoking is illegal in public places in Korea. I have never seen so many young smoking people on the streets like in Seoul. Young girls smoking like no bother, All night time area streets literally covered in cigarette butts. I have not seen anything like that in any other country. I think it has to do with price of cigarettes, which is only 4 USD or 4500 KRW, same as price of one can of beer in 7/11. For example in Ireland where I come from cigarretes costs 17 usd. and beer in bar just 6-7 usd.

Great video! Weed is still illegal in the US at the federal level. If you are caught with drugs at the border, you may be subject to fines and other penalties. Likewise it is illegal to transport weed interstate (that places it in the federal jurisdiction.) There are drug dogs at US ports as well. I read about some wealthy Korean being investigated by the SK government for gambling in Macau not too long ago. Thanks for doing this one.

In Australia it's illegal to basically smoke anywhere near shops or food places. It's not enforced by police but people will let you know also the price is like $30 AUD for a pack of 20's. buuuuut there is an abundance of illegal cigarettes sold undercounter for much cheaper and a lot of Australians now Vape. Australia has just made nicotine prescription only. It's crazy.

About smoking. It's also illegal in my country to smoke in public. And I understand that smokers don't like to smell their smoke. But neither do I. Why should I suffer from your bad habit while I'm not smoking because passive smoking is more dangerous than active one. There's a popular phrase that says You like to go sledding, you also like to drive a sleigh. So take the conveniences by your actions.

Porn is a poison in society so I disagree, I think more countries should ban it. That is one thing I like about your country. You can meet your “human needs” without porn. Porn creates so many toxic consequences. I like some of the moral laws you have. Better than in the west. Social responsibility is lacking and sexual responsibility and morality is becoming less and less, it’s a shame.

I loved the drug laws in Korea. They were awesome. I have sensory processing disorder and the smell of weed gives me a meltdown. I hate it and the smell carries. It is disgusting. Also drugs are associated with trafficking and crime that hurts a lot of people including children internationally. The porn restriction is also great. I work in a school in England and students see it on their smartphone when they are 12. All adult Korean guys use VPN so it doesn't affect them. Duck duck go is the search engine foreigners use with VPN. Korean kids dont have accidental porn use as much as other countries.

Cheating is absolutely wrong. Imagine you are a home maker and you are financially dependent on your partner and your partner cheat on you . It must be heartbreaking. In my country polygamy is legal and you don't have to take permission from you wife. It is really hard for a woman to give divorce. Doing a job is not possible unless you have a man's permission( we don't have any law like that. It is socially acceptable which is hard to break) And ofcourse male guardian don't give permission to their women to job because a working women is considered as a who**. Now you are in a position with no financial stability, you can't divorce, your husband remarried. It is heartbreaking. Some of my aunt and sisters are victim of it

The only thing that I smoke are cigars, but the question that comes to mind is how the Korean government would treat a situation wherein someone who doesn't smoke has THC's in there system, simply because they were in a room where other people were smoking dope. THC's can remain in your system for a very long time. In some cases, for up to 6 months. The government can't possibly expect their citizens to isolate themselves for 6 months, before returning to Korea.

I've always wondered why porn wasn't illegal everywhere since it clearly fits under the heading of prostitution, but, apparently, porn is considered "acting" 😑 It may seem like its availability serves a purpose, but the negative psychological and social effects watching it has on people definitely cancels that out--especially on kids.

Ok the 1st and 3rd ones are wild to me. The fact that you can still get in trouble for doing something outside your country just blows my mind. And I’m curious about the last one. So I seen something about in Japan where if you catch your spouse having an affair and also aware of who the affair is with, that you can not only sue your spouse but the person they’re having the affair with as well. Does Korea have something similar to this?

South Africa has the same rules regarding smoking. It was funny when it started but its actually very nice now. (we even call the tax on cigarettes, and alcohol, sin tax)

The assessment I've made on why Korea and other nations in Northeast Asia have similar laws are largely due to influence from western organized religion influences in the 19th and 20th century. South Korea I find has been subject to a significant amount of influence from religious organizations affiliated or similar to the motive of the John Birch Society. It is also that if you are a citizen you enjoy the perks and carry the responsibilities of citizenship always - you don't stop being the citizen of your country by travellnig abroad. As a owner of another very strong passport, I'm also under my law when out side of my own country, but also if I Do somethnig that is illegal in there, but not in my country, my country gives me protection. "You can sue them in your country - but we don't hand over our citizens."

No it's not overboard they adultery they're divorce rates going up because the adultery law was removed. If a child knows they're not going to be punished then they're going to get out of control. And that's what's happening in Korea now that they've removed the adultery laws. Barrier to temptation is gone. Lower moral standards is something that you should be fighting against instead of saying I don't know. I pray the patriarchy regains control in Korea and throughout the world.

3:32 Just to answer your question - weed is detectable in a blood sample or urin sample for up to 7 days, so if you returned to SK and were randomly asked to submit to testing upon arrival, you could get caught that way 🤷‍♀

One of my old Katusa friends got caught doing weed in Amsterdam. How? He also cheated on his GF in Amsterdam and the GF went through his photos and found the one of him doing weed and sent it to the police. They dropped the charges though ( his family has connections), but the fact he was arrested he though his mom was going to murder him. I had never seen a 25 year old so scared of his mom until that point.

Because weed is pretty benign while 2 of the most dangerous drugs (alcohol & nicotine) are legal. Mandy, you do not get addicted to marijuana. That’s simply nonsense that was originally propagated by Hearst & DuPont in the 30s to outlaw their biggest competitors (the hemp industry). Happened in the 1930s. America has a lot to answer for :(

These are the things that Kelsey The Korean is concerned about? Law is integral to culture. Understand the culture of a country and you will better appreciate why such laws were made.

I was not expecting the laws to be this weird in korea. I think the weirdest law I can think of in the US is it is illegal to wash a donkey in your bathtub on a sunday night before midnight in kansas. I genuinely have no idea why that is a law but it is not enforced.
