KelTec RDB upgrades and firing issues

That happened to me. The gas block isnt adjusted correctly. Needs to retain more gas to fully cycle the BCG. Follow Kel-Tec's instructions to adjust the gas setting and I suspect your problem will disappear.

Agree, I was running into issues with the RDB, calibrated the gas system and it's flawless. I think a lot of folks, myself included, just assume it's like an AR-15 and you don't need to dial in the gas system. You have to dial in the gas system. This is a fantastic rifle for the price, but it does require some work from the user.

You are correct, sir! You are supposed to load one round in your mag with the gas block turned to the left counterclockwise, 12 clicks, and if it locks the bolt back after that one shot, you could start turning it to the right, but only load one round so you don’t end up having a malfunction. Just make sure that the final gas selection you make Will walk the boat back after shooting one round out of the magazine.

Add a brass catcher to the ejection port to keep your casings clean, and keep hot brass out of your shirt pocket.

After a lot of analysis, I think the rapid fire issue is a design flaw. If you work the action slowly on an RDB, you will find that you can pull the trigger while the action is out of battery and the hammer will follow the action home. Depending on the gas adjustment, recoil, and trigger pressure, it seems this occasionally results in a bump or slam fire scenario. It seems to be more of an issue on mine after it heats up. I think the solution is adjusting the gas system to JUST operate while cold.

I just bought one and the only problem I'm having is light primer strikes using brass too every couple of rounds. I don't think it's the hammer spring because that's a pretty strong spring on it. So I suspect the firing pin is out of spec so I ordered a new Firing pin from Kel tec. Hopefully that will resolve my issue. If you got any idea I'd appreciate it. Update: so it definitely was the firing pin. And I fixed it by getting a replacement from Kel tec for Like 10$. Now it's running everything and steel case.

Have the defender and as soon as I get a bit more ammo ill push through and report back but that is not a common issue with these. In fact there have been no big issues with them and I did my homework before my purchase. Probably a fluke. But hey, at least you got to experience burst from it😆

I think the issue was something with the early generations of the rifle. After 7 years or so of being released I would hope they had worked out the kinks and issues. I would assume like any product that is released it has issues that the producer didn’t come across until it is released to the public.

In later videos I have sent it back to be repaired. Keltec did well in backing up their product. When I had issues they paid for all shipping and repair. They basically sent me a new rifle and I haven’t had any issues since. The newest iteration may not be plagued with issues like the first generation. When you are creating something that isn’t basically the same as everything else on the market, you’re going to have some hiccups along the way.

You bump fired it on a bad mag. That’s why that happened. Adjust the gas system and don’t use hexmags. Pmags are tight but work great

One would think, but I could never duplicate the problem. I eventually sent it back a few times. Keltec eventually put all new parts into the rifle free of charge and I haven’t had an issue since. Pmags are for sure better than the hexmags.

More than likely it was either the hex mag or the ammo. You would have to run two different brands of ammo same mag to narrow it down.

Saw nutfancy vid that said do not run lacquer finish ammo as the lacquer melts and gums up the chamber in the RDB.

I would agree on that point although I only shoot straight brass. The lacquer wouldn’t cause this issue. This is due to some sort of safety catch in the trigger not stopping the hammer. From following the bolt home. Above my pay grade. I hope KelTec will pull through this time and fix the issue.

Love the concept of the bullpup. Full range but super small package. Got this before biden took office, sort of a panic buy, hate that if there is a doublefeed you have to take the gun apart to get it at. That being said i have a thousand rounds or so thru it and haven't had the issue once.

Get an angled grip , the venting gas will burn your hand easy from any muzzle device if your hand is to close . Experienced with this .

Still seems like you're monitoring the comments so I'll give you my advice. It might seem obvious but if you change ammo, change the gas setting, I've found a good spot on mine where it eats both 55 gr and 62 gr nicely. I also exclusively use Surefeed mags, specifically the ones with the blue follower, I don't know what was happening but my gun didn't like the pmag it came with or c products mags.

I recently got it back for the third time with a full rebuild( basically an entirely new rifle) and haven’t had an issue yet, granted I haven’t taken it out much. I will be continuing to monitor this in case it become more of an issue but so far, fingers crossed, the problem has been mitigated. Thanks for the comment!

I'm having this EXACT issue. I sent it to Kel-Tec once and when it got back it ran good for a little bit but started having double fires again. It's not consistent however. Some days I won't have any and other days ill have two double fires within 10 rounds. I believe you have said your issue has been resolved. Have you had anymore issues with double fires? If not, what exactly did you or Kel-Tec do?

I sent it back 3 times I think and they finally sent me a new rifle under the top cap where the serial number is. I haven’t had issues yet but I haven’t put a lot through since, maybe 200 rounds. I’m not 100% sure on this but I think the older models Had this issue.

not through the 500 round on mine... i turned the gas all the way down to try it but had failures to eject turned up the gas again then perfect... love mine so far but not shooting here lately because I cant find ammo... my ar had problems with those hex mags a while back they're junk

At the moment it is in the mail back to them for the third time. Once I get it back I’ll try and run 500 rounds through it before posting again. I haven’t had any other issues with the rifle other than that. It’s a fun rifle over all, just needs some work. I haven’t heard a lot about this issue so hopefully it’s just a fluke.

I recently got the rifle back with a full rebuild from KelTec. It’s been in the negatives where I live for the past week so I haven’t had a chance to get out. Hopefully the issue is fixed. Time will tell.
