Sounds like powered Kemper through a guitar cab is the way to go!! I've been wondering this for ever.

Been doing that for years. Sounds fine. Add in a real dirt pedal if you want or whatever your choice is for sound and feel just to enhance it.

This is not a good test. You would hear the same difference here with a tube amp going into different cabs. The cab makes pretty much just as much difference as the head (comparing amps in the same world at least. Not saying a VOX and 5150 sound the same), so obviously they're going to sound very different using an IR of a different cab/mic combination.

Nice demo but this comparison makes no sense. Kemper could do exactly the same tone if the profile was made from the SAME cab/mic. Even if it was the same cab/mic/speaker, the profile seems to have a different mic position.

This is in fact true. Have done it half a dozen times with friends to show them. They aren't shooting the impulse here. Honestly, I think the emulated sound sounds better (like someone took more time to set up the mics) in a mix. The real cab sound is better for people who play with themselves in their bedroom ;)

Wow, I wasn’t expecting to hear such an obvious difference, the cab has a much richer low end and sounds far more natural (at least to my ears)

Mic placement. Normally I like GAK--but today they neglected to tell everyone they didn't shoot the profiles with the same mic setup. This makes a MASSIVE difference in the direct out/cab-out comparison. Having done this myself, making the profile, then a/b ing back and forth between the cab and the amp in a controlled environment--guess what, difference is WAY more minor. You'd be hard pressed to tell there was a difference in fact.

@@gdhi11 This. Exactly what happened. Knew it as soon as I heard it. Good call. You can go into the Kemper later and "move" the mic around virtually to help this....but in the end, its all only as good as the original profile.

I believe that cabinet your using is the orange PPC 212V vertical cab with neo creambacks not vintage 30s. I recognize the cab because I own one and it’s a fabulous cabinet. The mic’d cabinet sounds best for me thanks for the video.

Thanks for the time and effort putting this together. The Kemper sounds awesome, but some of the heavily-processed cab signals came across as *noise*, that's just my own opinion. The choice of cabinet and speaker type is vital, that's why FR-FR speakers exist..It was an interesting experiment, I really enjoyed it. Thanks guys 👍

There's 'more' in the kpa direct .. It allows you to subtract to fit in the mix instead of adding which increases noise

Alpha wolf uses directly into Mesa 4x12 & use the kemper. I’m pretty sure the 600w power rack. That’s what i have currently it’s really cool that they have a built in power amp inside of the 6w ones! Much worth it in my opinion. Still learning how to use mine but just wow!

Use a di kemper profile. when you use a regular studio profile and turn the cab emulation off it will sound different. the di profile isn’t colored by the cab algorithm like the studio profiles are. If you have a di profile of a head and add a cab sim of the same cab you are using they will sound spot on

Yes that’s how I do it. No computer no interface. Just a real pedal like distortion, overdrive or fuzz to help it out a bit. Depending on what you like. I just use a regular 1x12 guitar cabinet. And yes powered kemper.

I'm sorry but when you've engineered your own records and songs for years and recorded guitar tones through mic'd amps, these cab sims are just trash in comparison. I've tried half a dozen units and they all sound muffled and muddy. The definition and natural flavor is gone. Kemper is a fine modeler but falls to the same fate as all the other sims. Run it through a 4x12 and mic it in a closet, you're golden.

@@GakCoUk Both tones are usable (with real cab and merged in profile) and there are no worse or better, it's subjective, but still if it was mostly for the comparison sake to find differences between the two, it shouldn't be done this way. Most profiles are made with at least 2 mics to make them more versatile and flexible enough for later tone shaping, but you only used single SM57. And there are no 2 identical mics, speakers and cabs, they all sound a bit different, even the same models, so if there were already so many inconsistences initially, you can't use the same Kemper settings in both cases, it should be compensated in some way or another. Also I'm quite interested if you disabled Pure Cabinet option in Kemper, cause it sounds to me like you didn't and if so, this comparison is even more pointless. Let me correct myself, this video proves that different setups with different settings sound different.
