I am German and only in my late 40es. However, listening to Ken Clarke I feel nostalgia for the "good old times" of leaders and politicians such as him. Margaret Thatcher was no particular friend of Germany and her policies would always be considered to market-friendly in my country. However, there is no doubt about the enormous respect she was met with, due to her seriousness and her honest diplomacy. No comparison whatsoever with the British Conservative Party today, not even close.

Johnson, May and Truss were all remainers on Europe but as soon as they saw a chance of becoming PM they abandoned everything they previously believed in. Can you imagine Ken Clarke reversing his position to become PM. The likes of Clarke and Heseltine whether you liked them or not at least stuck to what they believed in.

This was indeed a lovely interview..I'm not a tory voter but have always had a soft spot for "Genghis Ken" as one wag amusingly called him. I would just say that, empathetic though she was, the interviewer cannot be compared to "the others" : Laura Kuenssberg, Beth Rigby et al as this was more of a verbal memoir rather than extracting answers and explanations on the terrible state of things today from front benchers on both sides, where they have to be far more pushy and hard-nosed to satisfy the viewers.

@@alastairharris1866 I think you're right there, although they are hampered by the same problems that MPs face in the commons and PMQs every Wednesday: senior ministers and the PM are primed with rehearsed statements on any possible topic that have been carefully crafted to give nothing and largely consist of rhetoric. This in turn is down to the fact that they know that everything they say will be forensically analysed and compared to previous statements from themselves or colleagues on that issue. Any deviation from the original line will be jumped upon. The earlier generations of interviewers [David Frost, Brian Walden] had to do the hard yards of research to catch them out..nowadays social media and the internet generally makes the monitoring and comparison of speeches much easier.

I like the way this lady interviews politicians, she actually let’s them speak! It’s a conversation. You get a lot more out of listening to a conversation than the usual main stream media barrage and ‘talking over’ the person they’re interviewing. Ken Clarke comes across to me as one of those rare politicians who only ever did what he believed to be right for the country, rather than what was right for his career! If you agreed with him, or not, at least he’s clear about what he thinks and why. It’s a shame more of them aren’t more like that.

@@ktkee7161 Dotage is too strong a word.Kern can still speak rationally and with sense even if one sometimes disagrees . Retirement would be a more suitable word. But the point is that Ken Clarke is no longer making policy or in the government . This interview was not required to be challenging. or aggressive. It was, as another contributor says, a kind of memoir . But we do need interviewers to ask really challenging questions and also to follow them up when talking to a minister currently in office.

So 'Popularism [sic] is bad'. "Populism refers to a range of political stances that emphasize the idea of "the people" and often juxtapose this group against "the elite". It is frequently associated with anti-establishment and anti-political sentiment." Basically, the people, i.e. the majority, is wrong and politicians are right. We should just roll over and let these Westminster career politicians rule the country? NO. They are supposed to be our representatives, they are supposed to serve as the population's voice and speak for US in parliament. If we vote to leave the EU, that is what they should be championing in the HOC. We need to rid ourselves of these 'holier than thou' muppets who think they know better. They don't.

In fairness, Boris was insulting the electorate every time he told ridiculous lies. Also in fairness, Rishi (and every other minister) defended Boris day in day out ever since he came to office. In the end, Boris fell because he was a liability to the (parliamentary) party and Rishi (and a few others) showed some initiative in kicking off the process.

They thought they had it in tha bag. Surely, everyone would vote for the bright one? However, the electors listened to what they both said and Truss was saying all the right things and once in office she chose the right people to carry out what she proposed. At that point the powers that be panicked. She had to go and their first choice had to be installed. Sod the electors! They just confirmed that we no longer live in a democracy.

@@tom5216 Absolute rubbish. It is the best thing this country ever did. After Brexit on January 1st, almost immediately we had the covid pandemic. Just getting over that and Russia went to war with Ukraine. We have hardly had any breathing space. Add to that the fact that we now have globalist remainers in charge of our government at the moment. This country has succeeded in obtaining many trade deals around the world since Brexit. The energy crisis showed us just how stupid it is to rely on other countries and we have been able to secure supplies from other parts of the world because we are free to do so since Brexit , although extremely expensive. Successive governments over the years in Britain have made terrible mistakes mainly not making ourselves energy independent. This of course is because of the obsession with net zero. Added to this the government since Brexit have not begun to take advantage of the opportunities we now have. This is not a Conservative government they are socialists and the sooner we get some capable people elected the better. Eventually we will reall reap the benefits of independence. Roll on the next election. There is nothing good to be said for the EU.
