Ken Shamrock on Dan "The Beast" Severn
UFC Hall of Famer, former UFC Champion and former WWE Superstar Ken Shamrock talks about his 2 UFC fights vs "UFC Hall of Famer" and former WWE & GNW star Dan "The Beast" Severn.. Shamrock also discusses why there is still hard feelings between the two competitors stemming from the cancellation of their scheduled "rubber match" that was supposed to be part of the ill fated "UR Fight" PPV last year that Severn was going to come out of MMA retirement for however Ken couldn't fight due to a suspension.

I love both guys. Ken was my original mma hero. I came to appreciate Dan much later, if you hear how little Dan prepared for actual mma it's so impressive. He of course trained for years as a Greco Roman wrestler but still his achievements are very impressive. I love both guys.

Neither Dan nor Ken deserve to be shit on. They're both legends. The dance in Detroit was a disaster, and Ken should have gotten out of the game ten years before he did, but there's no erasing the achievements of both athletes.

ThunderousWrath Ken kind of deserves to be shit on for being such a sore looser, he has never lost a fight in his mind. He has a handful of excuses for every fight he has lost and blames everyone but himself. Kinda strips any credibility he may have had right the fuck away.

baggedwrxwagon So you're saying UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock lacks credibility as a fighter? A lot of people remember him being better than he was, but still... It's Ken fucking Shamrock. It's not exactly like he's the only fighter out there who makes excuses... or who people make excuses for...

ThunderousWrath yeah, and many, many professionals in the industry agree with me. Was he a pioneer? Sure as shit. Is he a sore looser who thinks he can't lose a fight fair and square? Yes indeed. Has he burned bridges and shit on one of the organizations that catapulted him into mainstream fame? Absolutely.

Anybody that watched the UFC back then knows and even remembers hearing John McCarthy prompting the fighters not to do this or that, loosely because of the ambiguity of the rules that were in place at that time. Fighters like Ken Shamrock are pioneers of this sport and anyone that benefits from it to this day owe these men great respect and gratitude.

He does have a fair argument against Severn for their 2nd match. Gracie was by far a superior fighter and he should admit that. I am not sure which fight it was that I saw on PPV back in the day but Gracie completely dominated him through the entire fight and Shamrock should not have been in the octagon with him. From start to finish Gracie controlled the fight and it wasn't even close. Shamrock deserved credit for never backing down but he has to admit there were times when he was clearly outmatched and handily beaten.

He's right about the first fight, he was great that night. But his excuses on the second one are BS. Everyone competes hurt, everyone fought by the same rules that night. Ken couldn't get to Dan, and Dan outboxed him and won. Sure it was boring, but Dan beat him, end of story. Also, if you watch interviews with Dan, he remains classy about this, and says almost nothing bad about Ken, or any other opponent. As Don Frye once said, if everyone fought clean, Dan Severn would have beaten everybody.

When Ken could shoot (before his body fell apart), he was freaking unbelievable. One of the best submission fighters ever. Same thing happened to his brother, though. Knees go, back goes, can't shoot. End of career essentially. Frank had to just become a brawler at the end and won a few because his kickboxing is pretty good. Ken didn't have as good stand-up skills so he became a bit of a joke. But in his early years, he was a monster.

This is all true. It's one of the reasons why seeing Tito Ortiz talk the smack he did kinda rubbed me wrong. If Ken still had the ability to shoot like he did at Tito's age those fights would've been very short and with roles reversed. Then again, Ken's ego and excuse making are just as bad.

The roids helped, when he was in his prime. Not saying others weren't also "enhanced" in the 90s but Ken took it all the way. Probably also broke his body down prematurely too, but when everything was working he was terrifying.

@@rondog540 Agreed. At the end of his career you could tell his body just wasn't working the way it did. Those fights with Tito Ortiz were painful to watch knowing that Ken in proper form would have absolutely dominated those fights, but he was instead dominated himself.

@shawnvineyard5055 you can take the best version of Frank vs the best version of Ken. Put them in the cage- old UFC rules and there is no chance Frank wins that fight. Ken would maul him at will in the Lions Den, literally beat the f*** out of Frank as and how he wanted.

I really don’t know what to think about this. Ken has actually went out there and put it all on the line many times with the toughest opponents. He’s had a group home. Has a lot of achievements. But then like others have said, he was juicing. Bottom line is it’s a shame that some of the founding fighters like Ken didn’t get the compensation they deserved and no company retirement plan. @@JM1993951 not so sure he would of demolished tank in Tanks prime. Look how tank trashed Taktarov although he still lost. Shamrock did a draw with Taktarov. Close call Tank has a chance. If Tank loses Ken is still going to the hospital after like Taktarov did. Severn Barely did a dente to Tank.

Love how he failed to mentioned that Dan had a 7 day tour in NWA before the fight that Severn lost because he always did WWE style pro-wrestling while at the same time did MMA and still had an amazing MMA record. Ken almost got killed by the Nasty Boys in a hotel room and Vader almost took his head off.... Shamrock is one of the greats in MMA but full of shit with himself.

I can understand being mad at somebody for doing HGH or steroids to win in competative environments. But given that wrestling is 90% politics and 10% spectacle I don't understand how anybody would care if Shamrock was done up to the gills on the stuff during his time pro-wrestling. It's your health and you can do whatever you want with it.

Ken was often made to be the villain, but he was one of the Pioneers of modern MMA, a muscled up athletic fighter with a stand-up, clinch and ground game! And he was A class act, if you watch that Gracie vs Shamrock fight, Ken gets caught in that school yard choke and he tapped, and the referee didnt see and Gracie in amateur fashion lets go the referee, seemingly has no idea what just happened and why they separated. Gracie says "you know you tapped." And Ken says you're right. I don't think Royce would've admitted to tapping, IMO it shows Kens real character.
