Jaffna, North Sri Lanka - I stumbled upon a Hindu festival and the experience was quite interesting
1st Impressions of Jaffna ➡ • First Time In North Sr...
A bit outside of Jaffna I stumbled upon a Hindu festival. We were driving by and saw many people there, so we decided to have a look. Many friendly locals invited Mafas and me inside, offered to explain whats going on and were very welcoming. A very interesting, but also overwhelming experience for me, which I really enjoyed! It was my first time at a Hindu festival.

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently in Sri Lanka, making Sri Lanka travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Sri Lanka. I will be traveling Sri Lanka, showing you around local places and try lots of different Sri Lankan food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Sri Lanka now from a more authentic local point of view.

It's hard to imagine how painful they are, they must be very religious; After watching it, it reminds me of human meat skewers, which is a bit scary, thank you for sharing!😄🙏 很難想像他們有多痛,他們一定是很虔誠的; 看完讓人想到人肉串,有點可怕,謝謝分享!

It’s extremely painful but they do it willingly. The Hindus pray/wish for something almost impossibly good to happen to them (cure a fatal illness maybe ) and when it does, they choose to involve in an extreme and usually painful act to repay the kindness and effort god took on them. They believe these to be humbling.

Wow, it's indeed the coolest experience for you, Ken, to witness that Hindu festival. It's similar to "Thaipusam" which is celebrated annually by the Hindus in Malaysia. The devotees carry different types of "kavadi" or carry a pot of milk and some pierce their skin, tongue or cheek with vel skewers. They do that to fulfill their vows/pledges and to offer thanks to Lord Murugan. In Malaysia, the big event/ procession begins at the oldest Hindu temple in KL and ends in Batu Caves. Can you still remember Batu Caves? Great watch and thanks for sharing, Ken 👍👏

Very facinating festival and those attending the fesival are very friendly to explain on the festival. Looks quite similar to another Hindu festival involving carrying of kavadis and piercing of body in Malaysia, but that is a different festival called Thaipusam that is held annually either in January or sometimes in February. You mentioned this festival is for the elephant God, not sure whether it is a festival for Lord Ganesha (Hindu's elephant God). The festival in Malaysia, Thaipusam is for Lord Murugan. You can witness Thaipusam in Malaysia if you visit Malaysia in the beginning of the year (end January or mid February), it is celebrated in very grand scale in Penang and KL (Batu Caves). However the Thaipusam festival/procession was disallowed in Malaysia during the pandemic in 2021 and 2022. The kavadi carriers are under trance and did not feel the pain when their body is pierced.

@7:46 when I was kid I used to go to this festival just for the music they play and I usually stood near the drummers 😀. They will increase the speed of the music/ rhythm slowly and finish at maximum speed that the dancers and they themselves can manage. It’s very interesting 😂. And that tractor you noticed in front with decorations also carries one man hanging by the hooks 🪝 on the back and leg. I hope you witnessed that too. I’ve asked those who had done the hooks 🪝 before, they said it’s only painful when hooking and removing it. No pain in between.

6:33 It's not just young boys. Even ladies regardless age gender do it. They(Hindus) make a wish and pray if that happens they would make this type of pain prayer/ sacrifice. They make this sacrifice/prayer with nails in the body when their wishes come true. Some people do out of devotion to God without material wishes. One that you find is Jaffna "Saivam" (one of the major branch of Hinduism) which considers Lord Shiva is prime God and they accepts all different Gods, deities, demi gods, planets, Sun, Moon, etc Hinduism is a lifestyle. Different Hindus do different things. Vegetarians, Non-vegetarians, Different Gods, different rituals, etc. There is no hard fast rules and no conversion to Hinduism like Abrahamic religions. Even Hindus can be agnostic and athethist too.

They go into a trance and do not feel any pain. Piercing is to honor the god who has answered their prayers/vow in the past or to fulfill a vow for the future. Like a pilgrimage, do something special to please the god. In Malaysia, men carry kavadis (mobile shrines), ladies carry pots of milk on their heads and go up the 200+ steps up to the cave temple. You can see KZbin videos of this as many travelers have captured the celebrations.

In Malaysia the celebrations are much bigger in Penang Island and also at Batu Caves but due to Covid situation, they have stop that for 2 years. That is during Thaipusam festival where they carry huge kavadis with more hooks and longer spikes on the cheek, sometimes the spike can be as long as a metre long.

This kind of event is usually the beginning of a procession between one movie and another, and the people who have been pierced are undertaking a vow or purification as part of their Hindu practice, to bring more auspicious circumstances or to release from a previous inauspicious event. Where there are ropes or cords attached they will be used to suspended the person from the piercings. These can not just be found in Jaffna but elsewhere where there are large Hindu communities. I have no idea about the present, but in the past there were huge events in Colombo too, with many thousands of people visiting the kovils and people of all kinds being welcomed inside and a great deal of vendors also selling many different wares. In Colombo it was called Vel and happened a couple of times a year, sometimes the route was several miles, and the people doing penance were carried professionally on huge decorated floats. A bit like the penitents festivals of Southern Europe, but with a lot more noise and colour, and as you saw elephants too. Thanks for this interesting video that was very evocative for me, because when I first experienced them they were completely new to me too, though they were much more crowded than this one. I wonder whether the huge ones still exist, they really were something to remember, and marvel about, that people submitted to this and survived it too.

Hallo Ken!!
