There are so many "experts" out there about diets in general, and the ketogenic diet specifically, that I thought a video was in order. Who can benefit from the ketogenic diet? You might be surprised.
Chronic diseases characterized by inflammation, insulin resistance, and immune system disorder respond beautifully to keto. If you have a disease like this and have been told you should not eat keto, then this video is for you.
The diet you eat matters, whether you think about it, or just eat whatever. Long-term suffering is in the future if your feed your body the wrong diet.

Caro girl, congrats on your choice of going KETO. My wife Tiffany and I started KETO on February 6, of this year. So far I have lost 72 pounds and Tiff has lost 38. We have both decreased our blood sugar to the point of (with Dr.'s approval) eliminating our 5 daily shots of two types of insulin. Along with that Tiff is going to start cutting her Metformin dose in half tomorrow. We feel so much better and plan to live KETO the rest of our now longer and better lives.

Dang! I thought Dr. Berry was saying "Who can benefit from eating the Cheeto-diet." Then I turned on the subtitles. Guess I need to put this bag up and get with the programme! All kidding aside, I began this journey and it didn't take long to feel absolutely GREAT! Weight is coming off, sleeping better, wife says less snoring (marker is the dogs are still in the room when I wake up), having to sleep about 1-1 ½ hours less a night, OMAD with out being as they say, 'hangry,' Just this morning hit a weight marker I haven't seen in a long, long time. 67 yo and it's working. I even went out with some guys and had a glass of water while they Beer, Burgered & Fried themselves into a coma...wasn't hungry or longing in the least. Guess I was the designated Keto-Driver that night.

KenDBerryMD I have been keto for about 3 months and I'm down 34lbs. I'm still sitting around 278lbs, so obviously I have a long way to go. I am on 50mg of Losartan and 12.5mg of HCTZ. I actually tried to come off of my meds myself (bad I know) and yesterday a doctor visit for a stomach bug revealed my BP was 157/105. So I went back on the meds obviously. Today I'm dealing with dizziness and tiredness. I know that is common site effects to BP meds, but would my body adapt quicker to it this time, being on it before? I have been off of it about month or so. I'd love to be off of them for good but apparently now isn't the time. I'm having a hard time with this, because of the stomach bug, I've been taking in Ketorade as well. Am I running the risk of raising or lowering my potassium levels taking in Ketorade and being on Losartan and HCTZ.

It has helped me tremendously my symptoms are osteoarthritis, pcos, graves disease hyperthyroidism... Thank you Dr. Berry for your KZbin channel! My mind is more alert, darn near pain free and I just plain feel better than I have in years. Weight loss is a bonus and is working despite being on methimazole (which slows down everything) in fact my medications have decreased not only in quantity but in dosage as well. I was told I would benefit from rai or a thyroidectomy now they believe I'm on the road to remission with neither of them on the table right now. :) Thanks again! You're awesome!!

It’s interesting....I’ve begin to notice my left shoulder seems a bit better all on its own. And my knees??? They have totally quit bothering me! I’ve only lost about 20 pounds and have about 50 to go. But you are so right....Keto is one amazing plan! In fact, I find this way of eating almost strange! A wonderful strange! Haha

I don't know, how the condition is called, but low carb or keto diet can also help with that. Some people wake up in the night, because their blood sugar dropped and the cortisol got up to compensate that. With that, those people lose valuable hours of sleep, the melatonin couldn't do his job, they are groggy in the morning, have difficulty to concentrate. With time all of that can lead to some chronic diseases and debilitating symptoms like depression.

karen quick the macros Becoming Fantastic listed are perfect for Keto, the most important thing is to begin. Just eat fatty meats dark meat chicken (breast has too many carbs), pork chops with thick ribbons of fat, fatty ground beef, liver, eggs, etc. Keep your veggies above ground and as leafy as possible. Lots of kale, spinach, turnip greens but not the turnips, broccoli, cauliflower etc. Try to avoid potatoes, turnips, yams, carrots, rutebeggas and such; basically stick with low gi veg. Since you're just starting out I recommend also watching Dr Barry's video called 'doing the best you can is good enough'. There are lots of uninformed well-meaning people and a few keto snobs out there. Don't let them discourage you. I promise this is the answer you're looking for. I fought it for years and now living pain free and sleeping for the first time in years I KNOW keto is the only way to live. I'd wish you good luck but you don't need it, trust the path...it will get you there

Dr. Berry, hi i love your videos on youtube and watch all the time. Iam a type 2 diabetic and am doing keto. I have about 80 pounds to lose. However, my husband needs to lose no weight. He is 40,6’0 and about 175-180 pounds. He has IBS though and aches and pains.We asked our Dr if keto was ok for him too since im on it. It would be so simple to just be able to eat the same thing. She said no because he dont need to lose weight. That he ahould just eat a “balanced” diet like Mediterranean diet or something.She said the fats would bother his IBS and also that he should eat No raw veggies.and No leafy greens as she believes that will mess with his gut.We are so confused as we hear of others being helped with keto for IBS. I understand you cant give any direct advice to us but can you please give us your opinion

Very good for anyone to prevent any future health issues. You can eat this way for the rest of your life. After ONLY 2 months it went to 5.5!! My fastings are still 90-105 BUT my randoms are in the 70's. My A1C is still low, getting checked again in 2 weeks. A1C is best indicator of pre-diabetes. Worked lab for 40 years, that's the tool best indicator since it's the average glucose over 3 months. Hope this helps.

I'm Type II Diabetic (unfortunately still on insulin) and my blood sugars on Keto average about 110 (fluctuating between 105 and 115 with only the occasional dip into the upper 90s). However, when I'm fasting it is always higher. One time when I first started implementing IF I was fasting for 14 hours and it jumped up to 135. However, it always drops back down to my normal range after I eat. If I'm not mistaken, it is due to the fact that your body is utilizing the stored fat/glucose in your cells which will raise your blood glucose levels for a time. It's just something I'm learning not to worry about when I fast as that is still the fastest way to reduce insulin resistance. I've heard that the effect will go away in time anyway.

I’ve been doing this for a little over a month. I lost about 6 pounds strait off but have stopped now. My doctor is all for it. I have several medical conditions. I’m trying to believe but since the stall I’m getting nervous. I have never lost weight easily. But my BP and blood sugars are my biggest worry. My CRP is 8.9 argh! Any suggestions.

Apparently, it's common to stall between weeks 3 and 6 as your body is still learning how to fully use ketones properly. If you're really worried, maybe try to be extra diligent about counting your macros for about a week and see if there is something you've been missing. Or perhaps incorporate intermediate fasting for a time as that will sometimes jumpstart things. Otherwise, you may just have to ride out this slump. For those that stall, they say things tend to pick up again around 6-8 weeks. Don't give up. You'll get there! I have not quite reached a complete stall stage yet, even though I've always had trouble losing weight, but I know my weight loss slowed down significantly around week 3. Of course, I've seen so many benefits from this diet in just a month (blood sugar control, more energy, better sleep, fewer headaches, fewer RLS incidents, and less neuropathy pain), that I would never go back to the other way of eating even if I never lost another pound.

I've been struggling with the same thing. I've been Keto for nearly a month and it's great, but the weight loss has been a bit slower than most people experience because I'm still on Levemir (it's like Lantus). At least my blood sugars have become much more controlled since I started Keto. It's likely you will need to tell your doctor you plan to eat a low carb diet now so he/she can help you adjust your pills/insulin, especially as your glucose levels begin to normalize. If they have a problem with Keto, just say you're going on a Low-carb, whole-food diet. That tends to make the more closed-minded doctors a little more accepting, lol. I've also worried about putting my mother on the diet before discussing it with her doctor because he has her on three separate diabetic pills as well as Levemir and Novolog. I just worry he will not be accommodating since he just sends her to a diabetic nutritionist that tells her to eat 40g or less per meal. I mean... seriously? It's no wonder her numbers are out of control and she has to go in for cataract and cornea surgery in August.

Thanks for the response. I'm in the same boat with your mother as far 3 diabetic pills and 2 insulins. From everything I'm reading and Doctors I've chosen to watch videos on this subject the weight isn't going anywhere without the insulin and insulin inducing drugs being reduced drastically or totally gone all together. What I'm struggling to figure out is if I should just drop the insulin all together and see what happens and if all goes well reduce the pills.

Depending on how much you take, I would be nervous about that, because keeping the blood sugars low is still extremely important. If you do reduce insulin without a doctor monitoring you, you should probably do it slowly. Though the fast-acting insulin will likely become superfluous really fast, if not immediately. How much slow-acting you take now and how many carbs you tend to consume currently will play a big factor in determining how much it would be safe to reduce. Of course, I only have my own experience to go off of. I know that when I started Keto I was able to drive my blood glucose down from an average of 250 (with peaks around 350) to an average of 111 within two weeks, but it's at that level still taking the insulin. Granted, I do not take what is considered a "high" dose. I'm at 25 units. Despite taking it, I have still lost 14 pounds in the last 25 days. That might be lower than what my pre-diabetic husband lost in only two weeks, but it's still a loss, so it's not "impossible" to lose weight on insulin, just really damn hard. Though, it would likely be harder the more insulin you have to take. I have considering slowly reducing my insulin by 3-5 units at a time to see if my numbers will remain stable, but I'm nervous about it since my glucose levels are still a little higher than normal. I will likely wind up speaking to my doctor first. I don't know how much he will be able to help as he is not very knowledgeable about Keto, but we'll see.

I'm keeping carbs between 20 and 30 a day and zero sugar. I've been doing 140 on the Lantus and 40 after each meal on the Humalog. As you can see I take quite a lot diabetic meds. Based on your experience your weight lose looks pretty good. Maybe I need to look deeper into what I'm eating and if number of years using all these meds factors in as well.
@lauragilbert9326

I keep carbs under 20 and most of those are from veggies or the little bit you will find in an egg or cheese. I rarely even use sweeteners or processed sugar-free food substitutes. Oh and intermediate fasting whenever possible has helped me a lot too, but you definitely have to be careful with that on high insulin amounts. Personally, if I were taking the same insulin amounts you are and my numbers were not rising too high with the current carb intake, I'd start by not taking the Humalog and seeing if your numbers spike. Since you can always take that one easily if you find that you need it, it's an easier one to experiment with. If they remained stable over a 3-5 day period without it, then I would consider lowering the Lantus a little at a time while keeping a really close eye on those numbers. Of course, that's just what I would do. I'm no doctor, lol. However, if your numbers are still averaging higher than what's considered the normal range for a non-diabetic with what you're doing, you might have to give it a little more time for the glucose levels in your blood to normalize first, and perhaps even lower your carb intake further. Just keep in mind that certain no-carb foods and label ingredients can spike insulin levels without you even realizing it - like modified starch (can also be labeled as modified corn starch or modified food starch) and soybean oil (almost all standard store-bought mayos contain these ingredients even if it says it's Olive Oil or Avocado Oil Mayo). Dr. Berg did a video about this once, and I would not be surprised if Dr. Berry has mentioned it before either. I wish you luck with this! I know it's a pain, but we'll both get there in time. :D

Doing keto 4+ weeks, losing weight, love the good feels, no depression, etc..., but I'm looking like an pregnant woman ( and I'm a 29 yrs male ) if I eat fat ( any kind of fat ). Example : 1 piece salmond or half of avocado bloating me about 5-7 hour, can not eat and feeling ultimate bloated. I eat only healty fats. Plus after a fatty meal next day I have an inflammation on my butt. I tried to figure out myself, I read a lot, there was a group of people who said : I take too much fiber ( 30-35g/day) then I dropped, but not helped me ! I trried everything ( pre &probiotics, digest enzymes ) not helped. Please can you help me and figure out why is this "effect ? " No one cant helped me ! I stopped eating Carbohydrates. My diet is as Zero Carbs as possible. I am essentially a carnivore. Very high fat, moderate protein, extremely low carbohydrates. I only use heavy and Spring and Summer butter cream from pastured cows. During the periods of rapid grass growth I purchase lots of heavy cream from local organic dairies. I culture the cream and make butter to freeze. At least 20 lbs. of butter. I also culture my own cream cheese and sour cream. Just heavy cream in my cream cheese no other additives except Himalayan pink salt. During the late Fall and throughout the winter I use locally produced fresh organic heavy cream from hay fed cows. The cows are never fed grains. Sorry for my digression. I eat very fatty meats, lots of eggs, and cheese. No vegetables ever.

As insulin resistance, vitamin deficiencies, and/or high cortisol levels are the most common culprits for that type of thing, Keto would likely help. The brain tends to function better on ketones than on glucose. I know I've had much less brain fog since I started the diet, especially since I sleep better and get fewer headaches.

Can keto be hard on the kidneys?
@lauragilbert9326
@lauragilbert9326 6 жыл бұрын
It's not any worse than sugar. The kidneys flush out the excess energy source in your urine, whether it be glucose or ketones. Once you become fully fat-adapted you won't crave to eat fat in excess since fat is so filling. Therefore, your body will utilize most of it, not flush it out. However, when you use glucose for energy, you have a tendency to crave more, especially once you become insulin resistant. Then the kidneys are forced to flush that out. I had both an Aunt and an Uncle that had to go on dialysis because glucose killed their kidneys. Both died within a few years. Yes, too many ketones in the body once you become fat adapted can tax the kidneys, but it's much easier to overdo sugar than fat since fat fills you up more. However, in the end, too much of anything is bad. You just have to find the appropriate balance for your needs, no matter which one you're using for fuel.
