Great kendo video! For the 3rd question (10:07), I took their question to mean pulling their arms back *before* making the strike, not after, though that might be just me. I have a similar issue with my kendo that I am also trying to work through.

Hello, Sensei. Last week, I asked the question about pulling the shinai back. Sorry for not being clear. My doubt was about pulling back before the strike, not after hitting. I've been trying to improve this point for over a year, but despite consciously understanding what needs to be done, I can't seem to improve. Anyway, thank you for the great answer last time about pulling the shinai back after the hit :)

Not 100%, but I think if they're 8th Dan we should definitely call them Sensei. Pretty sure they deserve it! I got a chance to work with Kato-sensei for a very brief moment. Curious to know how often you've had a chance to work with 8th Dans yourself Andy, I've heard that it's rare even in Japan.

Hello Fisher Sensei! First of all, thank you for taking the time to do these kendo rants and for running my favorite place to shop for bogu. I am currently shodan and was able to be at a kodansha shinsa recently and watch parts of the 8th Dan tournament on KZbin. While watching the kodanshas' matches, it really drove home for me that I really don't understand seme and so I can't really understand what's going on between them. How should we lower ranked kendoka approach mitorigeiko with kendoka at the higest levels? What should we try to take away from it at this stage of our kendo journey? Any pointers you might have would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance for your time!

Was just talking half a dozen hours ago about the idea that we can overcome ego through kendo. My club insisted we justify our reasons for joining. This interesting idea was one of the reasons I gave for signing up to kendo.

I wondered a bit about how much kendo participation is decreasing in Japan. In the first village I lived in in Japan, kendo was the biggest JHS club (but they didn't have a ton of options), and a neighboring town I went to (to be able to practice more days a week) even had a ton of elementary school kids in it. But, 2 years ago I moved to a village that's actually bigger, and close to the prefecture capitol, and the JHS kendo club is now down to 1 member, and 2 kids in ES (one just quit recently). The difference seems to be that the JHS has considerably more clubs, and the ES kids have close access to a ton of other extracurricular activities here (considerably more kids in shorinji kempo and karate, judo has more than kendo too, but not a ton either). Kinda worried it may die off altogether here, it seems hard to rejuvenate interest (even getting to see *me* more, isn't enough, apparently, haha) when none of their friends are doing it, and it can be a big ask for kids telling them it might be 6 months before they can even put on bogu and hit each other....

Hi Andy, hope you're having a good week. I'm competing in a taikai this weekend, and I've lost most of my voice - I work as a lecturer so not talking isn't really an option, and I'm now wondering if it's going to be possible to score ippon without kiai! How should we adjust when we aren't able to use our voice? Thanks again to you and the youtube robots for telling everyone about these brilliant kendo videos :)
