25:30 that type of thinking, good and evil being either this or that, imho, isn’t theologically sound. Isaiah 14 contextualizes the entire song for me. Without context people interpret it as the fall of Lucifer but the passage is actually a critique of the kingdom of Babylon aka the Institutions that manipulate the masses. Dot isn’t just critiquing himself I believe he’s contextualizing his role in the industry and how it relates to his spiritual journey

I have no opposing words of what you said Rob. I focus more like to focus more on the story of the person than to try and figure out who it is. One thing I do want to do is appreciate Kendrick and his Teacher when he was young. It's one thing to listen, but when we go over Kendrick's lyircs, I don't see a song, I see poetry. That 3rd verse when he was talking to god was crazy. A Master Wordsmith...

I don’t think this song was about Kendrick past lives at all. I think in the first half he was using the past life regression line to setup the story basically telling us theme of the story. This whole story is about Lucifer though. He recreating a new story for Lucifer. He wants us to imagine if Lucifer was reincarnated through different people in the past , musically gifted people because that’s what Lucifer was (son of the morning) in heaven. The gentleman with the guitar, the woman who abuse drugs these are all Lucifer. I believe these are all fictional characters dot is using in his story too. It’s to show at those times and moments that Lucifer was still struggling with sin. Now imagine himself reincarnated into Kendrick Lamar and now Lucifer see all the mistakes he made in the past and he wants to change he wants to do right, not counting how many times and life’s he been trying to correct his wrongs but now that he is in Kendrick he is really trying to prove that he is sorry and wants forgiveness from god. That’s why he is having the back and forth with god. That’s what I took from the song I could be wrong.

Great perspective, Rob. I thought I had the song figured out now I’m confused all over again lol. Cause I think he only re-wrote the Devils story to end the satanic hold the Devil has on musicians. I think that 3rd verse was really solely about Dot. Even the fell out of heaven part could be akin to Kendrick being born again as this current version of himself. I don’t think the Devil is seeking redemption but rather Kendrick is now free of the satanic hold he fell victim to in verse 1 & 2

@Thoughtitwasadrought7 күн бұрын
Amazing perspective. I take the concept of this song as Kendrick’s attempt to redeem the artist. Which is a common theme in his art especially from to pimp a butterfly. I don’t believe in reincarnation but I do understand that in this song reincarnation is a metaphor for redemption. The last verse is basically Kendrick’s way of saying that no human is too evil for redemption using Lucifer as a stand in for the most egotistical and lost artists. This song is probably Kendrick’s deepest song to date
@Sheija7 күн бұрын
To your point about the connection to the song ‘Pride’, it’s interesting that this song explores some of the other Deadly Sins (Gluttony, Lust) which lead to a Fall, as well as the actual Biblical Fall of Lucifer. As they say, Pride comes before the Fall. Which also speaks to the idea that Pride is the greatest sin because it can lead to all the other sins. In the context of this song, Lucifer/Dot’s original Pride led to the Fall and the cycle of sin, death and reincarnation he narrates on this track.

Thank you for this breakdown and key points to pay attention to! Past life regression is the key thing to pay attention to in the beginning. When I first heard this and him speaking in first person telling the stories of 2 people I instantly knew this man has tapped into his Akashic Records! “Body after body, lesson after lesson” in the first verse, then in the 3rd verse telling us how he learned from those same lessons in this life as Kendrick Lamar speaking to “God”! You are right that he was not telling story of certain artists; those were HIS past lives and parallel fallings, and lessons in his reincarnations. Still having that connection to music as well. ✨

Also, as a person who just loves all types of music, Dot may not have had any particular black musician in mind, but I would love to see how much "John Lee Hooker" Billie Holiday" and other possible musicians names spiked in google searches the week Kendrick put the album out. i believe that reincarnated is the ultimate progression of everything Kendrick has talked about throughout his career. he's spent a lot of lyrical space in his career struggling with the ideas of pride, figuring out where to place the blame for bad actions, and how to cope with having influence. Mr. Morale felt like a person realizing that it's all on them to decide not only who they WANT to be, but also who they are in real life. Realizing that all of the struggle figuring out where to place the blame is wasted time. because yes, there are causes and effects, and genuine discussion of those topics are important in order to heal, BUT it's on each individual to pick up the pen and start writing their own story instead of just being a long for the ride. This song, to me, is a declarative statement to say look, I figured all this out and am now ready to simply live as correctly as I can.
@enterthejaa7 күн бұрын
Great breakdown as always! This is easily my favorite song from the album. To your question about can the devil be redeemed, I think that depends on the individual. In the context of the song, imo Kendrick is saying that the devil is in all of us, tempting us with evil and harmful things but it is solely up to the individual to not be tempted and to live a good life. The devil’s story who has been reincarnated many times, has been redeemed because of how Kendrick chooses to live his life but that redemption is not always the case depending on the individual. The beauty of the song is that he tells us that it’s possible to rewrite the devil’s story for ourselves but that’s ultimately up to the individual to choose to live a better life. The reality is, not all will.

@ChangeThatBeatyo7 күн бұрын
I’m only halfway through the video so maybe you touch on it later, but an important distinction about this song is that there isn’t any perspective shifts in my interpretation. The song is through the present day perspective of Lucifer’s soul throughout the entire song, (reflecting on the past in the first two verses) a soul that is currently in Kendrick Lamar, but not necessarily speaking as Kendrick Lamar. “I got this fire burning in me from within…. I was head of rhythm and blues…. Another life had placed me as a black woman…. I died with syringes pinched in me…. My present life is Kendrick Lamar…” Every use of “Me, My, Myself, I” is from the soul/perspective of Lucifer. Excluding the last line, which is from Kendrick’s “fleshly body.” A very minor distinction but an important one for listeners to understand the song isn’t in 3rd person, or switching perspectives throughout. In my opinion. 🙂

That part. IMHO people need to read more and listen to a more diverse palette of music or even just Hip Hop. I'm not a huge fan of Kendrick but I like some of his music and I think he has skills. The song ‘Made N****s’ is a play on the term Made Men in the Italian mafia, which is basically a fully initiated member (you have to be sponsored by another made man and swear a blood oath). The oath varies, but a common example is: “As burns this saint, so will burn my soul. I enter alive and I will have to get out dead.” No coincidence that Dot starts this song rapping “I got this fire burning in me from within”. It’s like him and the other fallen angels/reincarnated musicians are all the Made 🥷🏿s of heaven/hell. And the song ends with him swearing a new oath to God. Another dope aspect is that Lucifer is looked at as a prince, the leader of the Fallen angels. Made N****s is from Pac’s Makaveli era where he was leading the Outlaws, which is a parallel of Lucifer and his outlaw angels. Also the real Machiavelli is most famous for writing ‘The Prince’ and was from Florence, which brings it full circle to the Italian mafia connection. Love this breakdown G!

Hey Rob if you ever have the time and just want to explore an alternative interpretation of the song, I suggest this breakdown by a youtuber named The Carla Nelson Show...she's a poet and devout Christian and I think out of all the breakdowns of this song, hers is the best. I won't spoil everything she breaks down, but to her, the very beginning of the song is the devil because of the bible references in the first few lines, not Kendrick. Also, a major theme is the relationship the devil has with their father in each life/body he lives in. But she really does a great job of explaining the poetry in Kendrick's words and bible references Great breakdown though! I love each of them and CANNOT wait for your Gloria breakdown! 🔥

Reincarnated is definitely one of the best off the new album. It's an example of true art as made evident by the discussion it creates. The devil being incarnated as a famous musician then reincarnated over and over is such a clever way to address the duality in himself. At the end it's almost a claim of him also being Jesus reincarnated too right? Because belief in Jesus is what redeems and removes the power of sin. Note, I am not deep into religion either. That's just how I interpreted it. Another thing about the song that I think is dope is that it displays Kendrick's ability to mimic other rappers' deliveries almost flawlessly. He did the same thing on The Heart Part 5 when he was rapping as Nipsey.

I grew up in Christianity and I’ve asked about Lucifer’s redemption since a teenager. When reading about Yeshua (Jesus) when he dies on the cross he goes to hell to give the good word and helps souls in hell. I’ve always had this feeling that Yeshua went to hell to redeem Lucifer as well to extend grace and mercy. The church fight me on that, but if God is in Unconditional Love, wouldn’t that same love have to extend to Lucifer as well? In 2015 I wrote in my journal a Lucifer redemption story. And there’s a show call Lucifer that I think everyone should check out. People have been programmed to only view Lucifer in a bad light and that’s not coo especially if this was God’s favorite Angel. Like you gotta question that.

When I listened to it, it seemed like he was past people that were musicians and because he didn’t learn the lesson he had to come back. Then when he described something or someone else…sounded like he was telling the story of Lucifer fall from heaven when he became jealous of something. Lucifer had a beautiful voice and was great with music etc. I’m paraphrasing but that’s what I got from the song…I’m going to listen your insight now.

Kendrick rewriting the devil's story feels like an extension of him trying to understand and offer a path to redemption to Kodak Black and everyone like him on Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.

I really enjoyed this breakdown and how Kendrick is able to show growth in his lyrics. I don't think you far off with your Pride theory.

In reference to the Drake beef, I don't think the "I'm ashamed that I ever created that enemy" is about him. I think the "But you love war... How can they forgive when there's no forgiveness in your heart?" is partially about Drake. The Dissect podcast had a great interpretation over this part of the song, where they mentioned how in this song Kendrick was kicked out his house/heaven by God but earned his way back home through rehabilitation, but since Kendrick sees himself as a vessel of God's word, this begs the question, does Kendrick believe he can chasten others in the way God chastened him in order to rehabilitate others? This calls back to the outro in 'FEAR.': "That man chastens his son, so the Lord, thy God, chasten thee So just like you'll chasten your own son He's gonna chasten you because He loves you So that's why we get chastised, that's why we're in the position we're in Until we come back to these laws, statutes and commandments And do what the Lord said, these curses is gonna be upon us" So I don't think he's ashamed or regrets any part of the beef, I think he believes in order for his actions to be justified, he needs to have a real intention to give others a chance to be forgiven empathetically if shown to be rehabilitated. The "I'm ashamed that I ever created that enemy" is more about the previous line about "no more putting these people in fear... you crushed a lot of people keeping their thoughts in captivity" whether it's relating to United In Grief's "be afraid." or any other song, I think he's saying he regrets putting people in fear that there's no hope of rehabilitation or forgiveness of their sin, instead of more positive messages from God to inspire, and bring understanding "The more light that I can capture" Just my thoughts, great video, love your breakdowns :)

I’m early(ish). His delivery in the first verse reminds me a bit of DMX as well. On an unrelated note, what is the biggest piece of advice you can give on fatherhood, @Rob Markman?

John Lee Hooker was a Blues musician and was never at the top of RnB. I say Jackie Wilson because he started out running the streets then shot up to the top of the charts but never put anybody on. His father was a preacher as well. I can also see your thought of it just being an archetype of a musician during those times. I don't know if you're going to do ”Hey Now” but wanted to know if you recognized Brother J's cadence when Kendrick said, "The Black know I strangled a GOAT".

I agree parallels. Their were hundreds of smaller town African American women all over the USA all had dreams of fame.

He’s talking about his past lives. That could be on this plane or another. If we are looking at this era we have to look at who died and past away before he was born in his present life in 1987. So if the first was famous in 1947, that life has to end before the birth of the new one in 1987.
