Korg Berlin is doing what they're doing because Korg Japan is giving Tatsuya Takahashi lots of breathing room. After he spearheaded the Volcas he needed a break and Korg let him transfer to Berlin to decompress and experiment at a slower pace. But at Superbooth Tats also said he doesn't have unlimited time to work on product, so this might be the last demo unit before something gets finalized for production.

Orange pop, whether it’s Crush, Hi-C, Fanta, Shasta, Sunkist, etceterah, etceterah, is the cocaine of sodas. I’m pretty sure the red dye number 4 (or whatever number it is) they put in it isn’t for colour, but to make people crazy. Jorb was still coherent here, so he’s either not finished it yet or has built up a tolerance from years if addiction.

the Love FM is such a brilliant approach to the (as you said) well known/documented issue with FM in general - it's inherently counterintuitive nature. Not to mention it just *looks* like something you'd see in the year 2024, utterly futuristic to breath-taking degrees (there's a "Take My Breath Away" DX7 joke in there somewhere). & yeah that Polybrute, I already know Carpenter Brut about to unload all sorts of heavy/spooky crazy on us with that thing, even the demo screamed "My names Carpenter 'French-dude' Brut & I love horror soundtracks". Be safe in Europe man! I hear they like to throw acid around those parts & I'm not talkin 303 basslines 👀🤣

Oh! The Arturia still has the touch strip. I couldn’t see it, so wasn’t sure if they integrated it into the wood or just replaced it with the polyphonic expression control. Nice to see the strip is still there. Even though I have no interest in a big analogue, I already have mine and I’m committed to it for life. That FM synthesiser is cool, but I wish it were 6-op! I love the custom algorithm creation being so direct and easy.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 6 ай бұрын
Normally i can see the point of 4op FM when it's a face programmable synthesizer not a preset one, just so you don't have an explosion in the number of Programs (Operator permutations) that get difficult to remember and make sense of. But these guys have figured out the wiring in an intuitive way. Perhaps there is another usability limit, like, that it becomes really tangled potentially? But by all reason you can have something like drag and drop sorting of Operators so you can untangle it somewhat. I can see the problem that well let's say you have two columns of Operators, each houses 3. Then if you run a connection from first to the last one in the column, it appears to run through the middle one which is not actually connected. Maybe the Operators need to be arranged like a hexagon, so the middle one is further out. Maybe you can just have a limitation that you can not connect from the first to the last, and odds are, you can still do just about all the usual things. You can still zigzag lace with the other column for those longer operator chains. Actually, looking at the DX7 Programs, there's 32 of them, i can't see even one which couldn't be done this way. Number 4 is tricky but it my mind, it works. But yeah 6op sound is just so massive if you let it, and 4op misses out on that, will always sound a little too much like a Megadrive but thinner, because that one had horrible analogue distortion which actually helps it along a little. More like Sharp X68000. Not that these sound bad, but like, it's nice to have the capability to go beyond that.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 6 ай бұрын
@@SianaGearz yeah, exactly re the Mega Drive. I like that sound, but there’s so many chiptune trackers etc which can do Mega Drive sound. 6op stuff by contrast feels more worthy of hardware to me. Re the interface postulating; I think if you drag across two operators and it would deceptively cross across, it could be programmed to run around the outside or something. To be honest I hadn’t realised the 4 operators are stuck in those corners, so I’d intuitively just imagined picking them up and grouping them for visual management and stuff. Which I guess is now a feature request, even for only 4 haha. And for 6 I’d certainly imagined them being in a circle/hexagon at init.

That Korg thing reminds me of the type of wild shit Vestax would come up with in the mid 00s (Faderboard, QFO, Controller One) but aimed at synth nerds rather than turntablists. Really sick seeing them step out of standard synth (or even instrument) architecture and go somewhere weird. I don't think I'll personally have a need for one but I hope that thing does well with performers.

PB12 is basically 2XPB6 plus the swank keybed. Full range Z with split capabilities once you hit the AT sensor is cool to be sure, but will other polyAT synths like Hydrasynth be able to replicate it with a firmware bump? Meanwhile PB12 has all the shortcomings of PB6. (Shared source lanes for morphee, 1 pair of outs, mediocre effects, and Steiner Parker + Moog instead of SEM + 2140) Would far rather have seen a consolidated interface PB6 desktop a year+ ago for south of $1700 and a keylab mk3 with this keybed. Initially fairly impressed with TEO-5. Too bad for "segment differentiation" reasons the designers were not allowed things like respond to MPE, bi-timbral, modern LFOs since they are just digital (fade in/out, phase, "N" shot), and maybe even 4 quadrant multiplier/voice for actual ring mod (and AM) instead of that digital crap. Still easily under $2k and now mindblowing instead of just pretty cool.

Excellent stuff! Speaking of magnets, have you seen the Flux that Vlad over at Soma is working on? That also looks quite intriguing. As for big synths, and you might've mentioned it last year, but thoughts on the Gemini given your love for the Super 6? I guess I can go hunting your video from last year :) Good on you and Bo for bringing some smaller makers and opinions to the surface. Sonic state and Synth Anatomy have the "giant hose of news updates" on lock, and other creators I find get too wound up in the positive (Sanjay C for example) - not a bad thing, but a bit sugary for me. Thanks for loving gear as usual Jorb :)

With the Poly8, Korg has the second most interesting concept at Superbooth 2024, after Vlad Kreimer's Flux. However, I'm not quite sure about the sound yet. The instrument is literally crying out for a completely different size and therefore a much more interesting sound. After all, a handpan sounds so good because it has a lot more mass that can be made to vibrate.

I assume that the PolyBrute 2 is perhaps a glimpse at the MIDI 2.0 version of the KeyLab series. Also hoping the Wiggler guys can figure out how to make that into a controller rather than synth. While the synth part is interesting, I think the controller market is probably much more likely to turn into a money maker for them.

I really like the idea of the Korg phase 8 but I’m not sure how it is going to actually be a flexible instrument. I mean it’s like a small chunk of an electric piano, but I think they need at least 4 octaves of tines personally I do, and then it needs motion recording like volcas. I’m at a loss for really seeing what they are going for with the device beciase it almost seems like a volca fm could cover the same territory.

50 million new synths, guitars, drum machines and effects released every year. Not to mention plugins. Yet somehow there's absolutely zero new music. How many times have we heard "so many opportunities for expression" but the music released is still (badly) emulating what we had 4 decades ago. As for KZbin videos: this goes boing boing, only $10k, to gather dust or you can release something that sounds worse than noise. If you dare say OK but where's the music? - Oh no, we don't do that here!
@JorbLovesGear

Are you saying there has been zero music released in the last year? None? And that no artist has taken advantage of any new technology since 1980? Are you serious? I saw live electronic music every night I was in Berlin, played on modern and vintage equipment. And how many songs a year justifies an instrument to you? How many songs per dollar makes someone legit? Why do you get to decide what's a legitimate use of someone else's time energy and money?
