Day 11 Ken woke up to a damp chill. His clothes from yesterday were still scattered on the floor, crusted with dried snow and dirt. The humiliation of his fall lingered like a bitter taste in his mouth. He rubbed his face, hoping to wipe the memory away, but it clung to him, stubborn and sharp. The silence of his apartment pressed down on him. He glanced at the bag of groceries his mom had left-it sat there like a monument to his neglect. He sighed and grabbed a stale piece of bread from the counter, chewing mechanically. He didn’t even notice the taste anymore. His phone buzzed. “Clash Royale: New Season Starting Soon!” Ken hesitated, staring at the screen. A part of him didn’t want to open the app, but what else was there to do? He tapped the notification, and the familiar music played. He queued for a match, his fingers trembling slightly from the cold. The opponent ran a Golem Beatdown deck. Ken tried to defend, but his elixir management was off, and the Golem barreled through his tower like it wasn’t even there. Defeat. Ken queued again, determined to win this time. His opponent played a Hog Cycle deck, and Ken couldn’t keep up. Every time he thought he had an opening, the opponent outplayed him. Defeat. He threw his phone onto the couch and buried his face in his hands. Even here, in this digital world, he couldn’t find a shred of success. A knock at the door startled him. “Ken, it’s your auntie!” Ken froze, his heart sinking. He didn’t want to deal with her, not today. The knocking continued, louder this time. “I know you’re in there,” she said firmly. “Open up.” Reluctantly, Ken shuffled to the door and cracked it open. His auntie’s eyes widened slightly as the smell hit her, but she composed herself quickly. “Ken, we need to talk,” she said, her voice soft but insistent. “This isn’t healthy. Your mom is worried, and honestly, so am I.” Ken couldn’t meet her eyes. “I’m fine,” he mumbled. “You’re not fine,” she said, stepping closer. “When’s the last time you cleaned up? Or went outside? You’re wasting your life, Ken.” Her words cut deeper than she probably intended. Ken felt a lump form in his throat, but he swallowed it down. “I’ll… I’ll clean up,” he said weakly, though even he didn’t believe it. His auntie sighed, her face full of sadness. “Please, Ken. Just try. For your mom. For yourself.” She left after a few more pleading words, leaving Ken alone once again. He closed the door and leaned against it, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor. The snow outside was still pristine, untouched by his failures. It mocked him, a beautiful world he didn’t feel a part of. Eventually, he picked up his phone and opened Clash Royale. The game loaded, cheerful and cruel as always. He queued for another match. This time, it was against a Balloon Freeze deck. Ken panicked as the Balloon reached his tower, and he misplayed his counter. The tower fell, and his hopes fell with it. Defeat. Ken tossed the phone onto the couch and stared blankly at the wall. He didn’t whisper to himself this time. The thought of tomorrow being different felt more distant than ever.

While Mississippi does have mild winters and thus a longer growing season, it can get too hot even for corn in the summer (anything about 86 degrees Fahrenheit starts to damage it). Furthermore, Mississippi gets so much rain in the spring that farmers struggle to find opportunities to plant the corn in the first place. This is a big problem because corn needs to be planted ASAP so that it can get through its early development and become robust enough to withstand less-than-ideal conditions (which are inevitable pretty much everywhere, including Mississippi).
