I completed the entire PVZ2 without spending a single penny. It is doable without paying anything (you only don't have the 'exclusive' plants). The reflourished mod was hard (without any level ups) but I completed it fully too.

I find Zomboss bossfight pretty balanced, it is intense but you can spam Ice-shroom and Jalapeno to heavily damage Zombot. However, you always need to keep one Jalapeno and Ice-shroom for the ice and fireball attacks.

You should start playing pvz remaster. It add alot of flavour to the game adding more levels and balance changes. They also add mere 5 PAGES wroth of new minigames. They also made the game more challenging by making zombies spawn more frequently and adding a night roof level. You should try it out it's really fun.

if you do a pvz2 series, it might be a good idea to try putting your sunflowers further up the lawn, most good players do this because you have a much better chance of winning if your sunflowers get eaten vs if your attacking plants get eaten, and pvz2 is actually somewhat difficult

You should consider playing pvz2 if you enjoyed this series. Let me make the differences between pvz1 and pvz2 more clear to make the decision easier for you. Pvz2 has a few gamemodes, but adventure is by far the best and easily lives up to the pvz1 adventure mode. It inroduces many new game mechanics which really build on the pvz1 gameplay in a great way, one of these is plant food. Plant food allows a chosen plant to perform a special ability, unique to each plant to help you beat the zombies. It's important to state that pvz2 adventure is significantly longer then the original game. This of course also means there are way more plants to unlock and different zombies to fight. The levels in pvz2 are usually shorter, but definitely more difficult, especially in later worlds. Similarly to pvz1, levels are still split into different worlds with different gimmicks and zombies. Pvz2 adventure however, despite being longer, doesn't get boring. Pvz2 introduces extra level objectives, for example, there could be a line of flowers on the lawn that you can't let zombies cross. There are multiple different gimmicks like that, and they make each level fresh, since they are always combined with a selection of zombies that you have not fought before. Minigame and conveyor belt levels are still present and make nice breaks in between challenges. Regarding the 'p2w' stuff, it's irrelevant to adventure mode. There are some plants that you can only unlock with money, but they aren't needed to win and they are mostly worse then many adventure plants, or just slightly better. Adventure mode is designed to be played and beaten with lvl 1 adventure plants, and nobody really should have any problem with it, considering the are many things the game allows you to do to prevent you from being stuck, such as upgrading plants, unlocking arena plants, abilites, zen garden and so on. In conclusion, consider playing pvz2 if you really enjoyed pvz1 and you don't mind starting a much longer series on a more difficult game, with more variety in plants and zombies. Adventure mode is just as good as in pvz1, maybe even better.
