Japanese value and social construct. People are judged in Japanese society if they didn't show humbleness.

I think he answered that already when he mentioned the transition from 20th century to 21st century architecture, from industrialisation to post-industrialisation and, thus, from architecture building monuments for humans to stare at to architecture building environments for humans to live in. This is a somewhat somewhat humbler goal, but much more useful for society at the same time.
