I can tell you I am a local police shift supervisor. And if I get a call about a drone flying and not on the app…I ain’t doing shit. That’s a federal law, I don’t enforce those. The FAA can send their non-existent “police force” out, but I have a feeling the pilot will be out of battery and I’ll be on another call by then.

@@Roanokee Ah, if I got you wrong I’m sorry. I guess I just see the letters DJI and assume expensive and non-hobbyist. @@robm.4512 no problem, it happens. For me the issue is that a cheap DJI Mini SE costs about $350 in the US. That device almost doubles the price. Obviously this effect on the much cheaper home builds are much worse. In fact, it is ridiculous. I would love to be a fly on the wall at the FAA in September, if even only one third of fliers in the US decide to comply. I live in Mossel Bay, South Africa. Our city council have just introduced a new law that is so badly written, it considers a kid flying a kite the same as someone flying a 7kg (about 16 pound) RC device. Utter stupidity.

I agree with much of what you say *except* ... You haven't factored in the huge amount of money that is being thrown into drone delivery and eVTOL pilotless air taxis. These companies do not want us in "their" airspace so unlike prohibition, CB radio etc, there is a huge amount of financial muscle backing the imposition of RID. Until the investors (and politicians) finally work out that neither drone delivery nor air-taxis are going to be economically viable in the forseeable future, RID will remain and the next step, Network RID with "pay to fly" will be rolled out.

I totally relate to you about flying. I did 10 years in the federal USP pen. I looked out the window for soooo long wondering what was beyond the trees that I could only see out the second floor window. Now as I’m flying my drone, the screen is my window and I no longer have to imagine what is beyond those trees. I can fly/soar for miles seeing what’s there and the feeling is invigorating ✈️

I had a similar thought about a RID near an airport. Dave lives on the top floor of an apartment block, it has a wonderful view. From the balcony Dave can see planes taking off and landing at the large airport not far away. Dave also loves flying RC planes, he owns almost twenty which he stores all around his apartment. He is a member of a RC plane club that have their flying field about 45 minutes from Dave’s apartment. Unfortunately the club field has not been made a FRIA, so members can only fly RC planes with RID. Dave bought three RID modules for almost $1000, which he mounts in whatever three planes he has chosen to fly at the club next. After installing the RIDs Dave tests that the RID and the plane controls before taking them downstairs and packing them into his car. While testing the RID in his apartment Dave set off alarms at the nearby airport, all planes were grounded or turned away. The News called it a terrorist operation, the FBI raided Dave’s apartment, Dave was shot and killed. Neighbours were shocked, “He seemed like a nice person, you would have never known that he was a terrorist”! 😮

RID isn't for public safety. It's not because too many drones are in the air. There is an airspace grab going on, and they want that 0-500 airspace to be commercialized, they need a way for autonomous drones to "see and avoid" recreational ones.

Also all your RID flights will be logged and anytime you fly BVLOS or too fast or in the wrong area or too high etc you'll be sent an automatic fine!

My recommendation is drone and plane pilots get a small RC car to put in their pocket. If the FAA comes around, crash the drone somewhere far away, and pull the car out and drive that. FAA doesn't have a whole lot of investigators and they're mostly busy with real airplanes. The fines will be outrageous, and unless you're flying some $10,000 drone (the fines are actually probably around $30,000) it's well worth it to trash your drone to avoid the fines. RID doesn't apply to ground vehicles. I've seen some nice little crawlers that will easily fit into a jacket pocket. Don't lie to the investigator, just drive the RC car and tell the FAA guy to go screw himself with a fence post.

I do hope you're right about RID fading away. In the ham radio community, the volunteers within the hobby do all the teaching, testing, filling out forms, and submitting everything to our own governing agency (ARRL). The ARRL even creates the question pools and tests. Once we, as Volunteer Examiners, submit everything to the ARRL, they verify everything and submit it to the FCC. The FCC does nothing outside of filing our forms and assigning the next consecutive call sign. The ARRL and volunteers do everything. There has only been a $15 charge for many years to take the test... until recently. Now we charge the $15 fee for the usual administration costs and testing fee for the ARRL, and once you pass the exam(s) the FCC now charges an additional $35 fee for doing virtually nothing. Seriously, the ARRL and volunteers do all the work. It's a money maker for the government and not likely to go away.

Ken, it's not paranoia about the govt going after you, it's the crazy citizen who wants to use his phone all to find where the operator is. Have you viewed any stories about those drone operators who have been harassed and worse by citizens? I live in a city where people fight and kill each other over parking spaces, and I don't need to have pilot location and identification available to the general public. If Remote ID pilot location/name could be contained to law enforcement, I wouldn't worry as much. I just cancelled my 1st drone order as a result. FAA has not made as nuanced and sophisticated a regulation as could have been made. So just keep up your by-the-books paid videos and Remote ID compliance, but just dare to include the reasons why many don't like it (which you haven't). And BTW, $300 is a ripoff for the module.

It won't be too much trouble for them and they don't need to send police to investigate. They'll simply check flight logs for violations and use the RID to mail you a nice little bill. And if you honestly think that a bureaucratic agency increasing their power scope while generating more money doing it is just gonna... back off because "it's too much trouble", then please pass that joint, because you're so high that you've left this planet and reality far behind.

The main differences between CB radio and Remote ID are the number of users (millions vs hundreds of thousands) and no commercial interest had any desire to use the CB channel frequencies whereas we have Amazon and others wanting the ground to 400' AGL to be their private highways. You might be misunderstanding the FAA b/c you aren't aware of the military-drones. Our drones are built to withstand temperatures up to 104f but the materials used in the military versions are somewhere around 250f-rated. Or maybe the DJI Mini 3 is at the peak-limits of what separates a civilian-drone from a military-drone(as in the lawsuit we got to learn that the military-scientists don't want us to have access to math that is math for the math used to land flying things).

Ken, you glossed over a few details in your CB radio analogy. The FCC had been issuing CB licenses for decades and yes there were lots law breakers and unlicensed operators. Early radios were large, expensive, and only had a few channels. Then the technology got better, smaller, cheaper, and radios came with 23 and later 40 channels. There were movies that featured CB radios and that helped create a perfect storm of demand. The FCC tried to keep up by increasing the cost for a license and using the money to fund enforcement of the rules. Then the FCC got sued. It seems that federal agencies are not allowed to charge more for a license than the cost to process the paperwork. Further, because they had been overcharging, the FCC was ordered to reduce the price for a license below the actual cost. At that point, the FCC gave up, at first they announced that licenses were free, and later that one didn't need to get a license. But, it took decades to get there, millions of users, and someone with enough money to sue a federal gov't agency. It is a shame there isn't a large, well funded, drone flyer group to collect dues and file such a lawsuit.

The FAA is really good at making stupid rules that make everything prohibitively expensive for the average person. I've flown RC and drones for years but recently gotten my PPL and because of all the red tape and "safety" rules the FAA has in place, I, with what I believe is a decent paying job, can't hardly afford a 50+ year old Cessna. Everything the FAA does in the name of "safety" ends up increasing costs and decreasing innovation in industry.

Clearly its for safety, if less people can afford it then there will also be less accidents ;)

Right now, my only objection (other than why do we need it) to RID is the module cost. We were promised that it would be ~$25-50, the cost of a crappy to decent servo. Currently, that's not the case. In the meanitime, I'll wait for our field's FRIA to get approved. Come Sept 16, I'll be flying, approval or not

I suspect that there will be “malicious compliance” on the DIY side with the broadcast modules. It would be quite easy to call someone on “covering” the module up, but I’d be shocked if there was no way to gimp the output power / range of one of them by desoldering the end of a little cap, or something similar. Or just very, very slightly cutting the length of the antenna dramatically affects the range of 2.4ghz The RID modules coming out will definitely be dissected to look for ways to limit their range, and any enforcement of this (ie, proving you didn’t tamper with it) will be very difficult.

I'm sure the FAA will enforce compliance with ADBS just as efficiently as they have enforced Part 107 compliance for commercial operators. 😄
