My favourite thing in Excel is that Microsoft will dramatically overhaul the GUI with every new version so tutorials just don't work 99% of the time

It is that. Unfortunately, Merge Cells has been part of Excel for a really long time.

How about if we need to stack it? The problem is you'll see imaginary value on the blank cell preventing it to overlap.

Nice method. Though the cell value will be work with the cells in the centre column

The value will be grouped for sorting (or whatever) with the column where the value is, regardless of where it looks after using Center Across Selection.
