I came to the University of Warwick a few months ago, full of hope for a vibrant, diverse social life. But the reality is far from that. The dream of making friends from around the globe feels like an illusion here in the UK. The campus is overwhelmingly dominated by Chinese students, making up about 60% of the population, while the rest are mostly from other Asian countries. People tend to stick rigidly to their racial groups-Chinese with Chinese, Black with Black, Indians with Indians. It's rare to find a truly diverse, mixed group of friends. There’s a chilling lack of friendliness. No one bothers to ask how your day was, and even fellow classmates seem to forget simple courtesies like saying goodbye after a lecture. The things we imagine-forming diverse friendships, going out to pubs, clubs, parks, or planning adventures like trekking, windsurfing, or scuba diving-are just fantasies that never come to life here. People keep to themselves; no one will even ask you for a coffee, a drink, or just to hang out. It’s incredibly isolating. The student and social life in the UK feels dull and soulless. People finish their studies, head back to their rooms, and the day repeats in a monotonous cycle. In smaller cities, it's even more eerie-by 7 or 8 p.m., everything shuts down, the streets empty, and it feels like a ghost town. The loneliness and sense of isolation eat away at you, making it hard to find joy or purpose. What’s the point of earning when there’s no one to share your time or experiences with? In class, it’s a sea of silent, socially awkward groups who keep to themselves. Outside, it’s rare to see friendships forming between different ethnicities, and any interaction with local British students is almost non-existent. The occasional Indian student with a British friend seems like an anomaly. Life here feels like a repetitive cycle-earn, spend on yourself, eat, sleep, repeat, all while feeling profoundly alone. Perhaps other European or Western countries, though harder to access, offer a better quality of life, because the UK’s social atmosphere has become stagnant. People seem to prefer isolation, content to live their lives in solitude, disconnected from any sense of community or shared experience.

as an international living in selly oak, I gotta admit about the safety part is unfortunately very much true. another point I’d like to add is thieves in selly oak (or near uni area) are so skillful in stealing bikes, even if you chained your bikes and put padlocks, in 2019 alone my friend’s bikes got stolen 3x times :(

I went to uni in london and the amount of stabbings in the area were I lived was insane, plus I know people that got beaten up and mugged coming back from nights out. I'm from brum and currently at uob and would say in my experience Birmingham is much safer. I think it is all dependent on where you live in both cities to the experience you have. Also I feel like due to the cost of living in London I personally didn't get to go out much or experience the city, its easier to go out and do stuff in Birmingham due to the costs but I do miss London transport.

If you look at official crime statistics they heavily disagree with you. Birmingham only being 10% of the population of london has almost the same number of homicides every year. The worst part is that a huge number of those homicides are carried out with the use of a firearm as opposed to a sharp melee weapon in London. So actually Birmingham is way more dangerous. WAY. Knife crime is also extremely exaggerated in this country. England is safe, gangs are not dangerous, American cities like Chicago holding less than 3% of the population of the entire uk has twice the amount of murders. That’s a city with a population of 2million having more murders than an entire 4 countries with a population of 67 million. And let’s not talk about Mexico City 😅. People need to stop complaining and realise how lucky they are to only hear about a few stabbings in the area every year instead of hearing gunshots and reports of cartel kidnappings almost daily.
@mariusmatei29462 жыл бұрын
@@ig1948 yeah, I'm getting the impression that between the two largest cities/metro areas of France, and the United Kingdom (Paris, Lyon, London, and Birmingham), Paris has the highest costs of living (while being a relatively dangerous city, in terms of violent crime), while Birmingham has the lowest costs of living (but, also, the highest incidence of violent crime; i.e. the most dangerous of the four cities); personally, I wouldn't like to live in either of them, but, instead, I'd much rather choose to live in cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Manchester, or Glasgow!

Great video Kenji! There's definitely plenty of places to hang out in in Birmingham, especially if you love food!! Sorry to hear that you got robbed though! That's the problem with Selly Oak being a "student area" as (like you said) everybody knows that's where all the students live and all the valuables are kept (and for many students, the laptops are new as a lot of people buy them on student discounts when they start)! Also, I totally agree on the academics rating there 👍🏻 There were very few lecturers who were in that 0.5-star bit that was missing for the rating to be 5-star 😆

I heard Birmingham's Medicine does not involve cadaver dissection as a way to learn anatomy. Any downsides to that in your opinion? Would you say it affects a student's overall anatomy knowledge?
@DoctorKenji4 жыл бұрын
I think learning anatomy from a textbook is very different and definitely isn't as good as learning it from a cadaver, however, I wouldn't let that stop you from applying to a uni that doesnt offer that!

Leeds offers cadaver dissection I think.

Why the accommodation provided by the university in the Vale village safer than that in Selly Oak? The vale seems to be far away from campus
