In this video I listen to Lateralus by TOOL and it melts my brain.
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990, the group's line-up includes drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist since 1995, replacing their original bassist Paul D'Amour.

The first time I listened to this song I didn't understand. Many years later I was able to listen to it, and feel it. I felt like I was hearing it for the first time again, and I cried.

Audio engineer here - he's layering different tones and octaves and not fixing the slight timing inconsistencies that are usually (over)corrected in most radio mixes in pop and rock. One normal track, one breathy, and one an octave lower is what I'm hearing in that section. Possibly a slightly time modulated quick "slapback" delay that goes in and out of alignment with the original as well. You can also do this with the early reflections of a room reverb too. Usually pop/rock and even hip-hop doubles try to have the double sound as exact to the original as possible, whereas this is more like two different guitars playing the same line to sound bigger.

There is also a digital “reversed envelop” effect also a forment shift. They are both polyphonic DSP effects. There a number of devices/softwares that do this. What one they used no idea.

Ken Lavigne I can’t call myself professional audio engineer, more like a hobbyist, but what was often done especially in the earlier days of digital recording and in the metal genre was doubling the vocal track, shifting the duplicated slightly back or forth, and spreading both tracks in the stereo field. This obviously is very similar to a very short delay effect; due to the very short time shift (I think around 50-200ms, it is now 20 years ago that I last used that) and because both tracks are identical - not only similar - one will get typical phasing effects dependent on present frequencies. Reason for doing it this way instead of just using a delay effect: a delay effect costs calculation performance, doubling the track - not so much. As said, I consider myself an amateur, but this was recommended to me back in the day by professionals. Lateralus to me always sounded similar, especially the kind of „thinned out“ but widespread vocals. Of course you get similar effects when using multiple takes. I’m by far not knowing enough to analyse Tools track regarding what they used.

The Fibonacci sequence follows a pattern where each successive number in the sequence is the sum of the preceding 2 numbers so it starts with 0 and 1 which equals the next number, 1 making the next number the sum of the preceding 2 numbers which are 1 and 1 so the next number is 2 which is added with the preceding 1 to make 3 which added with the preceding 2 equals 5, so the sequence goes 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, and on and on. It's a commonly found pattern in nature which represents a pattern of exponential growth but most interestingly this sequence is found to be intimately tied to the golden ratio which is a ratio found by dividing a full line into a longer and shorter line such that the proportion of the full line to the longer line is the same as the longer line to the shorter line with the resulting golden ratio which is 0.618... or 1.618.... Also known as "phi" and commonly written as the Greek symbol phi it is an irrational number that never ends nor repeats similar to "pi". The odd relationship between the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio was discovered by dividing any 2 successive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence. The further down the sequence you go you will notice that by dividing any 2 successive numbers the closer the sum approaches the golden ratio. In fact if you follow down the sequence and divide every 2 successive numbers the sums oscillate slightly higher and slightly below the golden ratio, getting closer and closer to the actual value of the golden ratio but never quite reaching it. The golden ratio is found throughout nature, art and architecture and is considered to be an aesthetically pleasing proportion. The golden spiral derived from the golden ratio is also found throughout nature from the growth of nautilus shells, in galaxies, in growth patterns of plants so the concept fits in with the overarching theme of the song which is about personal development, striving, evolving, discovering and feeling interconnected with the world. You'll notice the lyrics "as above so below and beyond I imagine" equals 13 syllables as the vocals follow up and down the Fibonacci sequence, best exemplified in the 2nd verse which goes "black (1) then (1) white are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy (5) red and yellow then came to be (8) reaching out to me (5) let's me see (3) there is (2) so (1) much (1) more and (2) beckons me (3) to look through to these (5) infinite possibilities (8) as above so below and beyond I imagine (13) drawn beyond the lines of reason (8) push the envelope (5) watch it bend (3). So the syllabic formula of the vocals swings up and down the Fibonacci sequence, a sequence intimately related to the golden ratio/golden spiral, as the lyrics urge listeners to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human and spiral out, keep going, spiral out, keep going.

Cracking reaction, so many hidden Easter eggs in this song. “Ride the wave”, waves when breaking have the same spiral geometry, there’s a great KZbin video on it all, worth finding it. Next up, polyrhythms masterclass by Danny Carey in Pneuma live, one man, four limbs and seemingly a separate brain for each! Saw tool live last year, 100,000 people, one band, one song but all nodding their heads to their own individual groove, epic.

I know what you mean with people nodding in their own groove. But that's simply because 90% of the audience don't get a 7/8. Infact they don't get anything that is not 4/4. But well, as long as they still enjoy it, it's fine :)

H is the first song of tool that I listened to, other than on the radio. I listened while watching the sun set sitting on a beach, listen to them while in nature. Tool means something different to every listener, it's part of their beauty. Take time to listen to them when you're alone, don't hold yourself accountable to us and think you can only explore them here with us. They should be personal to you, we're just glad you're listening at all 🙂💗

I was fortunate to get to see that version live back in either ‘97 or ‘98. When he sang the lyrics “I must persuade you another way” the entire venue vibrated from the strength of his voice. Talking about goosebumps!!

In Hermeticism, there is a book created by the "Three Principalities" called "The Kybalion", in it Hermés Trismegistro left seven universal principles: 1. Mentalism 2. Correspondence 3. Vibration 4. Polarity 5. Rhythm 6. Cause and Effect 7. Generation Tool's reference in the song "Lateralus" not only refers to the Fibonacci Series but to the hermetic principle of "Correspondence" which reads as follows: "As below is above ... as above is below; As inside is outside ... as outside is inside " That is why the reference that the song says of "As below so above and all that I imagine" ... it can be interpreted that the correspondence is like the inside is outside and that the imagination (in this case, Mentalism) generates that Paradox that everything is in complete harmony.

Rosetta Stoned is a fucking MASTERPIECE. And its not even that avant garde. Its essentially nonsense but it resonates and is somehow so familiar. Its one of the most creative pieces of music I've ever heard, and Im still blown away by how well it works. Ive said it before, I'll say it again. Only Maynard can make shitting the bed sound poetic. 🤷🏽‍♀️

You can hear this vocal dub that Maynard does in some of his other works like in A Perfect Circle. he records the lyrics twice, once just singing them through melodically like normal, then he records the lyrics again monotone and all as one note in key with the song; generally the root note of whatever scale/ key they're playing in.

I love your vids man. I can tell you have a true respect for great musicians. You made an incredible insightful point about Maynard’s vocals there near the end. Those who’ve not been fortunate enough to see TooL live may not know that’s precisely how much the band respects one another’s work. So much so that for years now Maynard has actually sang from the back of the the stage. They’ve always made it about the music.

I heard from a friend that the vocal affect you mentioned at the start is 3 separate tracks of Maynard layered on top of one another, he sings the words in slightly different moods to give it a more mystical all encompassing feel.

Thanks for this, this song was the first tool song that I feel in love with since this album came out sophomore year of high school. It use to give me goosebumps cause it has such an emotional element. but 20 years later, I listen to the song so many times, thought I still get into it, its now nearly as raw. But I suppose being able to watch this and know the epic journey this is the first time you hear it. Even if just once, so happy to hear this in a way that felt new again! Thank you!

If you really do enjoy listening to tool I would say check out “stinkfist” off the Ænima album. That’s when tool imo was at their “trippiest” and stinkfist is my favorite song by them

I was 12 years old when this was originally released. I fucking loved this song as a kid. I didn't know how to analyze music or how to fully grasp the meaning behind the their lyrics but I knew that this music was damn cool and fun to listen to. I'm very glad to have been a part of my generation for being able to be around when this and music like this came out originally. This song makes me feel emotional as an adult. I'm remembering a load of memories as a kid. Time with friends who I've lost or just haven't seen in ages. Remembering going to my hangouts and just chilling with the buddies playing card games and bsing about life and our interests. Such great memories! The music of the 90's just gets me in that mood. Anything that was played on the radio from 92 - 2003 or so will likely have a similar effect with me. Thank you for choosing to react to this song Ken! You rock, buddy!

I wish that I could experience this song again for the first time. :) HOLY SHIT.. you clipped in The Matrix! xDD That's so awesome! I love that you did that. It really does help explain your thoughts/feelings on how you're feeling while listening to this for the first time. I want you to know that it's completely normal and natural. You're on a trip with this song and I'm glad that you're aboard! :) xD MILD criticism.. you paused RIGHT WHEN Maynard was getting into some vocals. :P Obviously you didn't know that was going to happen and you didn't want to wait to express your thought (good move), it just kinda irritates me when people pause music in the middle of vocal on the first listen. Know though, that I love your commentary on that pause, concerning the bass pulsing bit. Also, I laughed incredibly hard when you said "Okay words don't really make much sense right now." xD Welcome to the joy of this era of industrial/rock. Tool is second to none in that. Nine Inch Nails is a bit different than Tool. I can't compare them directly with one and other. I'll always prefer Nine Inch Nails over Tool, but this entire album is brilliant. I STRONGLY suggest that you give it a listen uninterrupted from beginning to end. You'll thank me after you finish.

Fun fact - The album construction - listen to all of it normally from track one to the last track. Now listen to it again backward, from the last track to the first one - this has been their hidden album. Layers on layers? they went further.

I discovered tool by accident. One day back in the AIM days I decided to log in into a random chatroom (you could just put random numbers in the address bar, and jump into a random chatroom for you younger folk). I was maybe 10 or 11 and the people in the chatroom were in their higher teens. I asked what they were talking about, the teens annoyed that a child had jumped into their chatroom were reluctant to make me a part of their conversation. Still there was one & I’ll never forget the girl who introduced me to Tool, her name was Maurey. She told me, “They’re just being assholes don’t worry about them. We’re talking about a band named Tool and it’s music. Look up a song called ‘Lateralus’, tell me if you like it.” I to this day over two decades later, couldn’t describe what I felt as a child. I still find it hard to describe to this day but in retrospect: a mixture of belonging, being, familiarity while at the same time recognizing it as an unfamiliar ‘something’- escapism to higher, place, plane, something beyond, and I’ve been spiraling ever since.

For being your first time hearing this song you got it's meaning straight away man! The Fibonacci sequence is the mathematical formula for a spiral, and the song is about the fractal nature of the universe. It's meant to make you feel like you are flying through the spiralling arms of the galaxy.

Welcome to TOOL World, they take you on a ride and your lost in it and have no sense of time. They start you off slow and pull you in, your caught up and before you know it they are bringing you back down and you say Wow! Then you ask yourself where have I been this whole time not having known or listened to Tool before. Lol love your reaction. Tool Army!💪👍🇺🇸

The sequence follows the rule that each number is equal to the sum of the preceding two numbers. The Fibonacci sequence begins with the following 14 integers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 ... Each number, starting with the third, adheres to the prescribed formula. So 1 + 0 = 1 , 1+1=2 , 1+2=3 and so on. Maynard sings using the sequence up to the number 13. The same with the music. If you listen to the drums closely you will pick up the pattern. Not only the syllables divisione follow the Fibonacci sequence, but also the duration of the song, the time in seconds when the various parts of songs begin ( when the singing starts for example), the time signature and the lyrics itself. Everything in this song is based on Fibonacci or the golden ratio. It's an amazing display of compositional skill.

Here's what I found on Progbreakdown. Before we delve into this track properly, a cool thing about this track is that it uses the mathematical concept of the Fibonacci sequence throughout. The song is written in bars of 9/8, 8/8 and 7/8 repeating, and 987 is the 16th number in the sequence. The first section of the song runs at 01:12, the first four digits of the sequence being 0, 1, 1 and 2. The first verse starts at 97 seconds, or 1.618 minutes - the Golden Ratio. Each verse is 55 seconds long, 55 being the 11th number in the sequence. Finally, the syllables in the verses follow the first digits in the sequence.The song itself is 9m 24s long, 9 being the sacred triad 3x3=9. The Fibonacci sequence has a pattern that repeats every 24 numbers. the 9 and 24 is what I found with a little google searching on sacred geometry.

he achieves this with simple vocal doubling. He records multiple takes and they use them all. Easily 4 vocal track on this one at least. 2 melody takes that are balanced more toward one side or the other, 1 harmony buried, and one whispered take. You can sort of create a creepy version of this effect with some plugins or with a vocal doubler, but his are definitely multiple takes.

Not sure, because these guys are amazing, but I think, the vocals were used doubling, but also, a "reverse" reverb tail is used in some passages. So, you will record the vocals and pass them through reverb, then use the tails, reverse them and put them before the vocals starts. That makes the effect of the whispering sensation. But uff, it is just a thought! Amazing reaction ;)

I know this is years late..... but you're on the tool train finally!!!! (you'll never get off it I hope lol) this album changed me when it came out. imagine hearing this as a late teen.... imagine hearing it as a late teen while doing certain late teen dumb stuff... lmao. man it changed how I looked at music forever. you're right. a kaleidoscope. the milky way... that thing you did at the end with your head.. yeah bro. chyyyeeaaahhhh!!! the fetal position? or on your back stretched out? yes. both. a dark room. a cool crazy light/lava lamp.... some incense.... depart this earth. and remain on it. so good live. such a good life.

The opening/chorus riff is in 9/8/7 beat phrases, not sure how it'd be written out, while the verse riff is 5 beats, most likely 5/4. The interlude feels like it falls into 4/4, then I've got no idea what the end is, 6/8 maybe? I've always liked how the vocals aren't a featured thing in Tool, they're just another instrument in the band. The songs aren't _for_ the lyrics/vocals, they're a part of the whole.

Oh wow this was relatively recent! YEah Lateralus is widely considered their Magnum Opus but their roster is chock FULL of interesting tone and stylistic choices that will constantly keep your ears on their toes, so to speak. That is to speak nothing of the temporal WIZARDRY at work in their stuff. As a bassist I'm a huge fan of the bass/drum breakdown in Rosetta Stoned (a song about an acid trip) but other fan favorites are Schism, The Pot, Vicarious, 46 & 2.

So, the thing about the fibonacci sequence is that it's pervasive in nature. It's in pineapples, in pine cones, in shells, in the number of leaves on a lot of plants. A lot of smaller flowers will have three or five petals. In the head of a sunflower the seeds make fibonacci spirals. But at its base, the Fibonacci sequence is a ratio. If you take any number from the sequence (after the first few) and divide it by the number that follows, you will get about 61.8%. it varies a little, sometimes it's 61.76, sometimes its 61.79. And further more, if you take a number from the sequence and divide it by the number three positions after, you'll get 23.6%. I mean, you'll probably find the actual numbers of the sequence, but I think the ratios, the relationships of the numbers might be more significant, especially since it's easier(or more straight forward) to transpose ratios into music than straight numbers.

We don't know where you are at in your discovery of Tool, but i think it's time for a reaction of one of their videoclips. And since you didn't react to anything from the album Aenima yet, i suggest the videoclip of the title song Aenima. That's the one that did it for me, that's when i discovered Tool.

I can't see it mentioned yet (apologies if anyone has said it and it's deeper than my quick scan across the comments) so the time signature for the main riff where you get yourself tied in knots: one bar 9/8, one bar 8/8, one bar 7/8 and wouldn't you just know, 987 happens to be a fibonacci number

Also, the beats in the measures when the band comes in are 9,8,7 (987) which is in the sequence. The time the band comes in is in the sequence. There's a long video on youtube that covers every reference/relation to the sequence and it's incredibly amazing.
