Even for 2001. This performance on a popular late night show was unheard of. Conan did something special with this.

This is before Corey learned to do a Healthy scream.

yeah back in these days Corey used to blow out his vocals a lot. then Melissa Cross came in to save the day and essentially revolutionize metal screaming as a whole. I have a vocal training tool sitting on my desk in front of me designed specifically after some of her lessons with blowing into water with a straw lol

God I miss this Corey. It felt so much more emotional it felt so primal I have searched my entire life to find another band that has that same sound but I can’t. I am not a fan of Corey’s new sound unfortunately but I’m glad he is taking care of himself but nothing will beat this sound.

This is when Corey was drinking three bottles of Jack a day.

@@dedo7326The closest you might come to someone who sounds close to Corey's Iowa sound is the vocalist of the band "Left Behind". It's almost there but the band plays more sludge/mid tempo groove metal. But they're really good.

Conan had a lot of very amazing and “controversial” bands play on his show that no other show would allow. He knew the importance of a non conformity anti authority message. We need it now more than ever. Too bad it will never happen on mainstream media ever again.

Conan O'Brien had a guy who searched talent so Conan wasn't the one who got them on air but of course he had some say on the matter

Fun fact: Max Weinberg, who played drums for Conan and for Bruce Springsteen, had his son Jay with him at this show. This performance inspired Jay to want to play drums, and he joined Slipknot in 2014. That's insane.

Awesome selection, Ken! This was an unbelievable performance for the time. Most of the audience in the studio and at home will be mouthing: "What the heck!", either in silence or out loud. You're completely right: it was a different time. Slipknot's aggression, instrumentation, vocal delivery, precision, timing and mixing was a revelation when their debut album came out in 1998. By the time "Iowa", their second album which "The Heretic Anthem" came from, their sound was well established to those who have explored their music. However, for anyone outside the metal-listening genre, this performance would have been a complete shocker. This is not Metallica type of metal. For stage performance from the same era, try the official live video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omSqn35pl811p7M

I agree the audio on this live performance isn't the best. The "cleanest" sound would probably be the album version. If you want a cleaner or best live performance of this it would probably be from the Disasterpieces Live in London 2002

Ken, I think Metal is misunderstood too often. Slipknot brings so many topics to the light; e.g. bullying, religion, government, etc. I have been to 8 Slipknot concerts and they only get better. Check out Disasterpiece live in London; it will kick your ass.

Ken, as a vocal coach, what is going on lately with you reviewing stuff like this?
@shotaholic1 Жыл бұрын
because an open minded artist should explore all types of music. lots of reactors and vocal coaches have opened up to listening to metal and find they actually enjoy it. granted, maybe not all of it, but at least more then they expected.
