Kenneth More, 67 CBE (1914-1982) actor

Kenneth Gilbert More, CBE, 67 (20th September 1914 - 12th July 1982) was an English film and stage actor. Raised to stardom by the veteran car based film-comedy Genevieve (1953), he appeared in many roles as a carefree, happy-go-lucky gent. His biggest hits from this period include Raising a Riot (1955), Reach for the Sky (1956), and The Admirable Crichton (1957). He starred in Doctor in the House (1954), the first of the popular Doctor film series. Although his career declined in the early 1960s, two of his own favourite films date from this time - The Comedy Man (1964) and The Greengage Summer (1961) with Susannah York, "one of the happiest films on which I have ever worked." He also enjoyed a revival in the much-acclaimed TV adaptation of The Forsyte Saga (1967) and the Father Brown series (1974).

I’m almost 62 years of age, and for as long as I can remember I have loved and admired this lovely gentleman. His films are always a pleasure to watch, and I never tire of them. My biggest regret is that I never had the opportunity to meet him. RIP Mr More.

Loved and admire this man it's a shocking shame his friends and fellow actors abandoned him because he love and married the beautiful Angela Douglas. Your private life should have nothing to do with your acting life. What you do privately stays private. He was a giant on screen and still is. Well it's their loss. He did what he wanted and admire him for that. He shall always be admired regardless and for those who turned away shame on you. He is and always shall be a true gentleman. People like him are rare. Awhile ago I came across a newspaper article about Angela Douglas. As I recall it, after More died she had lived for over 20 years with another man and finally, in New York, they had decided to marry. Just a justice of the peace it sounded like, but after the wedding they had invited a number of close friends to a celebratory meal at a restaurant, and two of the guests were Sally Ann Howes and her husband - such a long time for them to have had a friendship!

Sink The Bismarck 1960 was a lead role and a great performance and also his part in the Battle of Britain stands out amongst many great actors sharing the screen, including Michael Caine, Michael Redgrave, Laurence Olivier, Trevor Howard and more. Great actor, and an indelible part of my childhood.

In that movie, which Mr. Brown didn't mention, was a lady friend of mine that I knew several years later, was the beautiful Dana Wynter, the female costar to Kenneth More. I knew her when she lived in Ojai, California. Sadly she passed about 11 years ago. I miss her greatly.

English is spoken in so many dialects and accents so how do we define English spoken so well. i think Kenny Moore is great but his portrayal of Charles Lightholler is a bit flawed as Lightholler was born in Chorley near Preston, Lancashire and i have heard him speak (it,s on tube) so why not do the perfect thing and make Moore do a Lancashire accent or is that unforgiving in them times?

*He always selected films that could be enjoyed by a family audience. My Mum's great favourite, who because she was brought up a Plymouth Brethren never went to the 'pictures' However got around this by being in the **_St John Ambulance,_** which in those days it was required to have a qualified medical 1st Aid in cinemas. I remember her telling me she had seen "The 39 Steps" with Kenneth Moore and what a great film it was, and "A Night to Remember"*

I JUST finished that movie. I started to think of that line from "Fawlty Towers:" 'Well if it isn't the Admirable Crichton.' ( to Manuel ) Loved the movie. Bit of a surprise ending..... That last photo, here was beautiful. I thought he was a handsome and apparently a modest man.

Interesting and revealing documentary. He might have said he was an extrovert, but he came across as quite humble and self-effacing and he had a nice line in stories. He was a very popular fixture in the British cinema, and later television, and he seems to have found his niche in the country he loved and that was a large, but sufficient, niche for him to thrive. I am old enough to remember going to see Genevieve and Reach for the Sky with my sister and mum and dad when they were first released. There were long queues to get into the cinema. To many people, he would be the face of Douglas Bader more than Douglas Bader's own! One of his main attribute that's very obvious to us nowadays is his slightly old-fashioned, distinctive but very natural, clear and effortless speaking voice: certainly quite English, verging on posh, but a voice that would fit in well without effort in any role he'd care to take on. I imagine it worked well in the theatre too.

Until 6 months ago I’d never seen or heard of Kenneth More. I just happened across “The Clouded Yellow”, and since it had Jean Simmons in it I decided to watch it. More has quite a small role in it, but one of importance. Needless to say I was/am hooked! And I’m not even 50 years old yet😀!

Without a doubt his best years in **_Cinema_** (when almost everyone went twice a week and sometimes more,) were the 50's & 60's. TV nearly killed off Cinema in the late 60's - early 70's and many closed. Worth looking out some of his older films that can be often found on "Talking Pictures" & "Sony Movie Channel" in the UK, Genevieve, A Night to Remember and The 39 Steps were shown recently.*

The early 50's were still a period where you could not get away with anything suggestive in American movies, and I remember one line in Genevieve uttered by Kay Kendall regarding More's character going to Brighton each year, with a different woman ,each time, when John Gregson's "wife" says 'Does he come down to Brighton every year for the rally , and Kay replies "Yes , and the other", a suggestive line that the still active Hays code in the US would not have been allowed.
