Interesting there are down votes to this.. Who honestly down votes this? This was probably their best build by far. The quality, the materials, the craftsmanship and time put into it was superb. The final product was a beautiful mix of modern and traditional.

Perhaps it may have to do with some negative views some people have with katanas. If you don't know many people, myself included, hate people who view katanas as the perfect sword. Although many do like and find appreciation of the design. I'd still rather have a longsword but I do like the katana. Although, there are a few who have a blind hate of it, same as a blind love of it. I do agree, this is one of their best build.
@anrexfk
@anrexfk 7 жыл бұрын
you cannot deny that there is not sword more perfect then the Katana ... however you cannot do with the katana what you can do for example with the broadsword ... you can grab the broadswords blade with your hand and slam its kling in the enemy's face ... try to do that with a katana and by the time you actually hold the blade? your fingers are off.
@McJaews
@McJaews 7 жыл бұрын
anrexfk Comments like yours are part of the reason this video has down votes. The katana is not the perfect sword. The broadsword is not there perfect sword. *There is no perfect sword.* People just have different levels of affection for different aesthetics, as well as different reasoning for ranking swords as more or less useful in different situations. Swords are tools and/or status symbols and/or terrible kitchen knives depending on who, what, and where you look. Lastly; any piece of steel that you can forge into a sword blade, can be sharpened equally. A broadsword and a katana made from the same steel can become equally sharp. Neither would have cut through a person's fingers just from holding it, because that's not how cutting works, and the katana has less chance of cutting the wielder due to having only 1 edge.

Hope to one day have a reproduction commissioned. Probably never be able to afford it though. Oh well.

It's a potent reminder of the FACT that a significant proportion of the curve of a historic katana is due to the quenching process. You can actually see the effect of the clay warping the blade (effectively making a bimetal).
@obsidiansands
@obsidiansands 7 жыл бұрын
It really isn't wasted time. It just depends on what someone considers "wasted time", "tedious" and "fun". Dunno about you, but some blade smiths like Ilya take their work as an art form - especially since Ilya stated that he has studied traditional techniques rigorously even to this day. Supposedly; in one of the AWE me videos, it was stated that he is one of the few Western master smiths widely acknowledged in those areas. Pretty much why it's almost always usually him front and center in the videos when it comes to traditional techniques more often than not. For people like him, smithing is more than just "making blades" wholesale. It's about the philosophy behind the craft as well as the art in it. It's why I like the Reforged crew a little more than Swatton's - no offense to Swatton as I know he can also make some stuff traditionally - but they don't always rely on plasma cutters and sheets of prefab metal most of the time - they literally make some blades semi-traditionally to full-on traditionally as well as explain a little more on what goes on during the process. That video a while back that they did with a scissor sword blade made from actual scissors melted down to become the final product is something I don't think Swatton would have done if it was still him in the show.
@BernieFromTheInternet
@BernieFromTheInternet 7 жыл бұрын
making blades is an art form. a bladesmith who makes things in wholesale has no business being an artist.instead of wasting time smelting and consolidating old school blume steel, you can make the blade much more beautiful and spend the time making it art rather than just being able to say it was smelted from dirt. The only real way to make blades art is with physical beauty, form and functionality. all the ideological beauty, for example, polishing on stones rather than using a sander for most of it and finishing with sand paper by hand is a massive waste of time. Polishing on stones = at least a few whole days (depending on how fine the rough grind is) sander+hand sand paper = a few hours ... final product - the same quality of polish. result - more time to put into making your blade better.

In one of the earlier episodes someone said that Ilya is a art school graduate, so he most likely applied his art skills to a different materials (he learned engraving by himself). There is plenty of free information on the internet, so if you have an access to proper tools, there's a lot you can learn just by trying to apply what you saw or read about. Metalworking is not that difficult - one just need to be patient and observant. Some natural talent also helps.

I really like the way you made the sword, it has a really unconventional handle and transition into the blade, and you just put the blade right through it and it turned out really nicely. I thought that feat of art was really classy. Also the Great Sword of Artorias.

Isn't that just a regular Katana with a dull edge and a sharpened back? There wouldn't be much of a difference and they've already made at least three Katanas (four if you count Sephiroth's Masamune as a Katana and not an Odachi).
