Good grief another composer captivated by Goethe! I Iove the Schubert version esp with Barbara Bonney, but this one is perfect for that lovely bass voice. I was puzzled by the German start in the context of Little Women .Its roused my curiosity about the opera

I have actually performed this aria before and studied the opera. I can answer that for you: At this point in the second act, Jo and Bhaer have both returned from a night at the ballet, and are discussing their mutual love of art and poetry. Jo asks Bhaer to recite something he enjoys, to which he chooses the poem 'Kennst Du Das Land'. Also, it is worth noting that there is a bit of dialogue between each verse that is cut out in this performance. She says "it is beautiful but wishes...." to which Bhaer replies "......to understand the words?" He then sings the poem in English using it as a confession of his love for Jo. The first verse of this aria is one of the only parts of the opera in another language, the rest of which is sung in English.
