In west also they refer memories with school grades (standards) but since they have Primary, middle and High schools as 3 separate schools, they refer it to as "when I was High school or middle school sophomore or senior etc"... They would say grades until 5th standard (for primary schools) after that they use middle schools (6th, 7th and 8th) and high schools (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th for US) for reference rather than grades (standards)....

Indians do this thing where even though they know the grammatically right way to say a sentence, they will shorten it by removing any unnecessary words. You can clearly see it in the way Kenny speaks, where it sounds borderline illiterate, but if you watch him like have a real conversation on a podcast or something you realise he can speak perfectly good English. I think it comes from English as a language being a lot less efficient than native Indian languages, so we try to compensate. It's gotten to a point where everyone kinda understands that this is how english in india works and no one corrects each other. So that's kinda where the "When I was small" thing comes from I guess. It is kinda a cultural thing.

When she said she was "small", its kind of a literal translation from hindi to english that made it happen. In hindi, "Old" and "Young" translates to "Bada" and "Chota", and also "Big" and "Small" translates to "Bada" and "Chota". So often when people are speaking in english, they're phrasing what they want to say and translating it in their mind and then speaking out which in terms lets out these literal translation sometimes. Also, you'd probably understand what they actually mean, just like Kenny did, and hence no reaction to it.
@silverfeather23153 жыл бұрын
Well in India we have to write a whole story based on few words in like 10 mins when we were in school...so yeah I think we have that creativity to make stories on the spot because we wanted that 5 marks of story writing in exams and no one ever got 5 out of 5 for that most creative would get 4 and half but never 5 Edit : we have story writing question in languages exams and basically they give you 5-6 words like keywords and you have to form a story and write it in 10 mins cause exam is of 80-90 marks for 3 hours so you don't have enough time... So make story in 5 secs and write it in 5-10 mins

Many Indians when they speak in English, certain words they use are the direct translations of words or phrases in their mother language. "When I was small" is one of such instances.
