Liu Kang is definitely the phoenix. They probably decided to stay away from the dragom with him because his fatality already uses fire dragons - same way that Reptile isn't a form of a lizard. Li Mei is likely the lion and if we get a dragon or dragon like creature, it'll be Shao.

Liu being the phoenix becomes a bit more obvious when you notice the red and blue fire motif on the phoenix, well that and phoenix tend to be reborn after self cremation (Reborn timelines).

Me and most fans are suspecting Li Mei to get a lioness as her animality plus it makes since Li Mei is loyal to the royal family and will give her life to protect them especially after the deaths of Jerrod and Sindel, and a actual lioness has that same loyalty to her pride her family, and protective instincts around her family especially her cubs and will fight you and if need be kill you if you threaten the family.

Classically he’s the very dragon of the MK symbol, however he’s not regular Liu Kang anymore.. as of the ending of MK11 he is “reborn” as the creator of the universe/God of Fire and so it only makes sense that as the lord of the universe he would be a rarer more mystical animal that is still associated with fire but also boasts a more auspicious/divine/cosmic quality.

And unlike Cyrax, who also has armor but is more agile and tricky, Sektor is more of a hit-first-and-hit-hard annihilator

As a Reptile guy since mk3 I love his new animality! And yes, plants are not animals, but I see these animalities more like creepy giant creatures rather than just animals, we have mythological creatures like a phoenix and the freaking T-rex skeleton, so we knew there wasnt a specific rule for these. And the Venus flytrap fits so good with reptile, since he already is a walking animality bc he can turn into lizard form as he pleases, they give him a plant form animality, its just perfect.

Growing Up in Puerto Rico and learning all about Plant Life I never thought a Carnivorous Plant would be a Animal, although it’s fitting for Reptile as those Plants have Neutrians that Suck the Organic Matter of Bugs and Arachnids that’s like Stomach Acid, although they don’t have Tongues unless we’re talking about Poison Ivy’s Constructs, and while Scorpion does look like a Scrapped Skin of Season 1, I do like the Reddish Orange, Black, and Yellow with the Burning Details and Smoke as a Gorilla makes sense and you have to stop with the Smoke Hate and the Phoenix makes Sense as he already has Dragons in his Fatality and you forget that Liu has Die and Reborn more times than Scorpion and Noob like a Phoenix and maybe the Tiger is Li Mei.

Liu King is the Phoenix because his fatality uses a dragon same with reptile both of his fatalities use a lizard and you saw him turn into a Venus flytrap, so Liu kang is the Phoenix

I'm 41 and been around since the beginning, but I think that Phoenix is 100% Liu Kang. I don't think he'll be a dragon for the same reason Reptile isn't a reptile. He already has dragons in his fatality. I agree it's weird he's not a dragon, but that Phoenix just looks like Liu Kang. Li Mei will be something purple.

13:26 Well, I see two possible reasons to this. 1: the dragon has been a thing for a long time, but at the same time, it got kinda old. We don’t want things to be redundant. 2: if there was one animal that would fit Liu kang as much if not better, especially now, it’s the Phoenix. Not only is it a creature with magical fire, but it’s also something that is both a mythical creature like the dragon and something that a god of fire like Liu Kang would be associated with. Especially since it rises from the ashes like Liu Kang did in the new timeline.

Smoke is a Gorilla because they live in misty mountains area (mist and smoke can somewhat be alike). Like the Sigourney Weaver movie Gorillas in the mist. That is what I think, at least Liu Kang as a phoenix is great. The dragon was awesome, yes; but is refreshing to give him a new animal, specially that new animal being one that represents fire and rebirth (pretty much what Liu Kang is in his new era)

Yes and yeah I have to agree with you Rain should have been a shark, an elephant, or any sea or water based animal, the pufferfish works great with him but the area or the arena should be filled with water, and Sub-Zero should have been a polar bear, a Penguin, a seal, a Walrus, or any ice based animal or any animal that has to do with the cold the mammoth works great and it is good but the other choices are better, and Noob Saibot should have been a black crow, a black raven or a black panther or any black feline, and for smoke then should have give him a skunk, a black bull or any other animal that sticks to him because the gorilla does not suit him well, and Reptile should have been a salamander, a lizard, a crocodile, a turtle, komodo dragon, or any other reptile, the plant suits him very nice and it's quite good but it's not an animal it's a plant, and with Scorpion they got it right this time, now kitana's one it's good with the hummingbird but I thought they would make her a rabbit again, and Li Mei should be a Swan, or any animal that reflects the light and sparks, and Liu Kang should be the dragon again because I think he is the giant phoenix, Havik's one is not confirmed yet and I think the hyena is Baraka, and I think Baraka should a porcupine, and finally Takeda should have been a centipede but the kraken suits him well also

The reason why I think they didn't make Liu Kang into a dragon is because that is what his original animality was and I noticed that there are no repeat animalities from mk3. They probably wanted to try something new because Liu Kang has turned into a dragon in mk2, mk3, mk4, mk9, mk 11 (in fatal blow). The scorpion animality is fine because in the original game, Sheeva had the scorpion one due to Scorpion not arriving until umk3. Sure Scorpion turned into a scorpion as a fatality in mk4 but unlike Liu Kang, they haven't exhausted that idea yet.

While I'm with Kenny in that the Phoenix doesn't really fit Liu Kang. He's always been a dragon, and should remain so even in the new era. I'm gonna disagree with him that it's Li Mei, however. The peak at the top of the head seems to be more in line with Ashrah than Li Mei. I think the constable is gonna be something like a Lion or other animal that evokes order and strength. Now, what about Sindel? I know she's not in the expansion, but she should still be getting one, right? I'm thinking a spider - Giant Black Widow would be obvious, or maybe an Australian Funnel Web spider.

Netherrealm...DO NOT GIVE US A DRAGON!!!! That has been done to death (pun intended). The Dragon Animality existed before Animalities. It was the inspiration for Animalities. It even appeared in 2 of the 3 films. Dragons even appear in 2 Fatalities already in the game (Liu Kang and Li Mei). Enough with the dragon already.
