The haters will say, "what a lame video, duh, I knew this stuff." To them I say, "SHUT UP!" I have been a woodworker for nearly 60 years in one form or another (kid robbing scrap piles from houses being built in the 1950's, carpenter doing framing and finish work, cabinet maker, you name it. But until last week the scroll saw that was given to me sat atop a stand in my woodworking shop with a broken blade and would occasionally receive a nasty glance from me with the veiled thought, "if eyes were knives," well you get it. Now because you took the time to present the basics I have a pack of blades being delivered tomorrow and I will know EXACTLY what to do with them and will add scroll sawing to my bag of tricks after some set-up and practice. Thank you Kenny, you are exactly what I needed to start something new. Your work here is very much appreciated.

Well thank you very much for the kind words this morning Dan. I truly appreciate them. I produce this weekly show with one thought in mind and that thought is, that as long as the show helps one person then it was worth all the time and effort that it takes to film, edit and post it. I don't monetize the show so my viewers aren't subjected to advertisements and because I don't monetize the show, I don't make a dime from it and have no desire to. I do it because I love what I do and I love helping others by sharing what I know. I hope that you have some good luck with the scroll saw but just remember, that it takes practice. There are a couple of scroll saw for beginners videos on my channel as well as a show on scroll saw blades and their purpose and limitations. Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have along the way and I will do my best to answer them to the best of my ability. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for taking the time to leave me a comment. I truly appreciate that.

I agree wholeheartedly, Dan. I have a fair sized shop. In it can be found two high end bandsaws, one for scrolling and one for re-sawing. Also found there is a cabinet saw, 4'x6' carving machine, over-arm router, drum, disk, spindle and flat sanders, two lathes, about eleven routers, three dust collectors and on and on. Though I've been making sawdust since around 72 and have done a lot of things others haven't, it remains I, like others, haven't done a lot of things others have. I'd never so much as touched a lathe before a couple years ago, so knew nothing of operating one. Now I can say I've got several miles on one and have done unique things others haven't. The scroll saw, strange little machine that it is, was foreign to me too, but unlike the lathe and though I bought my first [used] Hegner about ten or so years ago, I've never really taken advantage of it. I, like Kenny and others, enjoy sharing. I dislike imbecilics who mock other for not knowing something they claim to know. In fact, a while back a fellow was mocking those who didn't know how to run a drill press in metal. Because of my dislike for bullies like him, I took no small amount of pleasure holding him out for his ignorance regarding my woodwork, copper plating, granite work, electronics and, of course, law. So, thank you Kenny, and the likes of Dan for his defense of fine work.

Great instructions Kenny I told my wife to pay close attention and I hope she did. Seven years ago I bought her (on her request) a second scroll saw for the shop. She puttered with it for maybe an hour and couldn't keep the stock down on the up lift of the blade. She got scared of it and has less than two hours total on the new saw now. She knows I like watching your channel and respect you as a woodworker with skill so maybe now I can get her out into the shop with me. Did I say that I enjoyed the video? Well I did. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the show Frank. While most woodworkers find the shop to be a place of masculinity and testosterone, I rather enjoy it when my wife comes out to work on a project. There's something special about sharing your passion with the person that you already share everything with. I hope that your wife does, in fact, get back at the scroll saw and that she excels at it. As I've always offered to everyone on my show, you wife is more than welcome to ask me any questions that she would like if she has problems with her scrolling that you are unable to guide her through. Please encourage her to get back at it. I would love to see some of her creations.

@@acutabove_woodworkings Thank you for responding. l just ordered a scroll saw. I have not received it yet. Once l start using it l believe l would have more questions. In the meantime, l saw someone using the saw to cut coins and l want to use it to cut dried coconut shell. Would a special blade be needed to do those or can the same blade used on wood be used for metal and coconut shell?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 3 жыл бұрын
@@babysaho9576 Coconut shells can be cut using any blade that you would normally use for cutting wood. While I have had some success with cutting metal using blades designed for wood cutting, you may want to research some metal cutting blades in your area. They are designed for cutting metal and are made of a higher strength steel so you wont break as many. Also something to keep in mind, you need to turn your scroll saw down to a very slow speed to cut metal. Otherwise, the blade will heat up too much and break. I hope this helps.

There's no trick for that Peter. Unfortunately, it's all about practice and experience. Being mindful of you actions at the saw can help immensely but paying attention to your feed direction and speed as apposed to just concentrating on following the pattern. Spray adhesive is too expensive now. $12 or $13 a can at Home Depot and you rarely get through an entire can before it gums up...I just use blue tape.

Elmer's spray adhesive has skyrocketed in price and Home Depot doesn't carry Elmer's product any longer for the most part. I don't venture through Home Depot's doors any longer because I don't work there and have no intention of having to go through the self checkout. I still think that the spray adhesive is the best bang for the buck though. I keep the spray can nozzles stored in a jar of mineral spirits (or paint thinner) and it keeps them clean an unclogged every time I use them. Absolutely zero waste this way. I hope this helps a little. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

I find that I get the best control with my fingers close to the blade. A scroll saw is extremely forgiving in that even if your finger do contact the blade, while you may get a little scratch, it won't remove fingers like a table saw. Thank you. I learned scrolling from my Dad back in the '60's, on a heavy cast-iron saw with a steel-spring "upper arm" which was (in retrospect) terrible, but even then we learned to keep the feed rate low, and it worked. Got myself a much better Craftsman about 20 years ago, and it worked fine. One thing I learned on the Craftsman, and never see mentioned on these new-fangled "videos", is to use the Variable-Speed feature to "dial in" a speed that makes the saw run smooth; the resonance of the saw. Other speeds (both higher and lower) would result in the saw vibrating, sometimes badly! I would dial in a smooth run, and then adjust my feed rate to match the speed of the saw. Is this normal, or is something out of whack on my particular saw?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say if it is normal or not. Every saw is manufactured differently and every saw has its quirks. That being said, I've never heard of a saw whose vibration was controllable via speed control. It's usually something out of balance that would cause vibration and so I think there may be other issues at play here in your saw. Without more information, it's really hard to judge. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

It has mashed my fingers so bad they bleed when the blade lifts the stock. Im very appreciative to have it since its a give me,but man its a beast. Another thing for beginners,if they are like i was,i went to lowes and asked for a number 5 blade,they looked at me like i was stupid,they go by tpi where i buy mine. I still don't know what the numbers mean as far as tpi. I just use same concept as a bandsaw blade,more tpi more curve,less tpi thicker stock,less curve. thanks for sharing kenny

@acutabove_woodworkings

A scroll saw could very easily cut shapes in plywood but the blade will change, depending on what thickness of plywood you are using. For 1/4" thick, I would be using a #2 or a #3 blade. For 1/2" plywood, I would use a #3 or a #5 blade and for 3/4" thick plywood, I would be using a #7 blade or a #9 or #12 blades. All of these blades would be reverse tooth blades and they would all be PGT (precision ground tooth) if possible. I hope this helps. If you need extra information about the different blades, you could check out my other video on blade selection for the scroll saw. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3iZhGiqpt1pmKs

Good for you for jumping right in there with both feet and giving this a try. The biggest difference between a sewing machine and the scroll saw is that with a scroll saw, there is blade drift and deflection through wood grain and other naturally occurring factors. I used to turn the can upside down to prevent the nozzle from clogging but I have since stopped using that method Wendy. I found that it wasted too much glue and eventually, the nozzle clogged anyway. I have a new method that I have been using for years and it works amazingly well. I describe that method in my Tips and Tricks episode 7 and you can find that episode here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpS6lY2nZ9KXas0 If you are not interested in viewing the whole program, the spray adhesive tip starts at the 11:35 mark so you can just scan forward to that point. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to help if I can. Good luck with your scrolling.

Excellent video. Just what a beginner needs. I've just ordered the Dremel MS20 moto saw. I originally wanted a mini rip saw for my modelling but thought that this Dremel would tease me into a new hobby at the same time. I was somewhat disappointed when you said that you shouldn't use a fence to create a straight line cut. I'm guessing the drift is because the blade may have a chamfer on one side ?? If the wood is thin enough i.e. 3mm and it's pushed through on such a small point of contact I'm not understanding why it would drift. Looks like I'll have to wait till it's delivered and try it out and see the effect. I've just bought 20KGs of scrap offcuts of ply, mdf and other stock for peanuts and will be practising on these until I get the hang of it. Other than freehand how can I cut a straight line ???
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 жыл бұрын
Not all blades drift Richard and when it comes to a scroll saw, you very well may have good luck using some sort of fence setup but with the inconsistency of the blades, I wouldn't want to count on it. For model building, the best way to cut a straight line that I have found is to free hand it and cut, ever so slightly outside the line. You can then use sandpaper mounted to a piece of 3/4" thick MDF and flatten and fine tune that line. It gives great results and with the smaller pieces of a model build, it is less aggressive and provides the opportunity to get more precise fitting pieces. I hope this helps. Good luck with your new saw and thanks for tuning in.

Lol! rehabbed an old delta. Beautiful machine. But it didn't work for me. Posted on Craigs List. People came from a fair distance, The woman started the saw and just ripped through some practice pieces. They bought the saw! Told them "glad to be your mechanic." Now I'd like to do better, with new 21 inch saw, and this tutorial has some great tips! Thanks!

How do you get such tight intricate cuts? I have a WEN scroll saw and I try to turn around a corner and my blade won’t cut it. I have broken a lot of blades. How do I pivot a curve without braking a blade? Am I using the wrong blade? I am cutting 1/4 MDF....what blade should I use???
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 жыл бұрын
For 1/4" MDF, I would be using a #2 or a #3 reverse tooth blade. Anything larger than that will most likely bind and snap. Another common cause of blade breakage is applying too much pressure when cutting. It is very important to allow the blade to do the work. Applying extra force in order to cut the stock only reduces control and exerts unnecessary stress on the blade. I have an episode on my channel outlining the different blades and their uses. Although it is a longer video (39 minutes) it is time well spent in helping with your blade selection. Here's a link to that show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3iZhGiqpt1pmKs I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and I will do my best to answer them. Thank you for tuning in to the show.

You're very welcome Scott. Don't give up. Giving up would deny you of one of the most relaxing forms of woodworking there is. Take your time, practice and more importantly, have fun. It seems like an easy sort of thing to do. After all, how hard could it be right? It's just like a sewing machine. Not even close. This is much harder than it looks and it takes hours of dedication and work to get good at it. Good luck with your learning and if you have any questions along the way, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to help you out if I can. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Thank you for this. It is a good refresher for me. I tried working with a scroll saw some time back and am getting back to it. I do have a question. Considering how much fine particles this work produces, is it best to use breathing protection when using a scroll saw?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 ай бұрын
I will be completely honest here Sandie. For many years while scrolling, I never wore any kind of protection as far as respiratory health is concerned. It was only after filming my show in 4K that I noticed exactly how many particles were floating around while scrolling and once I saw that, I decided that I would no longer scroll without a mask. So the short answer is, yes, it's always a good practice to wear a dust mask while scrolling. Scroll saws are not known for their dust collection abilities and their inherent lack of dust collection makes them a perfect candidate for PPE. I use Base Camp masks and love them. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for taking the time to ask your question. It's appreciated.

Blade drift is caused by improper tension. I have that exact saw and I can get almost 90 degree cuts using a clamped on stock. The blade has to be moving at its top speed. Its dangerous to do this and you should not be doing it with hard or thick material. My test was done with pine at about 1/4" thickness. The blade I used was large and had just under 1/8" width from teeth to back. The thicker the blade the less drift. If your going to cut things that need to have a strait edge then you should get a small band saw to do that. I have a bandsaw in the shop so what I did was only testing the saw capabilities.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 жыл бұрын
Everyone's methods are different in the shop Steven. A bandsaw is also a tool that is meant to cut curves and mostly, will not provide a clean, crisp edge when cutting straight lines. A table saw is better suited for this but if the bandsaw is your tool of preference, then by all means, use the bandsaw. I won't deny that improperly tensioned blades can be a source of drift, but it is, by no means the only source and there are many factors that can cause blade drift. If the scroll saw was meant to cut straight lines, it would come with a fence. It's usually best practice to use the tool for its intended purpose. With 30 years of scrolling experience under my belt, I can definitely say that I've seen my share of blade drift causes. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your opinion and your test results. It's appreciated.

Thank you for the lesson. I bought a Wen scroll saw a year ago and have used it alot. I do know I would like to upgrade and have bee reading up on the King Industrial Excelsior scroll saw or the Dewalt. What brand of blade do you use, I have looked at Lee valley and they have the reverse tooth blade you mention but not in the small sizes . Thank you for the great content, really appriciate all the detail you share.

I prefer to use Olson blades Brian. In particular, I like the Olson, PGT blades. They provide a nice clean cut with smooth edges that really don't need any sanding. I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not, but the King Industrial Excelsior scroll saw is basically the General International Excalibur. The design and the rights to the manufacturing were sold to King by General International so they started manufacturing the saw using the exact same specs as the Excalibur but changed the name. The Excalibur is no longer in production. The DeWalt DW788 is also a nice saw and I worked on one for many years before upgrading to the Excalibur. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for tuning in.

What are your thoughts about releasing the pressure / tension on the blade when you are not using the blade at the end of the day for instance? I recently watched a scrollsawer on another KZbin channel state that is good practice to loosen (not taking the blade out of the upper or lower blade holder) the blade by simply releasing that pressure by flipping the switch like, for instance, on a saw like yours. In his opinion to leave the tension on the saw could cause too much pressure on the blade, causing it to stretch too much. Also keeping the tension on the machine could, over time, cause the bearings on the saw's rocker or head areas, to have flat spots on these bearings. Your thoughts?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 11 ай бұрын
I release the tension on all my tools when they are not in use John. The scroll saw is the same. Tensions on machines can gain a memory and that is the last thing you want. Always release the tension on any tool that you use in the shop when not in use. Band saw blades, scroll saw, belt sanders, drum sanders, table saw fences, drill press tables, etc. It will go a long way to prolonging your tool's life. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
