This song makes me think about how important a father is. I never thought a dad was an important thing. I didn't have a dad. Now I am a dad, and you better believe I try to be the best dad I can be. Protective, loving and supportive. Strong and stable as a rock. Honest and Dependable. That's the father I hope I am to my daughter.

@@elmurcyperezaguilar1001 i find this ironic hearing this song now ,, i'm almost 50 and it nearly word for word chronicles events that happened in my youth ,,,I was tommy ,,and the gatlin boys were known as the hicks brothers that terrorized my county throughout the late 80s and most of the 90s ,,the incident that led to their downfall was them beating up my then boyfriend in 1997 ,,it ended with a barroom fight in the dining room of the local pizza hut ,,3 of them VS me with a 3 foot crowbar i was 23 at the time and i am 6ft tall and built like a gorilla ,,not 1 of them is smaller than me ,, the fight lasted 15 minutes and ended with the last one falling just as the local PD arrived something i'm not proud of but it needed to be done,,not 1 of the hicks boys has said a word to me in the 28 years since , johnny , jim and jeremy the youngest one ,, jim died in a work place accident 10 years later , jeremy died in a DUI crash in 2020 ,,and johnny ,the last one that fell he hasn't been right in the head since he got hit with that crowbar all those years ago

My grandfather always played this song in the truck, while we were on the way to feed and count the cattle. He died in 2020, and it tears me up inside that I didn't listen to his advice or the advice in this song. I enlisted in the Army when I turned 17, and made a career as a martial arts instructor by 21. It just hit me that I've built a life surrounded by violence, and I could have had a more peaceful life up to this point.
@Bee-mw5jt
@Bee-mw5jt 10 ай бұрын
I may be some stranger on the internet, but I just want to say you don’t have to be ashamed of it. I don’t know if such a life means you were fighting just for the sake of fighting. In this song, Tommy waited for a really good reason before fighting, and as a martial arts instructor you’d probably know more than I that learning these skills are so you can protect things - to walk away from trouble when you can, but to make the trouble stop when you need to use force. I’m sure you could still make your grandfather proud if you remember the advice going forward - knowing how to fight, and choosing not to, says a lot more about a person than you might think.

You built a life to be prepared for violence and thought others the same. Sounds pretty damn admiral to me.
@ArthurRex131

Your life is not a life centered around violence at all. Joining the military is a noble profession and is about more than just combat. As someone who took martial arts for years, as well, I can honestly say that you've done more to PREVENT violence by teaching that than many other people have. It's because I took martial arts that I was able to control my violent impulses and avoid fights rather tahn lash out and start them when people get me angry. you've lead a more peaceful life than you think you have.

Damn you, Kenny Rogers, lol! Why do I always start bawling when Tommy takes down his Daddy's picture? The line about locking the door is so cool and appropriate. I've always loved that line! Such a simple way for the lyricist to convey that "It's On Now, Mofo!" The guy who said there's no way not to get goosebumps when he turns and locks the door is so right. I get 'em every time.

It’s hard to not sin as our father’s did. Especially when we inherit their nature of anger. Every boy, teenage boy, man experienced something like this; bullying, and always wanting to be violent in order to get revenge, But that’s just it. You never always have to fight to defend your pride. You never always have to be the “strongest“ person in the room; I love Tommy’s character in this song. He taught me to fight for what’s right, my honor; and the honor of those weaker than me. To be strong, not compensate for myself, but to be strong for others when they aren’t strong themselves. Kenny is the best man.

@@always_markb No, it is not, First, nobody was murdered, a Rape was part of the story, and the main theme, as a pacifist, they, the Townfolk (untruthfully) labeled him as The Coward of the County, because he refused to figure fight, and yet he proved otherwise. This ballad contains a parable and truism, the Bible tells you to turn the other cheek, "It won't mean you're weak when you turn the other cheek." But sometimes, you gotta fight when you're a Man ( Woman ) You did not understand this song or the moral of it.

The older you get you realize some of the things your parents told you weren't because they were being mean, it was them trying to prevent you from doing what they did. My Dad has always had it rough since he was born, and he's always stood to avoid doing what his parents did. Nonetheless people still dislike my father, and hold bitterness. The older I've gotten, I've understood my Dad and this song here reminds me of everything he's always told me to stand by. I guess that's why I always tear up every time I give it a listen.

These kids and young adults wouldn't understand the kind of love Kenny sings about here. These were the days Dads words and love was the world, His love for His girl Becky? Defending Honor? these young adults are so insecure, they don't fist fight, they shoot or stab ya, the true cowards. They text the girl they are with even when she is only across the table. They love thier phones. These days are gone. But for I ? well I understand where your understanding and emotion comes from.Peace

He was a "real" sorta guy. He wrote all sorts of songs, and while some were just fluff, he had these gems like this one to prove what he could do. This song doesn't need a complicated mixing. It doesn't need more instruments in general. It doesn't even really need the music at all. It's the story of a beaten man finally standing up, and not only that, but standing up for a _damn good reason._ Sure, he promised his Dad. But there's times where you have to fight to be a man. Good fucking song. Rest in peace, Kenny. You did well.
