I’m a Kyokushin practitioner but I have HIGH RESPECT to American Kenpo including 5.0. First heard about it when I watched The Perfect Weapon and actually visited some Kenpo schools in LA on one of my visits to The US. And I would like to train in American Kenpo but unfortunately, such was not available here in The Philippines.

I love the bashers and crap talkers on this feed! You should never bash or look down on any of the defense art forms. It will always be the student who makes the most out of the art and their particular training. The "this stuff doesn't work" comments are my favorite. You are absolutely correct. Doing 30 movements to a guy who only throws one punch is extremely unlikely. However, learning how to make those strikes flow and to practice is very important. Most kenpo practitioners know this. There aren't any delusions going on. It's practicing. How many times have you faced an opponent in the street who fought you with punching pads and a padded helmet. I'm going to guess, never. However, you train with such an opponent, right? Yes, there are many things that are involved with traditional martial arts that do not necessarily "work" in the street. There are more things to learn than just brawling. Which means, most of the people that are extremely negative on these types of feeds are just that, brawlers. No respect for tradition. No respect for the fellow artist. Which means they carry no respect, and should receive no respect. You don't like it? Great, don't watch it and don't practice it. No one is begging for your approval. Over the years, I've had tons of disrespectful, non-believing, brawlers walk into the studio. They all have had their comments and have been very open to express their opinions. Then we spar and next thing I know they are signing up for lessons. A nice 1,2,3 with a quick leg kick in less about a second is typically a great way to shut the mouth up. Then I get the, "but that's kickboxing, not kenpo". Wrong! I've only ever studied kenpo. Getting punched in the face hurts no matter what art it's derived from.

You have to admit that a lot of students in this video are obviously doing the movements from the kata without knowing why. Wearing the black belt without being competent in the art could be said to be disrepectful of tradition across disciplines. I liked the ground fighting they were doing. It seemed more purposeful. It was horrible BJJ, but they do this for defense(or assault, if you look at Larry Tatum), not sport. I'm still very critical of these long combinations. I've never seen an alert opponent that got hit and then didn't cover their head with their hands, regardless of context and skill. The brawler story is a pretty big strawman. Muay thai or BJJ does not care who believes or does not believe or who has respect. It just works. If this is choreography for the sake of being beautiful, they should advertise that better.

All you 2 clowns have shown is that you don't know what you are talking about. You don't understand the mechanics of Kenpo 5.0 or the way in which it is taught. Let me see if I can make it simple for you... take the strikes and sparring training of Kyokushukin Karate and throw a couple of custom strikes in for good measure. Add ground fighting from BJJ but with the competition rules removed... elbows and eyegouging are part of the curriculum. Then encourage individual inventiveness with the training by altering the technique lines, forcing the student to "adapt or die." But you know what don't take my word for it... get to a class yourself and see. I dare you.

This is an absolute joke,there are black belts there who can barely lift their leg and completely out of shape,always the same with kenpo.the sparring is the only practical thing in the test and what do you see,extremely bad kickboxing and novice level grappling with no contact and zero kenpo techniques or strategy.when kickboxer or grapplers spar they use the basic techniques theyve been taught from day 1

Hello! I have the invitation for the event in July. (19-22) I am curious to attend. I have not been in Kenpo for a while because here in AZ it is hard to find, or a really long drive (North to South Phx about 23mi one way). But, my question for you is will it be worth it??? I don't want it to be too many people/too much to where you can't really make some good connections. Thx.

Thank you for posting this. I took Kenpo as an older teen and it never let me down. I look back with fondness to the punch / kick to the gut that I received for belt ceremony. Kenpo got me some respect among the football players and put some bullies in their place. It served me well later in my 20's in various situations such as warehouse conflicts. It confuses and scares the crap out of people with the flurry of body slapping that provides the momentum to unleash lightning fast, furious energy. I have always loved it because it is vicious. It like a feral cat jumping on a person and ripping the sh*t out of that person so that they need stiches and a rabies shot. Women definately should add Kenpo to their anti-Trump techniques. :D I am going to look into getting back into Kenpo. Got to say however ... karate uniforms suck. The Gi is revolting to me and it only makes fat people look fatter. There has to be some uniform better. With that kind of attitude to the uniform, I would be the black sheep of the Kenpo class.

Well since no one who has actually practiced has answered I will. The forms are simply individual movements strung together. When used in the real world you will have to adapt to you opponent, situation, surroundings etc. The movements are your tools. Think of it as each small movement as a word and the more words you know the more sentences you can make. The Techniques or katas are to show your understanding of the forms, they are not to be copied exactly in real life situations. Hopefully that helps you understand.

I mean, you can learn Kenpo with anything like that, and there are lots of major systems out there. The Ed Parker system, Tracy's (basically the same thing), UKKF (in my experience, a good system), and 5.0 like shown here. Find any one like them as they're pretty credible and I'm sure you can work something out.

Yeah, they are trying. I train in a different system but more or less, most kenpo students and schools are trying to hammer home ground fighting into the self defense regime. Personally, I don't dislike the idea, but in order to meet the standards of "good" self-defense by the general MA community, you need allot more training than the older systems asked of you.

A flawed system imo. The problem with emphasizing speed and volume over technique and power. I have coached boxing for ten years and can tell you these black belts would not fare well against even most novice boxers, ie one year or so experienced. I instruct Tae Kwon Do as well. A style very close to the ITF system. The kicking in this video from the high ranking black belts is mediocre. The lower ones, absolutely horrible. That being said, I have seen some good martial artists who claim Kenpo as their base. But they all cross trained in either boxing, TKD, kickboxing, etc. Many martial arts contain some valid elements of other effective styles. A grain or two of legitimacy helps when perpetuating a lie.
@grayalun
@grayalun 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not a Kenpo guy but an ITF Taekwondo guy and the biggest issue I can see albeit looking from the outside is Kenpo seems to be deliberately diverse allowing you to tailor it to your style depending on what you're better at be it kicking, grappling, self defence elements and so on. Biggest issue I see is some of these guys in the video appear jacks of all trades but masters of none as you say some of the kicking is not great, I can't help but feel they'd be better served focusing one area long term before training the next rather than trying to learn too many things at once and being meh at them. Most other MA focuses on one core element a lot, Taekwondo on kicking, boxing on punching, BJJ on submissions. I believe most MMA guys have a base art that's their bread and butter wrestling, BJJ, Thai Boxing and they work gradually to improve the weaker areas of their game building on their wesker aspects while maintaining their base art. I've rambled a bit but you most likely get the gist.

I have no problem with karate. However, orchestrated self defense is not self defense. It's a Musical Performance. Like WWE. That's what pisses me off about traditional karate.
@SenseiGerryValido
@SenseiGerryValido 8 жыл бұрын
Sir, by your comment, I'll take a guess that you aren't an American Kenpoist. You are correct that orchestrated self defense techniques are not self defense. In American Kenpo, these are what you might think of as templates of movement. They are training tools. Everyone in American Kenpo knows that you will NOT be able to pull off an entire self defense technique in an actual fight. What these techniques teach us, among other things, are sequential flow of motion, target acquisition, anatomical positioning and body manipulation of the opponent, timing, and so much more. The idea is that in a real situation, the Kenpoist's ability to recognize the opponent's body positioning and movement dictate how we will hit next---and all this happens in seconds, or fractions thereof. So, yes--this is NOT self defense, it is OUR method of learning self defense--based on logic, and principles of motion. Thanks for watching.
@Rizaldjohan
@Rizaldjohan 7 жыл бұрын
to Gerry Valido: all you mention including flow of motion and correct timing can only be tested if we can respond to an attack without knowing what type of attack is coming and when it is coming. I am sure you are all great guys, but if we can see the sparring section in this video that your methods failed to be applied in a free fight. You might be able to fight on the streets using your power, speed, agility guts and confidence but many many people who understand martial arts know that your trained techniques can be applied in real situation. It's like squeezing a dry orange, you get so little juice and only more pulp. The world of MMA has open the eyes of many martial artists that whatever the art is, they all come down to the same principles of moves, kinetics, timing, and body mechanics. American Kenpo is almost the only one that show it does not. For example how you generate power of your punch, you use the power from a slap to your own body? that's ridiculous. I learned kyokushin, a little bit of boxing, muaythai and shorinji kempo and they all teach the same. That's why their randori are smooth and is not messy like American Kenpo's. AK is the only big martial arts that does not show a set of solid techniques by technicality. The way you block without evading/moving to the opposite direction of the block is one of proof how silly and indifferent your style is. Master Parker seem to develop his art in front of a mirror, alone. Without any inputs from others. This is where he seemed to 'assume' street condition and real fight, not be able to apply it realistically. His claims of streets fight might be true but people heavily doubt that he used any of AK techniques in those. Fortunately Mr. Speakman, Mr Mills etc have tried to further advance the art to a more dynamic version such as Kempo 5.0, but it cannot move too far from the shaky principles inherited from Mr. Parker. Only my two cents. Apologies if it's too criticising, I hope it aspires you to develop more AK as it is already a big organization. I can be wrong but i believe many martial artists outside AK agrees with me.

one criticising person invited to an event with hundreds of guys? and that's how you want to prove legitimacy of your art? :) they want to oblige me with a lesson, so you mean they would collectively pound on me? :))

I'm not defending American Kenpo in relation to other arts - it comes down to what art works for you and how exactly your instructor teaches. It certainly has it's problems (which is why I think EVERYONE needs to cross-train). But, as far as the slapping yourself part - in 13 years of training I've only met two people that actually touted that idea (and I don't remember it being mentioned much in Mr. Parker's books). I agree with your comment about not moving away from the block - but not all Kenpo is taught the same. Myself and those I train with always try to do two things with a defense. 1) Move the target out of the path of the strike (which often involves moving away from the block). 2) If possible, disrupt your opponents position with your block/parry, or have it naturally lead into a method of doing so. The idea here is to have a backup - if movement fails, hopefully the block works, and vice versa. I was originally taught to step in and rely on the block - but that failed repeatedly and I hardly ever saw anyone able to execute it like that when surprised. Even my instructors always moved away from a strike they were not expecting, in addition to a block. So, I started doing things differently and it worked for me. I also don't understand your comment that American Kenpo does not teach that things come down to the "same principles of moves, kinetics, timing, and body mechanics". That's something I learned from Kenpo long before I cross-trained. I think it's exactly because of that knowledge that cross-training always came easily to me - Kenpo introduced me to so many patterns of movement that I saw Kenpo in everything I went to practice (grappling the least so.... which Kenpo is sorely lacking, generally speaking). The world of martial arts is far too large for generalizations.

why don´t you (and other keyboaed critics) dazzle us with your own martial arts mastery (make a video of yourself performing things that "work") instead of bashing on others who have put in hundreds hours of training to obtain what´s on display here ? that would be so much more productive.. ;-)

@@PETURK I love the TMA fascination with "keyboard masters", as though outperforming a morbidly obese 38th Dan Kempo Triple Red Belt is some sort of superhuman task. (You guys hand out belts like candy. And you know it.) You don't need to be a master or a warrior to recognize that these forms are ridiculous and these static drills against compliant opponents are unrealistic and absurd. A person with three months of boxing or BJJ can poke a million holes in your training. The most rudimentary training in any Alive art immediately qualifies a person to criticize a dead one because the flaws become painfully obvious very, very quickly.

@@LAVATORR You are aware some kenpo schools implement BJJ and ground fighting systems into their curriculum, yes? If you knew some history, before the heavy karate and kung fu influences, it used to be known as kenpo-jiu-jitsu, and the style has the same focus but there was similar emphasis to that style.
@LAVATORR
@LAVATORR 4 жыл бұрын
@@traveller400 I know both those things, and the fact that you see them as defenses is telling. First, who cares what a style "used" to contain if they're not actively practicing it today? There's no such thing as historical osmosis; you get better by training regularly with people that are better than you, not by virtue of the fact 87 years ago someone you never met trained your art totally differently. Second, I'm well aware of Kempoka that train BJJ once a month so they can say they "have" grappling. We call them crapplers and they're often more dangerous than white belts because they tend to devote so little training time to grappling, yet insist they "know" BJJ nonetheless. Points for trying, but if you're gonna cross train, cross train at a proper gym, don't "bring a guy in".

Wow this is funny you see everyone practicing blocking and stuff but in real sparring it’s not used so my question is why practice something that is useless in a real fight . And the ground game is sloppy too gonna give someone the wrong idea and get them hurt .

not at all, Kenpo is very effective in street fighting agree with George above though, in that I don't believe cross training would hurt a serious artist. Kenpo saved my skin on more then one occasion and I only made it as far as a green belt, but I got my head knocked off at least twice by men that were skilled in western boxing. I do believe it is still evolving, and would recommend it as a practical form. WWE is fake, but I'm guessing sarcasm.
