I have a 2nd degree in this style. I will say, now that I have have practiced mixed martial arts for several years after receiving that honor, that about 30% of the system is actually street effective. The basics are strong and I have used some of the techniques from this style in real life scenarios that has saved me from serious harm. The takeaway is that this is not a fake martial art. Embellished? Yes. Effective? Definitely.

there's a lot of stuff in kenpo that can be "not so effective," but in my experience kenpo is one of the most practical arts ever created IF you're training to actually fight with it...a lot of the cross-walking and things like that aren't very practical, but using the striking mechanics and patterns of kenpo in the context of something like MMA can be absolutely devastating...but you're right, there's definitely some pseudoscience that gets espoused - especially on a move like lone kimono, where they say the under-arm strike will break the elbow...in most cases, it won't, not even close lol...but again, kenpo revolutionized my entire approach to martial arts and while i mix a LOT of other stuff in, everything i do is firmly rooted in the principles of speed, power, and body mechanics i learned in kenpo...i may roll into a hammer fist instead of a psiform strike, or a back knuckle versus a crane's beak, but the mechanics are still functionally the same

I keep watching Kempo videos and it feels like doing a wordsearch trying to find the hidden good parts. I will admit that training a reaction to a movement with a combination and training your body to respond with speed is good - but 9/10 kempo combinations involve the attacker going comatose for six seconds while standing like a scarecrow. I see it as being about 10% effective but I have done very little Kempo- Can you tell me some resources so can find the other missing 20% of effectivness you are referring to? I am especially interested in the super close quarter power. I am not at all impressed with making extra noise with a gi or with my mouth for theatrics. Thanks

@@drfistface check out akki.com. closest to the kenpo origin you can get is with Mr. Mills. He moves just like Mr. Parker and has been able to reproduce the same in his students. They have several videos in their channel linked from their page. He and several of his students battle tested every thing they teach working as bouncers in bars for decades. Highly effective--even better motion than what's been shown in this video.

And the sparring is atrocious. If they went harder and used punches and n boxing blocks I'd say it be effective sparring, but they want to play freezetag

@Jay Ryan it means they are a training partner, and are going through the technique for form. Free form sparring is very messy, realistic but messy, and is too consuming to try basic positions. This is why even in BJJ these moves are taught positionally first, before students are allowed to roll.

I recognize the continuous strikes and counter (flow) strikes as Kenpo but leaving the arms open or extended does not look like Ed Parker Kenpo to me. Also, my own teacher came out of his system in the 60's & 70's, and the weak pulled strikes here were not part of it. The Kenpo I experienced from my teacher was HARD and serious even in drills and sparring. The principles are there in this video but the application or delivery is not honest at all. Hard impact training is a fundamental hallmark of Parker Kenpo and is one reason those OGs were not someone to mess with. Its lacking here

You actually got it backwards, Ed Parker was a established Famous Martial Artist. Bruce Lee was relatively new to the US and unknown untill he asked Mr. Parker if he could demonstrate his style at Ed Parkers long Beach Internationals. .. Bruce Lee is a noted "Film Star", Ed Parker is a noted Martial Artist / Instructors, don't let your obvious emotional attraction for Bruce Lee cloud the facts. If anyone should feel Priveliged & Fortunate" it should be Bruce Lee & his admirers for GM Ed Parkers recognition.

I love kenpo. It is a very beautiful system. It is very fun. I have studied many arts over 25 years and kenpo has been one of my favorites. With that said it is almost a useless system. It is easy to become delusional about your ability based on how good you look in trainng. Everytime you see kenpo guys training vs sparring there is a crazy difference. When training they are fast and accurate and do all the fancy movement. When they spar even at high belt levels they look like 6 year olds in a tae kwon do class and they use no e of the fancy techniques.. Because as stated its mostly useless. You should train and perfect what works and what you use when sparring which is foot work, timing, distance, body and head movement, punching, kickicking, knees and elbows. All the rest of the time you are just wasting time at perfecting useless movement therefore kenpo is mostly useless.
