I remember seeing a scene from the BTAS era where Batman broke into a crime lord's house and was looking for something. A couple of goons were patrolling. One of them opens the door after hearing a noise and sees Batman in the darkened room. Batman is just standing there with a "your move" attitude. The goon turns to his partner, states that the room is empty, closes the door, and leaves. THAT is a smart goon.

I see it more as an intimidation tactic this time. Those guys are little more than thugs with weapons. No real warriors. It was a way for him to send the message of "I'm being polite by giving you a way out that you can explain off as being generous, but I'll fight and floor every single man here if I have to." Pretty easy choice for boss man. The former he could sweep under the rug. The latter will leave him and the syndicate he runs a laughing stock - Taken down in just a few minutes by one man they didn't even know the name of.
@AAC19902 жыл бұрын
I've been re-watching this series and I never noticed how poignant this scene is. Kenshin's past is still truly a mystery, but the bits and pieces we get show how deadly, fearsome, vicious and monstrous he truly was. A small time mob boss, probably never actually held a sword a day in his life can recognize the depth and severity of being in the presence of a hitokiri.

The boss was the only one with brains and knowledge in the bunch. He looked Kenshin in the eyes and knew exactly what eyes like that meant. He knew Kenshin had killed before, in a manner more casual than he could breath, and countless men at that. Neither he or his men were in mortal peril since Kenshin was not going to kill any of them, but that wasn't something he knew. He knows someone with eyes like that has a supreme level of skill and they can kill at will. Boss man had probably two dozen plus guys go at him and Kenshin defeated every one of them without trying and without killing them, even though he was easily capable of it. All that over a boy they had minimal investment in and a woman they had essentially no involvement with. "Shit! He's already defeated most of my men nonfatally! If I decide to be a hard ass about this and throw what I have left at him he'll get serious and put those and anyone else that opposes him six feet under! This guy is getting what he wants because we can't match him and he can and will kill as many men as he has to in order to get it! The only question remaining is how many more is he going to have to put face down on the floor knocked out or dead before he does... This isn't worth it... The kid is a small loss and we have nothing tied up in the woman... Take them both! Just leave!"

Come to think of it, discounting the ability to kill swiftly and retreating without a trace, what exactly is it about a hitokiri that makes him more dangerous than other samurai or swordsmen? Aren't they all killers?
@duffboy5023 жыл бұрын
The "hitokiri" were sort of especial agents employed by political figures (the guys that would end up composing the Meiji government). Not only their kills had a highly political motive, their abilities should be equal to none. And as the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu style has the most OP techniques of all, Kenshin and everyone else called a "Hitokiri", like Shishio and Jin-e , are on a league of their own.
