Hi. With either version of the Hakone Free Pass, it covers unlimited rides between Odawara Station and Hakone-Yumoto Station on the Hakone Tozan Train. Once you reach Odawara Station, you are within the covered area for unlimited rides. Most people who are coming from Shinjuku Station will ride the train all the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station, rather than getting off at Odawara. @@lilyrawat245

Hi. Since you have a JR Pass, you can use that to take a Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Odawara Station. Thanks for wanting to use our link, but you don't really need the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku. Once you arrive at Odawara Station, you can purchase a Hakone Free Pass that includes only the Hakone area. From Odawara you can take a train to Hakone-Yumoto, which is already covered by the pass. Yep! Drop off luggage in Gora. Then cable car, ropeway to volcanic valley, sightseeing boat across lake Ashi. Then you could either take a bus to Hakone-Yumoto Station and then train to Gora, OR you could back track and cross the lake again with the sightseeing boat, ride the ropeway again, and take the cable car to Gora. We stayed in an Airbnb near Iriuda Station (one stop from Hakone-Yumoto). It was a nice 2 bedroom place. But it was located up a steep hill! Our kids loved the Open Air Museum. We spent a whole day there. They also enjoyed glass blowing at Crafthouse in Gora Park. We also visited the Natural History Museum, since we were a short walk away. And of course, the sightseeing loop mentioned in this video. Going to an onsen is one thing we didn’t fit into this trip. And I would have liked visiting more museums. 🌺 Heidi

One of crazy thing about their online ticketing is how taxing to buy multiple tickets for your family group, they were assuming each individual hold a smartphone and capable to purchase hakone freepass with their credit cards, and the only workaround to do so is a person buy the ticket multiple time and transfer it individually to registered smartphone, what a hassle!

Hi. You will want a 3-Day Hakone Free Pass, if you plan to use it to get from Shinjuku to Hakone on March 1st and from Hakone to Shinjuku on March 3. Each day counts as a day, no matter what time you start using it. The 3-day pass is only slightly more expensive than the 2-day pass. If you are planning to purchase or pick-up the Hakone Free Pass in person at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station, it's best to do it at least a day in advance. Otherwise your start time will be delayed, as you could be waiting in line for an hour. I plan to go on a 3 day, 2 night trip to Hakone. If I upgrade, will I get 2 tickets--one ticket for the regular trip price plus a second ticket for the Romance Car Express? How do I insert 2 tickets into the entry machine at the Shinjuku station, if they come separately? My second question is whether the upgrade is good for one way or round trip? Hi. You can purchase the Romancecar upgrade (technically called "Limited Express Surcharge") for one direction Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto for 1,200 Yen. If the Hakone Free Pass you receive is the size and shape of a train ticket, you can insert it into the automatic ticket gate as your Base Fare. That may be all you need to insert, and just hold onto the Limited Express Surcharge ticket. If you do need to insert them both, you can stack them together and insert into the automatic ticket gate. Aloha, LOVE your videos! We start our vacation in Hakone. Our flight arrives 5:10 pm and we’ll be there for 5 days total. The first “day” will be spent getting to our studio across from Lake Ashi, day 2 we’ll explore the Lake Ashi area and for the final 3 days we’ll use the 3-day FreePass to follow your loop. A couple questions; Do the buses run into the evening? I want to skip Shinjuku station and find a bus that goes straight from HND to Hakone but the only ones I can find online are at 5:30 and 7:45pm. I think 5:30 is cutting it too close, so the 7:45 should find us in Hakone around 10pm? We’ll need to transfer from wherever the bus drops us. I’m nervous about winging it but will be ok if there are buses we can hop on that late (This also falls on a Saturday). Also, if we purchase the FreePass on Klook but are skipping Shinjuku station, where do we redeem the passes? Any info helps, Mahalo

Aloha! It does take around 2 hours to get from Haneda to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Once at Hakone-Yumoto Station you could catch a taxi. I wouldn't expect there to be buses running at 10pm in Hakone. Things close early there. If you want the Hakone Free Pass that doesn't include round trip from Shinjuku Station, I don't recommend purchasing on Klook. Instead, you can purchase the version of the pass that only includes the Hakone area. You can buy it at either Gora Station or Hakone-Yumoto Station. Hi. If you'd like to take a Shinkansen from Tokyo Station heading towards Hakone, you can ride the Shinkansen to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station you can switch to a local train to get the rest of the way to Hakone-Yumoto Station. This will be faster, but also more expensive, than riding the Romancecar Limited Express train from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. After you are done visiting Hakone, you can back track to Odawara Station. From Odawara Station you can board a Shinkansen to Kyoto. Will you be using a JR Pass or purchasing individual tickets?

Hi. Kawaguchiko is closer to Mt. Fuji and you have a better chance of getting an unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji. From Hakone you can sometimes see Mt. Fuji in the distance, but only if the sky is clear enough. So a day trip to Kawaguchiko would probably be the better option.

There isn't much room on the bus for luggage. There is luggage forwarding available at Hakone-Yumoto Station, if you need to ship your bags to your hotel. Or there are luggage lockers for the day.

Hi. There are two different versions of the Hakone Free Pass. The one we link to includes round trip between Shinjuku and Hakone. Affiliate link: geni.us/hakonefreepass So you can use it both ways, or just one way. If you have that version you could use it just Hakone to Shinjuku. However, this type of pass needs to be picked up at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. The other version does not include transportation to and from Tokyo. It only includes transportation within the Hakone area, starting from Odawara Station. If you plan to buy the Hakone Free Pass in person at Hakone-Yumoto Station, this is likely the version you will get. It's easy to also purchase a Romancecar ticket from Hakone to Shinjuku while at Hakone Yumoto Station. Hope that helps. 🌺 Heidi

There are no reserved seats on the regular local train, which takes 120 minutes from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. Yes, you can complete the Hakone sightseeing loop in one day if you start early in the morning. Train to Hakone-Yumoto, bus to Lake Ashi, sightseeing Pirate ship across the lake, ropeway to Owakudani volcanic valley, cable car down to Gora Station, train back to Hakone-Yumoto and return on evening train to Shinjuku. Hi! The only thing we needed to reserve was the Romancecar from/to Shinjuku. For everything else (pirate ship, ropeway, cable car, etc) we just showed our Hakone Free Passes (which sometimes got stamped) and got right on. We didn’t need to exchange for actual tickets or anything like that. I wanted to visit Yunessun Onsen theme park, but we didn’t have a chance on this trip. Hi. I think that would be fine to take on the train. However, the buses were sometimes standing-room-only for us. That wouldn’t be fun with luggage. Are you planning a day trip to Hakone? If so, you could leave luggage at Shinjuku station. Are you planning to spend a couple nights in Hakone? If so, you could bring your suitcases on the train to Hakone-Yumoto. Hi. Thanks! You could take a Shinkansen from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station to Odawara. That option is faster (about half an hour), but more expensive at around 3,280 Yen. Personally, if I had an active JR Pass, I would take a Shinkansen to Odawara Station. But otherwise, I would use the Hakone Free Pass that includes transportation from Shinjuku and upgrade to the Romancecar for Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (80 minutes). Hi. If you don't want to ride the bus, you can take the Hakone Tozan Train from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Gora Station. Then take the cable car. Then the ropeway. Then the sightseeing ship across lake Ashi. Then repeat everything in reverse: sightseeing ship, ropeway, cable car, Hakone Tozan Train (which zig zags back and forth down the hill). Just make sure you note what time things like the ropeway close, so you get back in time. 🌸 Heidi

Hi. There are two version of the Hakone Free Pass. One version includes round trip Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. However, I think you need to pick up that pass at Shinjuku Station. The other version only includes transportation within the Hakone area. That might be a better option, as you can purchase it a Hakone-Yumoto station when you arrive. You would need to purchase a separate train ticket to return to Shinjuku, which is easy to purchase at Hakone-Yumoto Station. If you have a chance, I highly recommend visiting The Hakone Open Air Museum, located near Gora. Since you are starting from Gora, you could do the sightseeing loop backwards from the way I described in this video. So start by taking the cable car up the hill, then the ropeway to Owakudani and Lake Ashi, then cross Lake Ashi on the Pirate Ship. Then you could take a bus to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where you would catch a train to Shinjuku.

Thank you for the informative video. We were there in Hakone Japan last week, and we purchased the Hakone 2 days freepass from Shinjuku station. What a disappointing trip that was. It doesn't matter if two or three days pass once you return back to Shinjuku station, the freepass can not be reused again. In our case the station staff took away our pass. He said it is done. We were shocked and confused. He showed us a print out of the Hakone freepass with a fine print that said " The Hakone Freepass (including those valid for multiple days) cannot be used after returning to your departure station." We gave up arguing after we read that. Basically the freepass is encourages people to stay in Hakone to fully benefit from it. Which I don't mind at all if I knew this information beforehand I can plan the trip differently. We can't believe this kind of thing will happen in Japan. The whole entire trip in Japan was only positive until this happened. Read the fine print.

I watched a lot of videos before we went to Japan for vacation. Your videos by far are the best and easy to follow, especially the Hakone trip. For all the videos I watch for Hakone freepass it seems no one particularly mentions this rule. Maybe no one realizes there is a rule, once you return where you purchase the Hakone freepass, it becomes useless. It doesn't matter two- or three-day pass. Like you have three days pass for Disney Park if you are not staying in a hotel inside the Disney Park, instant you leave the park to an outside hotel and come back the next morning and realize your pass has been canceled. Can I call Hakone freepass a scam? Or maybe you can purchase the local train for a two-hour ride back to Shinjuku station, not the Romance car train, that way you don't have to show the Hakone freepass to the station staff. Anyway, I think I should put it out there to let everyone know there is a rule they need to know about it. Love your videos.

Hi, We are not sure about luggage restrictions. There could possibly be for the ropeway. We each carried daypack backpacks with us. You might want to ask the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center to double check. The other consideration is that the buses and cable car can be very crowed, standing room only. The route we recommend is Hakone Yumoto Station > Hakone Tozan Bus to Moto Hakone-ko to visit the shrine and torii. Then take the cruise one way to Togendai. Then you will take the ropeway and cable car to Gora. Once in Gora you can take a bus to Gotemba. That's as far towards Mt Fuji as you can get with the Hakone Free Pass. Unless you have other transportation arranged from Lake Ashi? And yes, this is all doable in a day to get you to Mt. Fuji station.

We are traveling from Tokyo to Hakone and staying one night at a Hakone ryokan as a family of 4 ( sons are 28,25 ). Is it possible to do the Hakone Loop in one day including transportation from Tokyo in the morning and be able to get to the ryokan by about 4 pm for check-in? We don't want to be late for our kaiseki dinner.

I think you should be fine if you leave Shinjuku around 9am. Make sure to pick up your Hakone Free Pass ahead of time, so you aren't waiting in line that day. Is your Ryokan near Gora Station? It would be faster to get there than back to Hakone Yumoto-Station. 🌸 Heidi

I just purchased my romance car train tickets from the Odakyu website itself. My children are 3 and 6 and I bought a ticket for them. Did I not need one for them? :( I didn’t want them to get stuck without a seat or having them sit on our lap.

Hi, train tickets are required for 6-years-old and up. It's fine you bought a ticket for your 3-year-old, so they will have their own seat. When we don’t buy tickets for our younger two, we’re always prepared that they may end up sitting on our laps.

Thank you for the great videos, I actually have a question I have schedule a trip to Japan but the way my trip is schedule I have doubts in how to get to hakone, the itinerary is from Nagoya to fujiyosjida and then to hakone but the travel from Nagoya to fujiyosjida and from fujiyosjida to hakone seems to be always changing, could you advise me on how to get there? Hi, if you are taking the shinkansen from Nagoya then you can change at Odawara Station and take a local train ( Odakyu line ) to Matsuda. Then take another train from Matsuda to Gotemba Station. From Gotemba take the bus to Kanadoriikoen-mae, which is a short distance to FujiYoshida. Now, to get from FujiYoshida to Hakone, take the same bus back to Gotemba. Then from Gotemba take another bus to Hakone. You can get off at places such as Gora ( where you can take the cable car ) or go all the way to Hakone Yumoto. Just make sure you purchase your Hakone Free Pass in advance if you plan to use the cable car and ropeways. I hope this helps! Just don't leave too late in the day as they might not have buses in the evening time. Good luck! Sounds like a great adventure.

Hi. When purchasing the Hakone Free Pass on Klook, there are options across the top. Right under "Hakone Free Pass Options" it says "Today, Tomorrow, 07 Sep, All dates" so you can click on one of those to select the exact date you want the pass to start. 🌺 Heidi

Hi. To go directly from Hakone-Yumoto to the sightseeing boat, it's either taking the bus or train + bus. If you are referring to public transportation included in the Hakone Free Pass. (If you have your own car you could drive.) You could travel counter clockwise on the loop, but that would involve riding the train, cable car, and ropeway before arriving at Lake Ashi. 🌺 Heidi

If I am upgrading to the Romancecar online, do I need to purchase the "2 days-Hakone Area + Odakyu Line Round-trip ticket" or is the "2 days-Hakone Area Only" ticket sufficient since I'll be taking the romancecar? Also I'm very confused about "both a regular ticket and a limited express ticket are required to ride the Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar." Hi. If you pay online for the "Limited Express Surcharge" (1,200 Yen) for the Romancecar, you would still want the "2 days-Hakone Area + Odakyu Line Round-trip ticket". Any time you ride a limited express train, you need to pay both the base fare plus the limited express surcharge. In this case, the base fare is covered by the Hakone Free Pass that includes round trip ticket (this is considered a "discount pass"). Then separately you can pay the "limited express surcharge" for riding the Romancecar train. Yes, it's round trip Shinjuku - Hakone-Yumoto. So as long as your Hakone Free Pass is still valid, the return trip to Shinjuku is included. Romancecar tickets are available for purchase online from Odakyu. However, you only want to pay for the "Limited Express Surcharge" of 1,200 Yen, not the regular base fare of 1,270 Yen (since that is already covered by the Free Pass). Hi, when you reserve your seat for the way back, you do need to choose a specific time. But you don't need to reserve your seat right away. Hi Just checking, so if I buy the Hakone Free pass and Odakyu train I would still have to go up to the counter at Shinjuku on the day of travel (which happens to be a Saturday / busy day) to upgrade to a Romance car. As I want to ensure I get seats for us all which includes a 5 year old. I am thinking is it just best for me to buy the Romance Car seats in advance online and then the free pass separately. As the Odakyu line website doesn't seem to have that option. I know my son is free but again I am going to buy a ticket so he isn't sitting on our laps. Hi. No, the Romancecar is not included in the JR Pass. It is part of Odakyu Railway, which is not part of the JR Group. To go specifically from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, the best option is the Hakone Free Pass. If you want to get as close as you can to Hakone using the JR Pass, you can take the Tokaido Shinkansen line (from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station) to Odawara Station. That is as close as you can get to Hakone using JR trains. I recommend getting a Hakone Free Pass once at Odawara Station that includes just the Hakone area starting from Odwara Station. It will allow you to sightsee using local transportation such as buses, trains, sightseeing boat, rope way, and cable car. None of these local forms of transportation are JR, so they are not covered by the JR Pass. I hope that helps clarify.
