Thanks! Perhaps you can do a video about counting and playing accurately at fast speeds? Whether it's better to count like 1 e & a, 2 e & a, or use Solkatu, which every way professional players do it. I'd be interested in an advanced course myself, cause I've been watching pretty much everything I could find in English on frame drumming and also took another course... But I would be interested in learning how to create more interesting variations when playing a rhythm, how to improvise without messing up the main rhythm, as well as anything about Solkatu, especially the parts that help drummers who don't play indian music (the incredibly complicated kind) :)
@kenshorley3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, great suggestions! Solkattu is such a useful skill and practice for so many musicians. I feel very fortunate to have learned from a master of Carnatic drumming... I will definitely be filming more content related to skill development using solkattu.
@danmusiceasy3 жыл бұрын
@@kenshorley Great! I'm curious, can solkatu help when playing Middle-Eastern rhythms as well?

Yes I think so! Solkattu is amazing for rhythmic skill building in any style of music.

Hi Ken! I recently picked up my first (16") frame drum, and I'm having a difficult time getting my hands, and fingers to move separately from each other, hence they want to move in accord with each other. I'm sure it'll take time and practice to master this. Can you demonstrate some exercises to help with? Thank you!
@kenshorley2 жыл бұрын
Steady and slow practice over time will help this a lot. My advice is to make sure you're not holding tension in your hands or arms.

Can you recommend what brand or www I can buy the good frame drum.🙏🏾
@kenshorley2 жыл бұрын
If you're ready for a serious instrument, then I highly recommend Cooperman frame drums. If you are budget minded, look to Meinl or Remo for some good options. If it's your first frame drum, I recommend getting one with a 16" diameter which has a synthetic head.
@apricotdog Жыл бұрын
Is it normal for your upper arm to ache when starting the frame drum. Is it just a case of getting used to hanging your arm there or should the posture be corrected?
@kenshorley Жыл бұрын
Ache? No that's not normal. You'll need to find a way of keeping your upper arm relaxed especially if you're playing a large diameter drum. But if you're feeling pain, you may be holding tension in that arm.
@apricotdog Жыл бұрын
@@kenshorley I've actually tried the upright (?) style and I find I can play it easier and get a much richer sound out of the drum (it's 16"). I can also do fills easier but obviously no snaps. Great position for jamming though!
@spektaloza6 күн бұрын
Hi Ken and thank you, My TEK does not sound clear, it's a bit muffled, any advice? (I have a 14" Remo frame drum). The frame drum is my very stable, it keeps oscillating everytime i play DUM, any advice? Much appreciated. Thanks.
@kenshorleyКүн бұрын
Hi! I'd need to see and hear you play to be sure, but it's possible that you're holding your finger on the head of the drum a bit too long when playing Tek. Try to keep it light and bouncing. Those small Remo drums are quite light aren't they! A student of mine sometimes uses a type of rubbery material placed across their knee which can help with the unwanted movement of the drum when playing Doum. Hope this helps!

I do not understand how you keep the drum from moving around. Mine wobbles and slides. No one seems to address exactly how it's held in place. Can you please explain?
@kenshorley Жыл бұрын
Hi Tamie. Usually when this happens, the player can do one of two things (or both!). First, make sure that you're putting enough pressure on the top of the drum - not enough to cause tension in your supporting hand, but enough to stabilize the movement of the drum. Second, make sure you're not striking the tones too hard. If the drummer puts too much force into the strokes, it's easy for the drum to slip and slide and otherwise get knocked out of the proper holding position. Hope this helps!
