Toledo Bend Telemetry Tracking Study Update Todd Driscoll TP&W Biologist Jan 2022 Part 2

This is Part 2 of the January 2022 Update on the Toledo Bend Telemetry tracking study with Todd Driscoll fisheries biologist that is heading up the team that are tracking bass in Toledo that they have placed radio transmitters in since early in 2020. Fascinating stuff, fish swimming 5+ miles over two week periods, and some that never move.
Todd is updating us on the study they are currently doing using telemetry, or basically a radio transmitter implanted in large mouth bass from 3 to 8 pounds in Toledo Bend and Lake Fork in Texas. Specifically today he talks about what fish do after they are caught and released and ,what they have discovered about how far fish travel on a daily basis, all things they have discovered roughly 20 months into the study.
They are tracking both shallow and deep bass, every other week and observing what those fish do, how they react to boat noise, where they rest, where they feed, how they react to baits, survival rates, every thing we tournament bass fisherman want to know.

How does he know if the battery dies or the fish moves across to the Louisiana side and he is not picking it up? Just curious.

I think they deduced the batteries died as the fish they found on every trip all started disappearing at the same time

This got me thinking about the fish I catch in November, if I have an area that repeately stays loaded during that time period. When they move to another area of the lake to spawn and I loose them, until late summer rolls around. During an upset during the spawn like muddy creeks, cold weather. Can I come back to those november holes and propably not catch them as good, but still catch bites in a previously deserted area?

Can you tell if some of the big movers were caught and moved in livewells?

Only way to know for sure is if they are called in. The fish have an external tag and they seem to think that if anglers catch them they are calling in

Sounds like some fish may move in early to scout for spawning area and then return when conditions are right.

Ken and Todd thanks for sharing. Another reason this sport is so fun and mysterious. Ken can Todd comment on what the bait fish are doing during the study; or baitfish abundant(Todd mentioned sufficient to keep fish in a smaller area regardless of water clarity?) What does this say about chasing water Clarity as season’s change; is it overrated in searching for consistent fish. Seasonal Criteria: 1. Water temp, 2. Bait fish, 3.Surrounding structure, 4. Water Clarity What’s the dominate criteria based on this telemetry study? Thanks Ken
