Vocal Coach Reaction To Queensryche - Queen Of The Reich - Geoff Tate - Ken Tamplin
Insane.
Queensrÿche is an American heavy/progressive metal band. Formed in 1980 in Bellevue, Washington, out of the local band “The Mob”, they were originally a cover band that played songs from Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Deciding to move from cover work to original music they put together a demo tape, the first song of which was titled, “Queen of the Reich”. Intense, relentless drumming, brilliant guitar riffs and other worldly vocals, reminiscent of Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson, coupled with powerful composition and intelligent lyrics made for metal magic.
In 1988, the band received worldwide acclaim after the release of “Operation: Mindcrime”, a narrative concept album that proved a massive critical and commercial success and is often considered one of the greatest heavy metal concept albums of all time.
Chris Collins, the first vocalist of the progressive metal band Dream Theater, covered this song for his audition for the band. The song is also featured in the 2006 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Interesting! I've never heard that before about dropping your head voice too low and losing your voice over time. Maybe that's why so many of the 80's screamers have lost their screams? Check Eric Adams from Manowar. He always seemed to drive a lot of chest into his screams and his screams are still powerful even into his 60's. I think you're onto something!
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 5 жыл бұрын
There are still vocal coaches teaching early bridging. You need to learn to grow your chest voice and rely on that for what many are using head voice for. Early bridging is a fast track to losing your singing voice. Sometimes early bridging is fine for effect, but not as the go-to foundation for your voice. It will wear out and is not up to the challenge. It's a weak foundation.

@@kentamplin So then how do you explain singers who use Geoff's technique and don't have this issue some 30 years later? Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Michael Kiske (Helloween, singing with Avantasia a lot recently), even Geoff (who also happens to be singing with Avantasia right now) still can do it. I know it's easy to say "They aren't as good as they used to be" but they ARE still singing their songs and don't have to drop the tuning or anything like that.

That is something that many vocal coaches talk about with Geoff, which may be another difference between he and another phenomenal singer, John Arch from Fates Warning. Yep. Saw him in NJ a couple weeks ago. It was so much better than I thought it would be. His band has tightened and Tate keeps finding more of his old vocal capability. Not sure if he could pull off Queen of the Reich or Take Hold of the Flame (in the original register) these days, but it seems he finds a way to get through the tunes, sometimes going to a lower octave or modifying the vocal so he can perform it without leaving you missing too much (like before). Having said that, he can still belt out some powerful vocals at times! I know he went through some rough years, but it seems he's got a good portion of the mojo back. Oh, if we could only to see the original band united once again, before they're all really too old to do it...it is a dream, I have.

I watched a few pretty poor analysis lately of Geoff Tate - and im not really a singer. Ive learned a lot from watching you over the years Ken. I know with the rate you produce these videos it must be very draining for you, but I for one appreciate you passing on your knowledge. You are the only one to ever really explain head voice and chest voice so even I can see the mistakes some 'vocal coaches' are making in their analysis - its all backed up by listening to these guys in recent years and hearing how their voices have changed. One thing I always admire with some of the Queensryche live performances is that Chris DeGarmo could harmonise on some of the high stuff very well.

My friends and I were at a great party and the owner only played his Queensryche cds. This was mid 80's for us. Geoff's voice immediately caught my attention. The Killing Words, OMG! I always thought Geoff had a opera voice. Wish he took care of it. 😒 Rage & Crime Time are my favorite lp's. Thankyou Ken. Loving your channel. 💜

Fantastic analysis again Ken. I believe Queen of the Reich is actually from their self-titled EP, which I think came out 83. Mindcrime was a few years later. Thought I'd point that out, since someone else would have anyway. Keep rocking!

I remember my brother buying the Queensryche ep back when it came out and we just sat there in awe. I was only 10 or 11 at the time and I knew right then I wanted to sing for the rest of my life. I'm 45 now. Operation Mindcrime was a staple in my cassette player when I was a teenager. It was incredible as was Rage for Order.

This one was long overdue Ken. Geoff Tate was the master at this time. Nobody at this time was performing live vocals at this time like this and let's face it they have not since. Geoff Tate and Queensryche were miles ahead of everyone. Spot on reaction brother. I love how you just start screaming along like its nothing.LMAO. your the master brother.

Absolutely love this song. My dad used to sing like that in the 90s in his band Manta Ray, and was inspired by bands like Queensryche, TNT, and Crimson Glory. My favorite song my dad made back in the day is called Lords Of Atlantis. It’s really good, and you can find it here on KZbin. Anyways, such a great video and song. 🤟🏻👍🏻

Finally, Ken! I've been waiting for this for years haha. Keep it up! By the way, Michael Kiske of Helloween is known to have a very similar style to Geoff, but if i am not mistaken he learned quickly to use more of his chest voice and has a naturally higher voice than Tate. I think his voice has held up great over the years. Would be very interesting to see you analyze him too!

LOVE me some Queensryche. I remember listening to Christian Metal bands like Sacred Warrior that sounded so much like Queensryche at the time. Rey Parra was / is a vocal doppleganger for Geoff Tate. Even Jimmy P. Brown II from Deliverance has a somewhat similar vocal style. I played Sacred Warrior all the time on my old Christian Metal Radio show The Masters Majestic Metal way back in the early - mid 90's in Tallahassee. Great times.

Ken hearing you hit those notes so effortlessly just blew my mind. It's no wonder you are the leading vocal coach on the internet,(in the real world too). The proof really is in the singing! It would be cool. But like La Torre, Geoff would probably sound better and that's not a knock. Hitting the notes is only half the battle. There's the personalization (sp?) some singers have unique to them and Geoff probably emoted better than any metal singer outside of maybe Dio.

Small club in Baltimore MD .. Five bucks at the door .. 1984 .. Queensryche !!! .. .. Perfect place to sit . A few feet above on the side .. An overlook . .. Queensryche was my band that night !!! .. All the members fist pumping me and shaking sticks . smiling . and during the lead of Take Hold .. Geoff climbed up and stayed with me the whole time .. Shaking my hand furiously .. .. That was the best performance I have ever heard . I was witnessing history . .. They played every song that night from the EP . The Warning and one other song The Prophecy .. Geoff never missed a note and the band was .. Tight !!!!.. I only have it in my memory now .. ..

Why doesn't anyone react to the best Queensryche song "Warning"? It was truly something special to be a teen metalhead during the 80's, no processed, autotuned, beat detected, gridded quantization just pure talent.

I've always loved Tate, and I've always thought that this song showed off his incredible range absolutely the best. This was like a perfectly sung song (if that makes sense). And this version of QR was absolutely killer! I'm not going to comment on the Todd LaTorre version of QR, or if Tate has lost his voice, I'm just going to enjoy QR and Tate when they were at their best. And you are correct, Operation Mindcrime was amazing. And finally, Chris DeGarmo was a wonderful Lead Guitarist.

I agree with everything you said, except that Take Hold of the Flame showed more of his range, as he did much more in a baritone register at the beginning of that song. On Queen of the Reich, he started high and stayed there. That is impressive, as well, but that massive octave shift at the beginning of Take Hold of the Flame wowed me from the first second that I heard it. It still does, and a bunch of vocal coaches on KZbin agree. I have seen 11 different reactions to the song with 7 or 8 being vocal coaches. You should see the reactions. I think stunned amazement best describes it. No doubt, though, Tate and Queensryche are amazing on any song.
