Part 11: EVALUATING A LECTURE | How to Lecture in Higher Education

By evaluating your own lecturing as a university teacher, you can ensure that you provide your students with the best possible learning experience. There are a few ways to do that. One way is to ask your students for feedback through conversations or anonymous questionnaires. You can also observe how your students respond to the presentation, for example, if they struggle to understand concepts and how effectively you engage them. If your students are inactive, you may need to consider making your lectures more engaging. One way to do this is to use digital assets or active learning activities.
As teachers, we know the value of reflecting to identify areas where we can improve. Below are some general questions to encourage you to reflect on your teaching.
The atmosphere and active learning
• Is it a good atmosphere for learning in your classroom?
• Are you engaging your students in the learning process?
• Do they seem interested and engaged?
Instructional design
• How effectively are you using various teaching methods and approaches?
• Are you using various methods or relying too heavily on one particular approach?
Digital assets and lecture videos
• Can you use digital content in different formats to explain, discuss, improve students' motivation and attention, and save time?
• Is creating educational videos something for you as a teacher?
• What type of recording will be best for your students?
• Does your department support specific equipment or recording software?
• Which recording solution will take the least amount of time to learn?
Don't hesitate to make some adjustments to your teaching methods. You can start small and change a small part of your lecture.
