Olusegun, and you know, he probably still thinks of her, in a very loving way, as his wife. Unless she's remarried of course. That's Nigerian way. I got tired of correcting my in-laws that I'm no longer their wife. I even changed my name back to my maiden name.....but they still think I'm their wife, simply because I never remarried.

Watching this Vlog made me so emotional. As an adult I recognise the situation your parents were in at the time. As an African I understand the tremendous amount of pressure your Dad was going through from his family. I especially love and appreciate you for forgiving him and making that day possible because it was needed for complete healing from all sides. Your Mum? All I can say is she is a very strong woman. I respect her greatly for coming, God bless her! As for your brother who wouldn't come, he'll have a better understanding moving forward as a father. Forgiveness heals!!! Oh, Your children are very accommodating and well mannered. Your husband? He is the best!!!

I'm Nigerian and I have been following your story. I just want to say that watching this video made me tear up especially when your brother surprised you with your mum. I could see that your dad was sooooo happy to see her. I totally agree with you, your dad should have kept in touch with the children even though he was no longer with your mum but we thank God for bringing you all together again and I really hope your other brother can find it in his heart to forgive your father. I just think your dad was a victim of cultural beliefs. As a Nigerian, culture is one thing that is taken seriously especially with the northerners where your dad is from. Let's say he went after your mum and fought for her love back and lived in new York with you guys, he would be assumed to be a weak man by people due to this "cultural beliefs " that we have. I hope we(Africans) can learn to put behind some things that doesn't blend with the world we live in today. OMG I am already writing too much😀. I'm just sooooo happy for you and this made me so emotional I had to comment. Looking forward to your next vlog.

Why would he leave a country he loved, that he had all due privileges to relocate to a country that will make him automatically a second class citizen. Doesn't make sense at all. I don't even believe that his father, an educated Northerner will allow you marry at a young age. You were a privileged kid that attended FGC in Nigeria. You are far from the truth about early the marriage. That's usually for the very poor and uneducated. I believe your Father would've sent to you abroad for the best education, if need be. That's what such men usually do. All the same, I am happy that you put your differences and reunited as a family. This is a very emotional video too.

I and many conservative Muslim northern Nigerians understand exactly what the man feels. He really loves them but there's something that really hurts him and he may not voice out. That feeling was visible most apparently as he set eyes on Bashir - that made him shed tears. The reality he sees and he feels he can't change really hurts him. That reality, I believe is his biggest regret. That he could have been there to make his best effort to shape the reality before him.

Didn't mean to cry again, but hey, your Dad's emotions were too hard to ignore. Your brother did get you real good lol! From what you said, I think your dad was a victim of a culture at a time and place. However, that does not excuse neglecting his children. It's a good thing you have shed the load of unforgiveness for your self. Wishing you all the best of 2019 and the future. Ps: One of your dad's gift to your mum appears like a real gold jewelry set. Really nice.

Yes, Their dad was a victim of culture and their mum never adjusted... A lot of it I'm sure was centred around patriarchy... Knowing that in a typical Hausa home at that time the oldest male called the shots on everyone's affairs... It has changed a lot now... And there are a lot men that went abroad to study and came back with foreign wives and a lot of them stayed... Till date! It's so sad their mum had a tough experience that made her leave... She looks so beautiful after all these years... She's precious😍😍😍

This video was worth staying up until nearly 3:00 a.m. to watch it all, and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment. It was very heart touching. Every family has stories marked by trials, pitfalls, and jubilation. No matter the outcome or logistics, once created, a family is a family. I appreciate your more in depth explanation of how your family came to be. I’m honestly one of those viewers who thought your mom took the kids and left your dad. My being married cross culturally and more specifically to someone of your dad’s ethnic group, affords me an edge in understanding the “why”. Oftentimes the pressures of cultural conformity result in broken families. I’ve witnessed it many times. Hopefully your brothers will open up. I wish you all well going forward. Thanks for letting us share in this moment.

Similar situation with you. My mum is still actively asking me to check regular contact with my father. It was my sister (half sister) who traced my dad when I turned 40. But I am close to my dad (step father) and my own father is like a complete stranger to me. I live in UK but my parents live in US. This has helped me a lot. Next time I go to US, I will make an effort to stop off to see my father and maybe his kids (half brother and sister) they reached out to me on Facebook but I politely declined. Even my step mum wanted to see me (I understand she is separated from my father) Thanks you for sharing. Nagode. (Sorry your dolls creep me out) Love the group pictures with African clothes. Hope your kids learn about their hausa culture. I am Igbo but my mum refused to teach me so can't even speak. I plan to learn Igbo and learn more about my culture. By the way I see your red tomato sauce....very Nigerian. Your husband is cool. I hope your son answers question with sounds orally....I am glad your daughter watched the movie with your dad, one cannot become a movie director and not know Sidney Poitier. Sorry this is a long comment I got carried away. God bless you and your family.

You have such a good heart Habiba. I'm Nigerian too and I can tell you the your Dad was a victim of our culture, especially the Northern part which is very conservative. It would have been 'shameful' for him to follow your mom to the US. He would have been the joke of his town. Times have changed now but some people still hold on to those believes.

@Aro_Gidigba

@@christieatuh time has not changed those cultural norms in all of Nigeria. The North is just more conservative, I'm Yoruba myself and I can speak of a number of my uncles who have a similar story and had to rebuild a relationship with long lost now adult children and know of many from different parts of Nigeria. I feel for the father the years after his family left him without notice would have brought shame and scorn his way especially given he is the eldest son from a large family and from all I can deduce her father came from a conservative and affluent family cause only wealthy northerners went to barewa at the time just like Kings college. It's the sad story, even as a young man in my mid thirties with friends marrying women of diverse cultures and families with different norms I've witnessed conflicts that arise from the difference.

Quite emotional when I watched your brother hug your dad. The BOND between a Nigerian man and his first son cannot be expressed in words especially if they've been apart for like a generation...( 30 years is NOT a short time oh) and meeting his first love WOW!! From your story, Habiba, you dad really loved your mum..but circumstances and from my opinion and your story, some cultural, some his personal maybe character issues ( and I know because I live in Nigeria and was raised at the time you were kids in Southern Nigeria) he made some kind of sacrifices from her..but..well..this would make a good movie!! I hope Mariam could come up with a script based on this, like "series" about this one time in her life which we would watch in NETFLIX or even better in a global African platform like IROKO TV..
