You have probably heard of the iconic Stegosaurus, thanks to its giant spiked-tail, but you may not have heard of its equally amazing relative, the Kentrosaurus. This was a Stegosaur that hailed from Tanzania, that not only had a spiked-tail, but also back and even shoulder spikes. This level of defense made it one powerful tank of an animal, and it needed to be as it lived in an environment filled with various theropods both large and small!

Why didnt you show how the planet masses were moving 200-65 million years ago> They would have slowly changed habitats and oxygen levels dropping from 26% to 19%. Or even its territory might have gone down or up from water levels. North America was split into Laramidia and Appalachia countries. These doco's talk millions of years but fail to mention land creeping from Panagea to Jurassic periods affecting weather , plants , rocks , oceans and rivers and these dinosaurs dying out when a mass extinction event hasnt occured

I saw that Far Side cartoon before I knew that was the legitimate term. I read in a book where it was explained that there was no actual term for a stegosaur spike tail so a palaeontologist used it in a paper cause why not and it caught on.

Yeah, it's easy with our mammalian bias to assume that if there is a sexual dimorphic size difference, that the larger individual is male. However, it might have been that the larger individuals were, in fact, female. In many species of birds who exhibit a size difference, quite often, the larger individual is female. This is especially notable in birds of prey, like hawks. Closer to the Kentrosaurus in relations, it's been discovered that, for Tyrannosaurus, the bigger animals were in fact, female. I do believe that traces of medullary bone have been found, that might give us a reason for larger females than males: they needed the bigger bodies to deal with the energy and material cost of egg production. Of course, this doesn't mean that the Kentrosaurus males weren't bigger than the females, especially if they contended with male rivals for breeding access to a number of females. This particular strategy tends to favour larger males and may account for most examples of sexual dimorphism in the modern day fauna, as well as in the past. What we do need to do, however, is stop making assumptions without any evidence one way or the other.

Flood basalt volcanism likely also played a role in the demise of the stegosaurs, as their last lineage went extinct around the same time as the formations of several large igneous provinces, including the Paraná-Etendeka, Comei-Bunbury, High Arctic (HALIP), Rajmahal-Bengal-Sylhet, Kerguelen, and Ontong Java-Manihiki-Hikurangi LIPs.

these sorts of dinosaurs dont get nearly enough attention imo. the armoured ones, like ankylosaurs and stegosaurs. they must have been truly amazing. i personally think stegosaurs back plates were to prevent carnivorous dinosaurs attacking the otherwise unprotected back and flanks of the animal if the predator tried to get in close to avoid the swinging tail spikes. the thin edges of the plates, pointing probably sideways, would have caused horrible injuries as the stegosaur span around quickly like a top on its pivoting rear legs. anything foolish enough to try going in for a back bite would have been cut open as the powerful and rapidly moving warm blooded beast swung violently around. it would have been like being hit by a gigantic saw

How come some depict it with shoulder spikes and some with hip spikes? I mean it's really confusing, so what is it? Although, shoulder spikes would make more sense as the tail could reach near the hips already
@Ozraptor4

The spines were reconstructed on the hips for most of the 20th century until the discovery articulated fossils of Chinese stegosaurs in 1980s & 90s (especially Huayangosaurus) revealed that they were attached to the scapula.
